Rooting Jar Exchange Questions and Discussion

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

CC, Well I sure someone on the House Plant Forum will have an answer for me. I love those Ball jars, and I'm sure someone else will too.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Christmas Catctus, those are wonderful rooting jars, go girl, sign up and enjoy!!! This is a very nice thing to do, and it does help you get to know other plant addicts!!!!!hint, hint, hint, :):):):):

Both is going to Lin :)
Thanks for the push-this is fun.

When you all root things in water do you ever add anything to the water or do you just use plain water??Mine always gets sooo slimey. I am constantly changing the water.Thought this would be the perfect place to ask question without having to feel stupid : )
Thanks,
Nancy

(Zone 1)

Nancy: I just use plain tap water, but it does go through a purifier system .... we live in an unincorporated section of the county and have well water. I have to change the water about every 2 weeks or it gets slimey too.

Lin

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks Lin,I guess I knew deep down that would be the answer.LOL I am always looking for new ways to do things.Guess I will just stick with the tried and true.Changing the water at least gives me a good reason to check for roots : ) Thanks!
Nancy

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

I've got to change the water, too.
But, one thing that may help (at least you won't have to change the water as often, and algae doesn't build up) is to use a glass/jar that has a 'tint' to it....green is usually best because it's still somewhat 'transparent'.

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I never knew that Nan.Thank You! I am off now in search of a green jar or bottle.hee hee I used to have a very old pop bottle in the basement that was green come to think of it.I need to go see if I still have it. Thanks!
Nancy

Christmascactus: I look forward to those jars for rooting! I will root plants in any glass container! Here's a photo of my kitchen windowsill with a Prego Spaghetti Sauce Jar with a plant in it .... and the little lantern thingy was a lotion dispenser that the pump top broke, so I just filled it with water and hung it in the window with cuttings! I use mason jars, drinking glasses, old perfume bottles .... whatever I can find!

Here's a photo of some of my stuff rooting in water ... posted this photo awhile back, so forgive me if you already saw it:

Here's a shelf on my kitchen wall with vases and jars of water with plants rooting:

And ... another shelf where I sat some rooting jars, for the time being, cause I couldn't find any place else to put them! Eventually I will get my Spring Cleaning done and things will be more organized, and I will have all the rooting jars in one central location which makes it easier to check on them!

Lin, those are some nice looking maters in the windowsill. Which plant is that you have rooting in the jar between the maters? Which begonia do I see rooting on your kitchen counter? :)) Purrrrrrrrrrrrttttttttttttyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Looks like I need to take classes from you Lin.You know you could teach and call it "home decorating with rooting jars". You have a knack for making things look very stylish.Mine just look like a bunch of jars lined up with stuff stuck in them.

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Nancy, uh, that's what mine look like too. LOL!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Nancy, There is a whole discussion over on the Propagation Forum on Things That Root Easily In Water. There is also a II and III They talk about a lot of different techniques. You may find something useful there. I haven’t waded though it all yet a lot of information. Here is the first thread, they talk about adding a bubbler (not exactly decorative) but there are a lot of other suggestions. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/523734/

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks Holly.Looks like I know what I will be doing thisevening : )

GH you are a hoot! : )

(Zone 1)

Thanks Y'all .... :) I just take cuttings and stick them into any type of glass jar or container I can find, whether it's clear glass or colored ceramic, even plastic! I've been doing this for years. When I got married (1969) my Dear (now departed) Mother In Law taught me to root AV leaves in water .... take a little margarine cup, or plastic cup with a lid, fill with water, put lid back on, cut small slit in plastic lid and stick the stem into the water ... and within weeks, roots! I used to do AV's and other plants that way!

GH: The plant growing in the Prego Sauce Jar is called: Ctenanthe "Never Never Plant" or "Brazilian Snow". The Begonia is one I've had many years, A Cane Begonia, ID'd here on DG as: Dragonwing Begonia 'Benigo'. They are both in Plant Files

Nancy: Stylish? I had no idea! I don't have a creative bone in my body ... it just ends up like it ends up. LOL. I have a long, narrow shelf a friend gave me years ago that will be perfect for my rooting jars, but I need to either paint or stain it! Eventually I will get around to it and then can have all my jars in one location instead of scattered all over. I even have jars in the bathroom window!

Holly: I had no idea there was such a thing as a Propogation Forum .... I'm gonna go check it out!

Thanks!

Laura

Lin,I plan on mailing your jars out tomorrow.
Your "Never Never" plant is gorgeous.
I agree with Nancy,I love the way you decorate with your rooting jars-very pretty.
What kind of purifier system do you use?
I live in the country but am on city water & have been wanting to find a good filter system.

(Zone 1)

Gee, I have no idea what it is. Just something my hubby installed under the kitchen sink! We also have a water softening system, a large tank in the garage that is hooked into the main water line coming into the house. I use the purified water for plants indoors and for all my plants on my deck and outside, I use water coming directly from the well. I will check with him when he gets home this afternoon and ask him about the system. I'm sure he bought it from Home Depot or Lowes.

lewiston, ID(Zone 6a)

We are on a well here in ID....have the same type softener that we had in CA and I swear, it's one of the things that has helped my plants do as well as they do...our softener is potassium rather than salt...Melisa, I got the jar yesterday on our way out of town and it is beautiful...It has a green cast to it and will be perfect for about anything....very nice shape....I'll post a pic as soon as I get some begonia cuttings in it....Thank you so very much....I'll remember you each time I see it sitting on my kitchen window sill......Deb

lewiston, ID(Zone 6a)

and here it is with the begonia cuttings....My big guy needed a haircut...I'm grooming/pinching him to enter in our LumberJack Days in Sept....I want him to be real full....Thank you again...it is absolutely the perfect size....Deb

He's still a "big" guy-very pretty fellar.
What are Lumber Jack Days-sounds like fun.
Love your towel rack.

(Zone 1)

Very Nice Depsi!

lewiston, ID(Zone 6a)

Colie, LumberJack Days are Clearwater County's fair held in Sept...this is a logging/timber town and they have all kinds of sawing/axe/climbing/scaling/round cutting w/chainsaws/etc. competitions....it's wonderful & if you should see the young kids go up those poles!!!! really exciting and fun....our gardening club is entering a float this year for the parade...we are going to dress as "Gardeners" (is there a description/stereotype???) and we all are starting different plants to be displayed on the float along with us then afterwards they are auctioned off and the proceeds go to the school fund...this is a very economically depressed area so every little bit helps....this is a pic of two competitors climbing the poles to see who can ring the bell at the top and be on the ground first...forgive the dark spot...taken before new camera....Deb
