Burned my iris bed by mistake

Several days ago I was trying to clean out a 3 tier flower bed which I had not worked on in 3 yrs. due to some eye surgery. It was overgrown with goldenrod and autumn asters and full of leaves. I got the brilliant idea that I would set the entire mess on fire and clean it up that way. Well, got out the matches, lit the dried stuff and watched it burn. When everything was burned off, saw plant parts sticking up and couldn't remember what they were. Upon closer inspection discovered it was an iris bed. Now I don't know if I will have any iris blooms this summer or not. They were up about 4" to 6"s and the tips were pretty well burned.

Has anyone ever done this before and if so did they bloom ever again?

Well, I think your iris will be OK. But the bad news is: the goldenrod and asters will be OK too. They just love being burned off, and will regenerate like crazy. To save your iris, dig out the rhizomes and pot them up. Then treat the sprouting weeds to a bath of Roundup. Re-plant the iris when the weeds are dead. It worked for me.

Iris's are very hardy, they will survive.As june stated, you may want to pot them and use the round up on the rest.They are hardy to.
