I have a 50's L shaped brick ranch home in Michigan and I want to try and have an " OLD WORLD "landscape done to update the front of the house. I am thinking of starting with a huge wooden Arbor in front of the large picture window which is the center of the house. I'd like the arbor to longer than the window and go all the way past the walk way...with Grape vines eventually covering it. But what else can I do? And, does this sound good to you all?
We have steps that are small and a SMALL porch with a single front door. It faces out towards the front of the house. (Actually a little nitch....) There is a flower box going across the one side of the steps....made of brick. A roof covers that whole area, extending from the house roof. ( hope that makes sense.
The yard is HUGE...we live in the country, so room is no problem.
HELP!!
Front yard needs updating.
do you have a photo of it?
and are you talking wild grape wine?
that may take a while to get established, and when it does... it's EVERYWHERE
very invasive. I have a lot out back...
What exposure is the front of your home? Lots of sun? Clematis would look nice too, with the flowers, you won't get that with the grape vine.... or what about rose vines. I guess it all depends on how much sun, if any you get.
but it does sound like a fun project!! i wish i had room for that. I love arbors.
Oh, thanks for answering!! I wil take a pix.even though it's winter, I'll do that.
In the summer, the sun is VERY HOT i that area. I have a flower box as of now and I have to water EVERY day or they are gonners.
Uhmmmmmm I am thinking grape vives. Not wild, but actual. I wasa told that there is a place near by that grows them special and yes they do grow FAST, but are supposed to be fantastic looking. But, I need to keep the theme mediteranian because of the house. Cottagey just won't do , in the front anyway.
Thanks, I''ll get the pix on line soon....

funny -- I just bought this polymer crystals in a co-op that would fit the bill for your flower pot.
here is their web site (if you are interested) http://www.watersorb.com./
and here is the Q&A for the Crystals. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/697540/
I can't wait to get mine. Gonna use them in my garden and for house plants.
They are lil crystals that are added to the soil, and when watered, they absorb the water and release it slowly - from what i understand.... then you shouldnt have to water daily.
Hmmm, Mediterranean -- now that's something I need to think about, but yes - the grape would do the trick.
So, is your front southers or western exposure?
