raised bed framed w/ rocks

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I admire a garden I live by. In the back yard the perimeter of the yard extends 4-5 feet wide, is raised about 1-2 feet above the rest of the yard. To accomplish that do you frame that space in w/ lumber and then put the rocks around securing them w/ concrete ?

Do you have a picture you can post? If you do, I'm sure someone could figure out how it was constructed. I doubt if there is lumber frame though, I think stone walls usually are built on their own. Only time you'd need a frame to attach the rock to is if it's stone veneer but I don't think people usually use that for garden walls, usually it's real rocks. Some stone walls are built just by stacking rocks up in such a way that they stay together on their own, and some use mortar to hold the stones together. Or if it's a cement block wall that's made to look like rocks, often they have interlocking lips at the back that hold them together without needing mortar.

I have 10 climbing roses growing against my 8 Ft wooden fence it faces east the roses are doing GREAT, but I have a 3-4 ft section the runs along that fence with grass, I want to get rid of the grass and plant a cottage garden. This 3-4 ft space is also framed by a rock swimming pool. Any suggestions.OR BETTER YET PICTURES of climbing roses and any other plants and/or flowers
