There are a number of varieties of the "Yardlong" bean and Burpee seems to have the old generic one thats been a round the USA for a hundred years or so. http://davesgarden.com/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=Yardlong+Bean%2C+Asparagus+Bean&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search They are climbers so you will need poles or trellis to hold them up. (6 ft would be sufficient. You may already know that they are more akin to southern peas than regular beans so the flavor is quite different. They also tolerate heat better than P. vulgaris. Plant them a week or so after your last frost date or about the same as blackeye peas, except 6-9 inch spacing. They have good size vines.

Yeah, a trellis 6 feet works well, and I space them around a foot apart. They need lots of feed and to grow fast, otherwise they can develop to an uneven thickness.
Known as Snake Beans here and in much of Asia...no pests here as far as I am aware.

They grew well for me , but I wasn't crazy about the flavor, or the shape. So skinny, hard to fork up and eat.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

I grow them. I grow mine on a maypole like trellis (it's about 7 feet tall). I live in Texas, so they grow well in our heat. I love the flavor - they are good stir-fried. The bugs don't seem to bother them too much. They don't taste like green beans though - they are different. They are conversation starters too - friends ask if I'll have extra to share every year.

They went nut here at my house. Climbed up into the crepe myrtles on the opposite of the fence and into the sunflowers next to them. I didn't get around to picking any to eat but I did get tons for sewing this year and hope to get pick at young stage for stirfries.

Question for others that have grown them. Can you freeze them?

Hello everyone,

I think I need some help here.

I had no big bug problem with my yard long bean last couple of years. This year it seems like I have a big problem with white fly and another kind of bug. They are a little bigger than the white fly and I think they move kind of like a grass hopper.

Here is a picture if them. Any idea how I should treat them? Thanks.

P.S. bigred, sorry I can't answer your question about freeze them.

I think they are 'plant hoppers' and probably Sevin spray would kill them, but check the label.

Thank you salyg. I'll check it out.
