Walking onions (Egyptian onions)

Does anyone know where I can get these? Also, how to plant them? How long will it take them to produce an onion to eat?

But I did see a photo and comment on it in a recent gardening magazine (could have been Southern Living, Tennessee Gardener, or Organic Gardening) - with my own, I planted them several years ago, and just harvest what I need, whenever I need it. I think I gave them about a year to get well-established.

Hi Terry, Thanks for the info. I found a photo in my March issue of Better Homes and Gardens and have that "must have" feeling. Even if you can't eat them, I love the way they look.

I have had these for years, from my Mom ,from her Mom . They are called walking onions because the little bulblets grow on the top and when too heavy the stalk falls over and they grow where they land. I mostly eat the tops ( green onions) you can eat the bulb but it never gets large,and is not juicy ,rather hard . I do use them in cooking. Would be glad to send some,but they are still under snow Cinda

Terry, yep, thats it.

Cindy, I'll take you up on that when the snow is gone. When the time is right, just let me know and I will send you the postage. We still have about 12" of snow on the ground. Can't wait for Spring it's been a long Winter!!!!

Sandhill Preservation has them and I like their pricing best. I have some from another source, but www.sandhillpreservation.com is great. THEY ARE SLOW TO SHIP, so don't use them if you are in a rush lol!!!
