Oh, Liz -- sorry to hear about this mishap- p-u!
I found a link that may help or you can call one of those super-duper cleaning/recovery services that come to homes after fires, etc. . They do an excellent job getting rid of very strong odors. You may be able to get the cost paid through your homeowners ins.

Our rottie just took a direct hit from a skunk that apparently was living under our backyard shed. She did the same thing, ran right into the house through the dog door.

We bathed her twice with the peroxide, baking soda and shampoo. We sprinkled her with baking soda after she was towel dried. I finally bought some "Fabreeze" for pet odors and sprayed her with it. That helped a little but 1 week later she still stinks!

For the house, we Fabreezed the furnace filter and the heat air vents in the floors where the air comes out. This has helped also--but the smell is a mix of skunk and flowers now. I've been leaving the screen door open--when DH isn't around--even with snow on the ground. I think just airing out the house and the Fabreeze is eventually going to work. Jenna might be getting another bath this weekend with the old standby of tomato juice-we are desperate. She smells so back she thinks her name is stinky :~)

Stinky: Don't know for sure, but I've heard grapefruit juice works.

I live in the country where i see them daily (yuk).....we use tomato juice in big cans....always have them around for both the pups and us.

We know from sorry experience that what works best on dogs is..., I don't quite know if this is okay to say, but , douche. The whole neighborhood buys six packs as new construction is pushing the critters in to the area. The skunk smell is actually an oil, so anything the dog rubs up against now will smell. We had a skunk spray just outside the basement window and the smell was pulled in and spread when the furnace blower came on. We went to a janitorial supply and got cleaner that was supposed to remove even the smell of dead bodies and it didn't get the smell out. EVERYTHING had to be washed: drapes, curtains, the whole linen closet, all the bedding, all the clothes, carpets. Even now if you open a box that was here at the time, you get a wiff of Eau de Varmit. My husband and kids went to school and work before we realized the smell was imbedded and folks sniffed and backed away--some politely, some not. Kids are older now, but still at gatherings get giggles telling the story.

I'll try anything--I already have the large cans of tomato juice. I'll also get some grapefruit juice as a stand by. As for the douche--is it vinegar, Island splash, white flowers or does it matter? I want to be sure to buy the scent that is going to take care of SKUNK!

This poor dog stinks to high heaven.....I'm beginning to think she's outside rolling in the area where she and the skunk got to know each other.

I use Head & Shoulders shampoo on my dog to remove the skunk odor. I can't help you re rugs/furniture. Fortunately this hasn't happened to me.

As to the dog, Lemon Joy dish soap also works. I don't know whether it's better than the other suggestions. You might also try some of the ones with oxy-whatever. Those weren't on the market at the time that I learned about Joy.
