I have a couple of philos that I will need to support in pots. I think they are potential monsters. One is a Red Bristle and the other is a Hope.
Gonna need to stake these big boys, any suggestions?
Nice Philo's Dodgedame! The first photo looks like the Tree Philo I have growing in my yard and they do get huge.
I have a couple of Philo's in pots too and wish I could find some of those Moss or Coir Fiber covered totem poles. Back in the 70's and 80's they were sold everywhere, but I haven't seen them in years and that's exactly what some Philodendron's and other climbing plants need.
Here's a photo of my Tree Philo/Selloum
Is that second one the one named Red Bristle? I like the looks of that with the red stems!
Here's a link to Plant Files where you can read about the first one:

Here is what I did for a solution.
I used an old treated 2x2. I used U nails to attach chicken wire to the length of it.
Then I laid Spanish moss on it as I rolled it up.
When I got to the end, I used wire to tie the chicken wire back to itself.
I mostly just spritz the moss and the plant right now while it is inside and water the dirt every so often.
Badseed: Great Idea! Where did you get your Spanish Moss? And, did you sterilize it in some way, to kill any buggy critters? We have Spanish Moss hanging in the Oak Trees down here in the south, but it usually has spiders and bugs in it. I wonder if I could use it and maybe sterilize it in the oven? I thought about doing something like that using spagnum moss, but I think that would fall apart too easily. Your Idea is great!
That's a perfect moss pole ... just what some Philo's need!
Really good idea, I have been looking everywhere for somemthing like this too. I can't get the sspanish moss up here though and am wondering the same...would sphagnum work? If so, I have something for Hubby to do tomorrow...hehehe
My "Rest of the weekend plan"! I'm going to Home Depot tomorrow afternoon with my hubby - he will get the treated 2x2's and chicken wire, while I scan the garden center!
Thank you so much for this Great Idea!
You know, I've been thinking...since I have to use sphagnum, I might just use window screening instead of the chicken wire. Do you think it's too fine for the roots to grow through? although, I could cut it in spots...awesome idea, thanks again!!!
Badseed, what a wonderful idea, thank you.
lin, those totem poles are exactly what I was looking for. That second pic is the Red Bristle.
Your philo outside is absolutely gorgeous! Wish I could convince everyone I love here in Indiana to move south with me. lol
