Asarina-why no bloom?

Pleasantville, NY(Zone 6a)

I got several kinds of Asarina (snapdragon vine) and planted them where they could climb or drape over rocks. They have half-shade. The runners are going all over, but no flowers. Do they not bloom the first year? I planted them in the early spring from home-grown seed. My understanding is that they come from the tropics and must be treated like an annual in Zone 6 NY.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Ruth

Hi Ruth,
I don't know when you started yours so it is hard to say. If it makes you feel any better, I just got a few blooms today. I have them planted in two spots. The ones in dyer soil and very direct sun all day have blooms, but others that have a bit moister soil and get bright direct light, but not actual sun have yet to bloom. I am also in zone 6 and they are annuals for us. Sorry I cannot offer more.

They are notorious for this. You may get late blooms or none at all. One of the plant breeders headaches was to breed an Asarina that is a reliable bloomer, sometimes you get just one or two flowers and then sometimes you get a plant full of colour.

Since you probably got them from a seed merchant my bet is that they will bloom late. As Michele said they need full sun and they like poorish soils.

Thanks so much Badseed and Baa. It sounds like I will have to wait patiently (Ha-ha) until they put out their one flower. Not exactly what the seed merchants claimed. Now I'll have to find an annual vine for next summer that really flowers in half shade.
Thanks again,Ruth
