Lin, I got my wonderful bottle today. with plants still in very good shape. I don't have time to get a picture right now but it's great. Son Josh was outside shoveling the snow when the mail came so I got it in right away and in to water. He's going to hang my bottle for me a little later. How did you know I have a green theme going in my kitchen window. Wait till you see how perfect it will look hung. Thank you so much Holly
Rooting Jar Exchange Questions and Discussion
Oh Holly ... I'm so glad you like it. I had 4 of them in different colors and didn't even remember which color I sent to you. I have a blue one hanging from an S hook in my bathroom window, and a yellow one in another window! I meant to include a hook for you and also for Buttoneer when I sent her jar, but forgot! Mine is hanging from the curtain rod. My Sister thinks these are kinda tacky, but I like the colored glass with the light shining through!
When I posted my pic of the darling jar that Nancy/Cedarnest sent me I failed to say a word about the generous & fat yellow Christmas Cactus cuttings she sent me....They are residing in a gallon zip lock baggie & look upbeat & wonderful....rooting in coir & C&S mixture....Nancy, you made a few women around me very happy (including me!!!!) as I have promised cuttings from this one as soon as it's able to donate.....Thank you again....This entire thread has been such a blessing...I feel almost like I know each of you....Thank you so very much for getting this going,Holly....Deb
Deb,they look really happy in their new home : ) Good luck with them.If you ever need more just give a holler! LOL I agree Deb,I feel blessed to be a part of Daves Garden circle of friends : )Oh I am so excited to see what Holly comes up with for the next exchange.I have really enjoyed this.
Nancy
Lin, I like the blue too. Reminds me of the Caribbean Sea. No I wouldn't call them tacky. It's fun. the kind of thing that the young or young at heart would like. I love mine. What is the plant you sent me?
Deb I just brought a Christmas Catcus cutting home how are you rooting yours? Can I pull all the little segments apart?
Here is a picture of my jar I just put it up on the wall so you could all see it. I'll get another picture when it's hung in the window.
Give me a couple of weeks and we'll start a Garden Whimsy exchange I really like that idea. What do you think?
Lin, I think those bottles are fantastic....sun coming thru!!!!!!! Delightful and I think, very, very fun!!!!! I have one of those solar powered crystals in my kitchen window that throws rainbows all over the kitchen when it is sunny and I love it (partly 'cause it keeps my husband alert and fearful of me...He says he always thinks something's after him between the suncatchers flashing & the plant tendrils brushing up against him) Holly, sometimes I pull them all apart, sometimes I break into two or three pieces...it depends on what I start with and how fast I want a larger plant....I also wait a day or so after I break them apart before I put them in soil so they scab over the torn part....I'm using coir & C&S mix right now with a good spraying of a weak Superthrive in warm water after I have them potted up, then into a gallon freezer ziplock with top pretty much open depending on the look of the segments...if they are nice & fat, (like Nancy's were) I leave the top open, if they are kinda wilted I close the top but watch them very carefully for any sign of being too wet, I keep them all in a north facing window while they are rooting so they don't get any direct sun at all....so far I've had very good success with this...I also started adding green sand & blood meal to all my potting soil mix....I used it on one hoya start & one CC start & both look to be doing really well so will maybe try it as things need to be repotted...most of my things are very small since I only started collecting again last year after moving from CA (aka Plant Paradise) to ID (aka Plant Challenging).....retiring and moving here has been a big life change for me & I find myself lonely & missing CA & my human & plant buddys but all of you have sure helped perk me up & get me interested in all these wonderful plants again....thank you, Deb
Haven't had a chance to real through all the posts, but wanted to say a big thank you to Holly for the mini wine carafe (anyone who knows me personally would say that was VERY appropriate), and to Deb - Depsi - for the decorated jar that is adorable. I love the little farmer buttons you put on the ribbon. I wanted to post pictures, but will have to wait for DD to bring over her camera or come fix mine because it's acting really strange.
