In contact with someone at Kyushu

MGJapan,

I am particularly interested in all four. Please view my journal here http://davesgarden.com/journal/j/sj/atenkley/2648/ . Any category that has a number other than 0, and has pictures of flowers, is a plant from which I probably have some seed. Let me know which ones you have particular interest in and I can verify availability.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Arlan

I just ordered some of these and several others. It's not a problem to make these rare MGs available to you in trade but we hope we can get what we ask for in return.

This is being called 'butterfly plug morning glory' but it may be know by some other name. There are many different morning glory now being sold online and the new seeds should be in the stores soon. There are still a few seed packs from last year that I have not seen yet.

That last image with the spiny seedpods appear to be Datura to me. Nice pictures, MGJ!

thanks Joseph,

That's what I like about this site, being able to get pointed in the right direction so one can make a positive ID of a plant and seeds. Do you know the name of the Datura that you think this may be and a picture too?

Hi MGJ,

Alas, I don't think I can say anything more about that plant picture, if the actual flower was present then it would be less difficult for someone to make an ID. Datura is on my "to grow" list so don't have any photos to share.

Joseph, you replied

"That last image with the spiny seedpods appear to be Datura to me. Nice pictures, MGJ!"

therefore I was wondering what Datura species name that you know of that have spiny seedpods?

Houston, TX

I have to teach a kids english and computer class now and after that I'm going to Kawana town check on a seed farm. I hope some concrete information will be forth coming regarding the last picture. Thanks TTYL.

Hi MGJ,

I agree with Joseph in that it looks like a Datura. My experience with Datura is very limited. I grew D. inoxia one year. It had white single flowers and the seed pods were spiny, but they hung downward as I recall. Those in your picture look like they are upright to me.

Datura metel's seed pods are upright and have knurls on them and not really spines. D. metel plants can have various colors, many of which are double and quite attractive.

There are a few folks who frequent this forum who have a much greater base of knowledge about these plants......X comes to mind!

The Datura in the photo also looks very similar to the Datura stamonium that grows wild around my area...

Maybe the people in either one of these forums can fine tune the ID better...

MGJ,
Your photo
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=3292642
is definitely a Datura Devil's Trumpet
Several species exist.

Many people get this plant confused with Ipomoea alba, because they refer to Datura as a 'Moon Flower', just as Ipomoea alba is called a 'Moon Flower'. Both are Evening Bloomers opening in late PM before dusk.

Edited to say:
Both Datura Devil's Trumpet and Ipomoea alba bloom through the night and close late the following morning.

Here is photo of one of my Daturas from last year.

Thanks Emma - There are many common names that are overlapping...that's why I usually refer to the Ipomoea alba as MoonVine(!) instead of just MoonFlower...

You are right, Ron...
MoonVine is a much better name to call this beauty.

Thank guys. We email the seller asking if the plant is Datura but no reply yet.

Houston, TX

The seller of these rare JMG seeds is a professor and he teaches about asagao. In my recent purchase, a letter was included informing who he is and an email contact information where asagao questions can be addressed. What an asset he will be while I continue to learn about this species. I haven't asked any questions yet but I plan to and currently I'm just buying the seeds he's offering. They're not cheap at all and many of the seeds have not been mention here or on ebay as of yet but will be forthcoming. I plan to offer some trades but I'm not looking for seeds.

Hope you will pass along anything you learn, we are all students of the morning glory!

Sure, not a problem. I just wish I could communicate with him in english. Anyway I'm learning how to say certain things regarding MG in Japanese. I want to be able to talk to the vendors at the MG festival later this year.

Houston, TX

I'll start germinating these rare seeds in a few days. Also I purchased some Ipomoea sibirica, kentrocaulos, Ipomoea longituba, Ipomoea jalapa and turbina corymbosa here in Japan. It's sunday afternoon and it's about 85 degrees. I'm going to fire up the grill and enjoy the moment..

Houston, TX

Have anyone tried germinating these Ipomoea jalapa from seeds?

MGJapan - The results of your venture into these other species of MG's should be interesting...

I'd like to offer a note as per current botanical names
Ipomoea sibirica = Merremia sibirica
Ipomoea kentrocaulos = Merremia kentrocaulos
Ipomoea jalapa= Ipomoea purga

So far all of the seeds purported to be Ipomoea purga have turned out to be Ipomoea turbinata, which is often also still referred to by the old synonym of Ipomoea muricata...maybe you'll have better luck than the rest of us have had with acquiring real Ipomoea purga...

Hey Ron,

Thanks for the link to ByndeweedBeth post. I printed a hard copy to read later tonight.

It's like going to school and getting hands on experience learning while growing these .
other species and the regular MG too. I should have a new digital camera with micro features in a few days so I can document my work and share pictures. arigato, TTYL

Clatskanie, OR(Zone 9b)

Arigato, don't forget to get about a thousand pictures at the Morning Glory festival this spring. We are interested in the house plant style of cuture that
goes on in Japan. I find this just fascinating. And keeping the plants short also is fascinating. If you get pix for us, then it is like we can all go with you and look over your shoulder. Frank

Houston, TX

Frank,

Arigato is thank you in Japanese. Sure no problem about taking pictures of the MG festivals to share. In Japan it's about the presentation of flower gardening and so on. It's fascinating how much time and effort that goes into this process. Here gardening is also seen as a form of art and expression. The MG festival are in the summer but Cherry Blossom viewing and festivals will start this coming weekend in most areas of Japan.
During this time of year is among the best time to be in Japan.

I have recently purchased seeds of Ipomoea purga from two different sources and will have to wait until the seeds are received to see if they are the 'Real Thing'.
