My front garden...one step forward...

Weymouth, MA

I started laying pavers for the walkway today. It is too wet. I suspected, but it is supposed to rain again tomorrow. I hoped to finish. I didn't come close. Maybe the storms will miss us. I would like to buy a tiller. I like the small (cultivator) ones, but the iron hard Alabama clay...I don't think they will be effective. Any advice????

I have tried a Mantis tiller and now have a Roybi. Neither of these machines work very well. The best of the small trimmers is probably the Honda model FG110. You may want to check it out.

I'll put my Mantis up against Honda any day. It cut through the St. Augustine and went down 8" through the heavy Houston clay-based soil.

Granted, it took a while, and it goes quicker if I carve off most of the grass, but it does work even without - you just have to stop more often to remove the wire-like grass runners.

I keep the edge of the garden "plowed" where the Burmuda and SA try to creep back into the garden - maybe every 2-3 months.

Going on year 3 with it. Only problem I have ever had was one crossthreaded bolt and the need to run some carb cleaner through it after being idle over the winter.