Sharon

I got the first one today!!! It's gorgeous. Thank you, Plant Lady Lin for the beautiful jar. We had 4 inches of snow today but the cuttings were fine. I let them warm up in the kitchen before I put them in the rooting jar. Mine is a pinky-purple. I've been sick with a virus since last Sunday and missed 3 days of work. This helped cheer me up. I left positive feedback for you.

Oh, I am so glad you and Holly both received your jars okay and that the cuttings survived. Wow! Snow! And we are back to the high 70's down here. I sure hope you are feeling better soon! There seems to be a lot of "stuff" going around right now. I talked to my friend today and her hubby is sick again ... she has had bronchitis twice this season already.
I just made a huge pot of home made Chicken Noodle Soup yesterday, wish I could send some to you to help you recuperate. Here's a little rose to help cheer you up! Feel Better Soon!

update on my mom
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/699593/
please pray for her
Lin & Holly, luv your jars! Where did you get them or did you make them????
Perennialgirl: I bought them at an outlet store here in town. Got all four they had on the shelf ... different colors! Aren't they lovely? I just love colored glass with the light shining through! They were cheap too .... if I remember correctly $1.49 each! I wish they had more and more colors, I would have bought more! I love Outlets and Thrift Stores!
Lin
Wow is that ever cheap! I luv them!! I'll have to keep my eyes open at our dollar stores here.
:) Donna
Holly: I forgot to answer your question earlier ... The cuttings I sent you are:
Some kind of ivy! (I don't have a clue to the name) LOL :)
Arrowhead Vine/Syngonium podophyllum:http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/54483/index.html
The same cuttings I sent to Buttoneer with her jar!
Lin
Something going on with PF tonight? Don't know why that link wasn't highlighted. Let me try again:
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/54483/index.html
Must have been me!
Plantladylin, Do you remember the name of the store you bought those gorgeous jars at? Would you believe, I paid $ 17.00 for a peach-colored one at a craft show a couple years ago. Arrgh. LOL. Thanks for the rose. I am going back to work today but abdomen is very sore, lots of gas, but I can't stay out all week. Let's hope the contagious stage is over.
Oh Shoot!!! Lost the message that I was typing to Buttoneer. Thank you so much for the lovely and unusual jar and ivy root cutting. The turquoise colored beads match the color of my kitchen. I have a garden window in my kitchen and the jar has taken a place of honor there. By the way.....am I waiting for the ivy to begin rooting? or what am I supposed to do with it? It is lovely and will make a great addition to my garden.
Oh yeah, another thing. My husband has visited Carisle a few times for the car shows. I find it amusing that is where my jar came from.
Again, thank you for participating in this really fun exchange and also a great big thanks for Holly starting it. You Pennsylvania folk are a-okay. Be good and take care.
Ruby
Buttoneer: I think I got those jars at a Beall's Outlet, but don't remember for certain, I was in and out of Hospice Thrift Stores, and a couple of others when I was shopping that day. And, I got stuff at all 4 or 5 Thrift Stores I was in! I do like the jars, kinda unique with the colored glass and the beads already on them. I'm not crafty and have a very short attention span, so I know I doubt I'd be very sucessful at adding beads to jars myself .... I would probably get one or two beads strung and then it would end up in a closet somewhere for lack of interest!
Dravencat! You went nuts, didn't you? I'll put all *4* jars to good use, believe me! It's only 16 degrees out and the mailman left the box on the porch (didn't ring the bell) so the phil cutting looked a little ...uh...cold! He's perking up though. Thanks so much! My DD (10) wants the teal vase to start some cuttings!
On a sidenote, my son (8) had asked me why I was taking pieces of my plants off and sticking them in water (this was a few months ago). I told him it was a way of making new plants without having to pay for them. Fast forward a few days til we were grocery shopping in Meijer. I was putting the groceries up on the conveyer belt and the houseplant section is about 25 feet away. DS zipped over there and was looking at some plants. I didn't think anything of it til he came back and handed me a piece of Ivy and said, "Here, Mom, now you can make a baby plant out of this one for free!" Was my face red!
