Rooting Jar Exchange Questions and Discussion

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Hope I haven't confussed you too much Buttoneer.
The picture I posted of my bottle from Nancy just doesn't show what a nice shape it has. In the picture it looks round but it is really square with rounded corners. I'll be sending my bottles out soon. I have a few ideas.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Holly, ok, you send one to 101 & yours & the two others go out in tomorrow's mail. I used a priority mail box turned inside out, so I could mail it first class. The US Postal Service provides free boxes to mail things out with. I'm still using their boxes & their service, but not paying the high priority mail price.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Don't worry 101 I will find something really good for you.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

shocked to hear anything free from postal service

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

If you go to their website, you can order which boxes you want and they will deliver them to your house free gratis.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

-thump-
that was me falling over
I had no idea such service was available

Okay ... Holly? I still mail my jar to you, right? Just being sure. LOL

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Just remember people, yard sales will be starting as soon as the weather up north here gets warmer. A good source of rooting jars.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes, Send yours to me and I will send one to you. Works out pretty good.

Sounds great. Will try to mail out on Monday but will let you know so you can keep an eye out.

Would you wonderful folks, give me some packing tips on how you pack your jars?

Colie: I just double wrapped mine in bubble wrap and got a small box, ball up some newspaper to fill the box and place the wrapped jar in the middle. Seems to work.

Yep, that bubble wrap is a "must" when sending out packages. I buy it from WM and wouldn't be without it. I'm constantly mailing something. LOL

Just a note-When I turned a Priorty Mail box inside out, the post office refused it and I had to go home and repackage it and then go back to PO and mail it. They said people were taking advantage of the free boxes and they didn't like it. Hopoe they don't do the same at any of your post offices. Lou

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

so couldn't I just wrap the box in brown paper to disguise it?
Oh fine, I'll find my own box.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes, you can wrap the box in brown paper. I noticed that the USPS had stamped USPS on the inside, so I went over that with a black marker & covered it over, but I will use brown paper, from now on. Here are my conf #'s:
Rubyw: 03052710000137682342, HollyannS: 03052710000137682328, and missg: 03052710000137682335.
I went into a used furniture store (which is like a thrift shop here in Carlisle) and spent over $ 15.00 in rooting jars! Here is a pix. Holly, when are you going to run another one? LOL.

I thought the Post Office stopped accepting packages wrapped in Brown Paper Years ago!

Buttoneer: Great Finds! Love those little salt & pepper shakers! I went to our Hospice Thirft Store today and found a couple of glass containers too! I only spent $5.00, but also left a donation for Hospice.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Now you might have a problem with a jar with a tiny hole in the top. I would only put one cutting in it & remove it after it roots but before the roots get bigger than the opening. I guess I "sort of" went nutz in that store. I'm going to put beads on one of the larger ones & take it along to the Hobby Greenhouse meeting tomorrow morning to put on the raffle table. Now I would love to see pix of other people's "finds" posted here. The only bottle that gave me trouble was a little green Christmas tree shaped one (not on the pix) that had stinky perfume in it. It was from Avon. I poured the perfume down the drain & filled it with soapy water, trying to get that awful smell out of it. Ughhh.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

I don't know if the post office still accepts brown paper wrapped packages or not. Anybody else know?

lewiston, ID(Zone 6a)

All my packages @ Christmas time + what I have recently mailed have been wrapped in brown wrapping paper with strapping tape around all the sides...they just ask me if it's anything breakable, leakable, I think chemical (?) inside...the package I sent to Gale was wrapped in paper and she got it....my mailing & recieving packages recently has the postal lady & I in a great discussion about plants & rooting jars, etc.....Buttoneer, have you seen the thread in the Yard Art (or maybe it's called Garden Art?) forum about plant stands....looked like a couple of the vases you just got would be good material....Deb

Okay okay y'all are getting me all excited! I can't wait to go shopping now. :-) when I wrap my packages ... I just use strapping tape and cover every single seam ... no brown paper. Then I print out a label. Sometimes I use the Clip and Ship labels at

http://www.usps.com/

This sure makes it handy. I can print labels as well as postage and just drop my package off. It states you can ask to have it picked up and I know people that have done this, but I've never done it myself.

Received my Rooting Jar from Ruby/Rose_Petalzz today and I just love the blue glass! I put little pebbles in the bottom, filled it with water and ivy cuttings! Here's a photo ... not real good, my camera flash is having trouble. As soon as I get my "Rooting Jar Shelf" painted and on the wall, I will take a photo of all of my different jars! I have stuff in glass rooting jars all over the house. I need to get that shelf finished (painted/stained) and get it installed so I can get organized and have them all in one place!

Thanks Again, Ruby .... I love it!

Hi everyone, Lin, I received your "jar" today, awesome, thankyou so much and for the cuttings!!! I went to my thrift store again today and got some more goodies for the jars I have left to ship tomorrow. This is very addictive!!!! Love all of those jars up there Buttoneer, so lucky to find those, they are all so cool. Will post picture tomorrow of my new rooting jar from Lin, thanks Lin,

Fantastic bottles buttoneer!!! Yes, it can become addictive because it is so much fun. I love the cobalt blue one too Lin. Actually all on here are just adorable.

Gardengus or Cinda, I have yours wrapped and ready to take to post office after it opens this morning. The other day I mentioned buying glasses and things at thrift stores and such. I wanted to add another place where a person can find a great deal. Our town has Dollar Tree stores in which everything there is one dollar. I go absolutely nuts in those stores. Around Christmas time, I was writing them hundred dollar checks from time to time.

I have also purchased some good hard plastic pots to plant in too. They have served my purpose fine.

There are certain food staples that I use this store for too and feel that it cuts back on our grocery bill. Oh yeah, certain cleaning supplies too. Can you tell that I like shopping there? ha-ha

Okay, I hope that everyone will have a great weekend. This is fun!!! Thank you Holly.
