My first lily seedlings!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Thank you, inanda! I think formosums are the best for a beginner- a great confidence boost. If I do separate them, I think I'll just take chunks of seedlings and plug them in. That way I can give them some more room without disturbing the roots too much. The lights in the plant room keep it warm, so I only give them a few drops of water at a time. They dry fast that way, but I have not lost any more since I've been doing it.

L henryii, all 15 looking good!

Yellow henryii, there is 10 out of 15 so far, but some are struggling, two taller older ones at the top have withered, one of the newly germinated ones look s like it's gone too. I took the plastic covering off a few days ago, it was getting hotter then but now is cold, but I did the same with the L henryii. Nights are often down to near freezing, I should get a few, they are probalby more sensitive to changes.

I watered them just before taking the pic, they kept moist easier with plastic over but that can't be left on.

L shastense, sown 15th November with the above two, there's one near the bottom just emerged!

L pardalinum, 5 now with leaves! Sown on 15th Nov also. The L martagon must have been the one I saw with a bulblet out of the seed, it's now buried so no pics of that one.

L. kelloggii, I have one! Sown on 10th January, you can see the seed head with a root about 1/2" to the right of the word Lilium.

Does the grass blade foliage die off after the leaf comes? Or does it die before the leaf comes? I'm trying to figure out what is suppose to happen, because it seems I am losing some of the grass like foliage before anything else comes up. Any insight help would be so appreciated. It sure is fun watching everyone's seedling here.

For you Neal, my pot full of Lathyrus vernus pink, I sowed them thick and they're all growing!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I think it depends when they germinate, magnolia. I have 3 tiny bulbs of another.L monadelphum, they grew in the autumn and the grassy leaf died back but the bulbs are still sat on the surface, no new leaves yet. Those that grow now should just continue to make leaves I would have thought but I may be wrong, that's what L philippinense did anyway.

Here's two of them on 28th October, one already died back, the other just making.

Janet, you're going to have lots of beautiful Lathyrus vernus! I'm excited to see how the winter sown ones are going to do. I think they will do better. And speaking of wintersowing, I now have perennial Iberis, hollyhocks, and Iceland and Peony poppies germinating!

You're lily babies are so exciting! Can't wait to hear about their progress :)

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Janet's going to have lots of beautiful everything! Thanks for all the udates.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Yea, all exciting stuff! It's going to be a headache where to put them all too!

I have a couple of good leaves, 2 different, on your yellow-green lily too Neal, I have to tiptoe to get a pic of that.

Your peony poppies will be P somniferum Neal? If you have them in pots they need to go in the ground before long as they grow quickly.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Oh, good! I keep meaning to ask you about those scales and bulblets.

Yes, P.somiferum is the peony poppy that is germinating. They only have cotyledons at this point and are pretty small. I've only ever direct sown them till this year, but the Wintersowing site shows transplanting them as little wads of seedlings to keep from disturbing the roots much. Aiming for getting them planted as true leaves appear, probably in April. The Iceland poppies are in peat pots, so no problems there.

Lefty, have your scales and bulblets from the little yellow, spotted lily started growing?

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Neal, a quick look and the verdict is . . . . . I can't find them! I mean I can't find the bag they are in! Egads, how embarrassing. They have got to be here somewhere.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

LOL, in a couple of years they will bloom and surprise you! I call those things "gifts and surprises to my future self".

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Oh Lefty, they must have joined the green pea squad!

Here's mine, see the reddish stem, does yours have that Neal? There looks to be strong veins in the leaves too.

Thumbnail by wallaby1
Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I believe I do recall it having a dark stem. They look so happy! A small bulb will bloom, so I'd bet you'll see some blooms next year.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I noticed some Bellingham hybrid bulbils growing too, about 2" tall, something had been scratching in the tub but they weren't damaged. Any of yours growing?

That would be great if they flowered next year!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Me! Me! Can I play the Belli game too?

Thumbnail by pardalinum
Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Aha! They look just like mine! Hmmm, now how did they get there???????

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

It .... couldn't have.. been... the.... PRODOFFPARD, could it???

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Oh dear! The spring time amnesia has really hit me this year. Not that I've ever been great about keeping garden records, but all I can remember about the Bellingham hybrids was when we discussed swapping- no recollection of potting or even seeing them. Were they bulblets or scales? I may have potted bulblets and sunk the pot in the ground and covered with mulch- keeping my fingers crossed. It's finally happened.....my cerebral cortex has blown, LOL. Now I need to keep my eyes open for mystery lily babies showing up somewhere!

I also found some unusual little bulb plants growing that I can't imagine what they are.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

It must be that darned PRODOFFPARD!

They were sent with the Astrantia rosensinfonie Neal, I wrote it in my book. You also got the Acacia, Commelina and Platycodon seeds in the same lot. Do you remember some small bulbils with long roots? They were the small bulbils from the stem. I think I remember you saying they arrived in good condition!

Think, now where would you put a pot of lily babies??

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

My Bells are sleeping in the garage. [At least I know where those are(!)]

And no comments from the peanut gallery, please.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I went back through our dmails, hoping I'd stated my "plan", but no, just that I got them! That was when my friend, Janice, died unexpectedly, so its a wonder I even remember anything else at that time. I do remember looking them up in Plantfiles, and now I'm thinking I may have planted them out in the garden. I wintersowed many of those seed, and have some healthy looking specie Dahlia seedlings going under lights. Bells still unaccounted for, but my bell tower is pretty batty, lol.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I found the Bells!! They are sprouting in a pot outside I had tucked against the house and mulched. You should have heard my exclamations of joy when I discovered them, LOL.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I heard them Neal! In my head anyway. You will be red with desire before long! Work that out!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

It seems to me since I switched my focus to outside work, my seedlings are doing better inside, being ignored ;0)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

OOOooooohhh la la....

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

Well I just planted outside some of my first seedlings. They were in a makeshift green house for a month. Here's to hoping frost doesn't come...

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

These are my seedlings from last year, still in pots. They spent the winter outside except for a few periods when the forecasts were for hard frosts. Most of these are from NALS but a few are my own crosses. Can you tell I make use of all horizontal space (away from slugs)?

Thumbnail by pardalinum
Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Pard, they are looking really good.
Intercessor, for all of our sakes, no more hard frosts~! You'll have to get some pictures for us.

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

I forgot about those monster slugs on the west coast, ick!
Pictures I can take.

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

AGHHHHHHH! I had fencing around my seedlings that I have been tending to for 7 months and the @%&(#$#@$!!!! rabbits still got in! #$@#$^*(#$@#!

Declaring war!
Andrew

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

You gotta try this Plantskyyd stuff. Rabbits and deer, bye, bye......over to your neighbors they go. Worth every penny, especially when you've worked so hard .
:*(

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

Hoping they sprout new leaves... Some of them were so healthy. I went out for a morning stroll of my gardens and there they were, shaved down to the ground :*--( Well I guess I will be forced to buy the expensive Plantskyyd...

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

You going to the IARU? Iowaron will have some there.