MsKatt: That is so cute! I bet your face was red, but your Dear Son was being so sweet. The innocense of youth! I have read posts on DG where some people admit to pinching off pieces of plants at garden centers to take home! And, they are adults!
Colie: The mailman just came to the door with a package! My rooting jars from you! Thank You, Thank You! I love that Ginger Ale Bottle ... I'm going in search of some cuttings to put in it right now. I like the little glass jar too, you didn't have to send me two jars! But, believe me, I will use them both! I will take a photo to post later on!
Thanks again,
Lin
To everyone I sent jars to, yes, you are supposed to put the ivy in the jar til it gets new roots, then plant it up! I got this variegated ivy from where I work (the Corporate office of Giant Foods, Giant of Landover, Stop & Shop & Tops). The floral dept got a whole slew of plants in planters, which the vendors bring in to show the buyers and what is left over was sold at a sale in our building. I had this variegated ivy going in a pot for several years & finally planted it outside on the Northern sheltered side of our carport & it is slowly crawling up the lattices. It seems to be very happy in Pa, zone 6b. It will be awesome when it covers the N. side of the carport. It also has trumpet vines hanging over it like a porch. I'll try to take pix when the snow melts & you can see the ivy. I had NO idea varigated ivy was hardy but this one seems to be.
Lin, I swear to heaven....it is almost a compulsion when I'm in like HD....I just want to snap stuff off and stuff it in my purse...I've been able to control myself but I am not kidding.......It takes effort on my part, real effort! Mom always said my grama never went anywhere without coming back with alittle piece of this and a little piece of that from the plant kingdom....must be my blood....I have a senicio (think that's the spelling. Common name: Banana vine) which is about 5 inches high now & it's a start from a segment that had fallen down onto the bench in HD from an overhead display....& I felt guilty picking it up and palming it on my way out of the store....I could see the headlines now: "Former Church Secretary Pinched in Plant Pilfering"....Deb
Depsi: That is soooo funny! I am such a big Chicken, I one time at HD found a piece of a plant with seedpod lying next to this really nice tree on the floor, but I had to ask the clerk if I could take it and try to root the seeds! She said, Sure! Seeds never germinated though!
Something is going on with my computer ... it's got "bugs" for some reason! I am trying to post this here and it vanishes and part of it posted on another thread! Weird. Anyhow, let me try this again! I took a picture of some of the jars I received and wanted to post it for y'all to see. I got a real cute little dark blue votive candle jar from Rose_Petalzz/Ruby and I liked the color so much that I decided to do a blue theme with them. I knew I had some blue/white frosted type glass bits from a craft project years ago, so I searched and found it, and used it in my clear jars. I really like the look and can't wait til morning when the sunlight is coming through the window! Here's the pic ... from left to right:
Ginger Ale Bottle from Christmascactus/Colie, Blue Votive Candle Holder from Rose_Petalzz/Ruby, Glass Jelly Jar from C'Cactus/Colie, Glass Candle Jar from HollyannS/Holly, and the last on the right is one I had on a shelf.
Forgot to tell you fellow "plant-snitchers" that when I went to the York, PA flower show last Saturday, I was in one of the vendor's booths & they had sanseveria (spelling) (Earth stars) potted up & ready to sell and I saw one of the offsets had fallen off & was lying on the table right next to the huge "Mother" plant. I picked out one of those rose-colored double kalanchoes and picked up the pup. When the server went to ring it up, I showed her the offset & told her (quite honestly) it had fallen off the mother plant & was lying on the table. I handed it to her & told her I would like to buy the offset and she thanked me, dropped it in the bag & never charged me for it. There is more than one way to "skin a cat" (never liked that saying but it fits the occasion) LOL. You are talking to an old plant-snitcher from way back but I would rather pick up something that fell off the plant than rip it off. I feel more guilty ripping than picking. (are you laughing yet?)
I received my bottles today, They are just so wonderful. I have to go now and can't take pictures yet. But I wanted to let Ruby Rose-Petals and Susan 101. That I got my jars and how very much I liked them. I promise I'll post pictures in a couple of days. Thank you, Thank you both.
Lin, Those jars look great and I really like that Ginger Ale bottle. What a great idea the colored water was.
Holly, it's not colored water .... it's blue & white colored glass chips inside the jars!
OHOH....I think I have the obsessive/compulsive part of me going on.....I just went thru the Avon catalogue and the whole time my mind was saying "HHHMMMMMMMMMM, what a great shape jar...." "HHHHMMMMMMMM, what a great rooter"...OHOH.....since we started this I have bought horseradish & rice vinegar & wine vinegar just for the jars....OHOH....Deb
LOL Deb! I think you have "Joined The Club"!!!
Oh My Goodness. Sounds like we all suffer from the same afflictions. This is scarey! LOL It is just so funny reading of all of your antics( I'm guilty too),MsKatt,Buttoneer and Deb.You are going to have me chuckling awhile : )
Lin,I love the look of your jars. Those glass chips really look neat : )
Nancy
Lin I to luv the idea with the blue and white chips. Maybe I'll have time to look at used stores for rooting jars.
Some of the rooting jars I got were larger than I wanted but the "furor" was on me and I couldn't stop.............couldn't stop..................couldn't stop......................wait a minute!!!!!!!!!!!! Guess I will have to join a plantaholics anonymous group somewhere. Hey! There's one right here!!!!!!!!! LOL.
MsKatt I said I went a little overboard. I have this problem that when I cant find the perfect "one" I overcompensate, LOL.
Rosepetalzz I recieved my jar yesterday and love the little pig on it. I havnt seen those little glasses in years around here so it brought back some much needed good memories.
Sorry it took me so long to say thank you but Ive been getting over some bug that took me down for 3 days and then it hit my DS. Hope no one else gets that thing, ugh.
This was a lot of fun, I am so glad I finally joined in on it.
Janet
No jar is too small or too large for me to root cuttings in! I have a large vase out in my Florida Room that I keep water in and when I'm cutting, I stick things in there. I had a pretty good sized glass vase on top of the frig with stuff rooting in it for awhile, but finally planted it up. Hey! I need to go find that vase and get water in it for more stuff! LOL
For quite awhile I had an old 5 gal bucket behind the shed with water in it, so when I was in the yard cutting things back, I could put some in the bucket to root! The bucket is empty right now, but not for long, I'm sure!
This was so much fun .... and I still hope we can do what I suggested awhile back about having a Garden "Gadget"/Garden "Whimsy" type of exchange before long.
Lin
As soon as I get an evening at home I will post pictures of my wonderful new jars and I will get the Garden Whimsy started. Anyone have ideas or suggestions about the Garden Whimsy exchange start posting them here.
Received my lovely jar along with tradescantia and begonia cuttings from Sharon today.
Haven't had time to play with the camera lately, but will try to post a photo early next week.
Thanks, Sharon! Much appreciated! I'm excited about the getting the cuttings to root.
The tradescantia had a few small roots when I unwrapped them!
Could you start a new thread for the new exchange?
I'm still on dialup and this thread is taking foooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrevvvvvvvvvverrrrrrrrrrrrrr to load.
Holly: I am so glad you are willing to organize the Garden Gadget/Garden Whimsy Swap! I love that idea. When I first mentioned this exchange I was thinking along the lines of anything garden related .... wind chimes, garden gloves, inexpensive little statue type things (frogs, toads, turtles, rabbits ...., little wooden garden signs, garden flags .... cute pots to put a plant in!
I can't wait for this one to begin!
Lin
Maybe I can get involved in this one since it would be easier to ship to me.
:) Donna
