I really MIss my garden!!!!!!!!!
we just put in a new bed, recovered from the driveway. It's muddy, it's rained for the past few days, but with our clay, it dries out quick enough to plant. Hubby is on vacation and yesterday while it rained, we went to the nursery. Came home with a variegated gardenia, a miniature variegated gardenia, a bear's breeches (really excited about this one), some type of juniper and a low spreading yew for the back of that bed. Really getting excited, he brought home two huge rocks for it last week. I bought an arborvitae (???) fern last week for one corner of it. It's mostly still potted plants for now, my brugs and all, and all my seedlings are in the back. Don't know where I can put them to get them out of there, but I'll have to find a place.
Taking care of all my brug babies, repotting cause they root and grow so fast, and feeding them. Mosquitos are really bad, but I spray myself everytime I go outside. They just love me! My triple purple datura bloomed finally and I'm thrilled about all the buds on it.
That's probably it for now, except I didn't mention the humidity. It's unbearable!!!!
aaaahhhhh thanks Tig i really felt like I was there!
I bet u jumped u and down when your purple opened!!!!!
wow u guys have been busy.!!!!
luv nana
tiG, I'm jealous of your Bear's Breeches (Acanthus mollis). It's a plant on my long-term "want" list :) How exciting for you!!!! And that's pretty cool about your purple datura, too! Good for you!
Nana, I went out yesterday to discover my corn had been decimated by raccoons and a wind/rain storm on Sunday. No more corn :( But life goes on - we pulled it up, planted some white pumpkins for DD (fingers crossed that they'll be ready by Halloween) where the corn had been.
I also picked enough tomatoes and peppers to make a batch of salsa for Christmas presents. I've also got enough Lemon Cucumbers for a nice-sized batch of sweet pickles, so I guess I know what I need to be doing!
Now, if I can just get myself moving early enough tomorrow morning, I'll start in on the weeds that are threatening to take over the flower beds, but I gotta do it early to beat the heat! Whew!!!!
Oh Herblady! this is NOT GOOD!!! you can;t be missing your garden!
I can send ya some more dried roese and petals, again! Just say the word and they are on their way! I have loads of them still!
Also,.... my garden??? well, my first rose tree that my DH bought me two weekends ago bloomed already! It's a Diana, Princess of Wales.. and she was gorgeous!! I'll post pics when I get them developed. My others are doing well- although battling that bad boy black spot!! (Evil creature- trying to ruin pretty things!)
My other new rose plants I planted three weeks ago- got them half price end of the season stuff- are looking good and I've almost gotten all the black spot from them! I hope some of them will sneak in a bloom or two before the season is over. I noticed that many of my roses last weekend were looking a bit peaked- yellowing leaves, etc... so I narrowed it down to needing a good drink of fertilizers and IRON!! ( I hope this was all it was!) The roses that seem affected were all the roses that were in a little garden area that theold owners did... so I thought that maybe the soil had gotten depleted- after all they've been blooming, and blooming, and growing! So... they looked much better yesterday- I think- so.. we'll wait and see....
I have a great idea!!!!
I think in honor of Herblady and her dilemma... WE ALL NEED TO GO OUT TO A NURSERY, ETC., AND BUY A NICE LIITTLE PLANY WE LIKE AND PLANT IT IN OUR GARDENS IN HONOR OF HERBLADY!!!
(If nothing else, it gives us an excuse to get a plant we wanted!) And then we can tell Herblady all about what we got and eventually post pictures and send her cuttings and rootings when she can go out!!!
what do you think????
I'm going today!!!
and preferences of what I should get, Nana????
(THIS ONE"S FOR YOU!)
Love,
JSS
Nana, It's been so humid here in Ohio, you're lucky you can't go out. I have been repotting my mints and herbs for the farmer's market. They seem to sell quite well. Also, people want white datura in one town, so I'm getting those repotted. Take care of yourself and stay cool.

Nana - I haven't been doing much. After the two front beds were finished, or almost finished, we dug up a new narrow bed to take a hedge instead of erecting a fence. This is to the right of the new trellis stucture around the a/c units and extends to the woods. It breaks up the garden nicely and will also protect the rest of the garden at the back from the south/west winds. I planted Tim's passifloras to climb the trellis but still need to attach some fine mesh type of material for the trendrils to get a hold of. Then came the much awaited three days' of rain and temps down in the 60s. Wasn't that fantastic for end of July!! Then today I haven't been feeling too good and I'm not supposed to go out in the sun either because of my medication, which is driving me crazy!! Not the medication....lol!! Having to stay inside a lot of the time. But I usually get up early so can get things done before the sun reaches me. DH is now putting up trellis this morning at the bottom of the cat porch which is set up high off the ground, so then this will be my next planting area. I planted the variegated buddleia in one of the front beds and 2 others - Black Knight! The japanese beetles seem to be leaving me alone for the moment but the whitefly on the roses are multiplying rapidly. I am taking it easy today - need to do housework - but am still fiddling around putting up pictures etc on my bare walls. I hope you have a good day Nana and that I haven't run on too long. God bless :-)
well lol I sure do like something that smell good.????
hummmmmmmmmmmmmmm
HHHHEEEEYYYY NANA!! My DH just got through digging out some horrible Box
hedges that had been blocking my beautiful Bay Window. I know you know what I'M doing there. Yep, I have been working deligently in getting my Daylily
bed going, and spent yesterday and this morning planting daylilies. It's going to be magnificent. I already have over 30 in there, with more to be moved, and still more on the way. I am going to plant the asiatic in a pot for the front porch.
Grab a good gardening book, search the seed catalogs, putter with your houseplants, watch HGTV....I know!! I got it by George! Water by moonlight. As for those mosquitoes, wear long sleeves, long pants, gloves, and get DH to get you a garden hat and make a long veil of net to cover your face and neck, make it next to impossible for the little monsters! Love you, you know....and as I go to plant, I'm gonna say " One for Nana....One for me, and so on.
Big Hugs

Hey Nana, Well its been hot and humid here too. It rained all weekend so ground is pretty soft now so I have been weeding, weeding and more weeding. (I am sure you don't miss that) lol...... And you know what I discovered I actually have veggies in my garden once I got some of the weeds out. lol Why is it weeds grow fastier than anything eles......? go Vols I want the salsa recipe too... As for something to plant in honor of Nana I have just the thing was going to try to get them planted to night but now they will be in honor of nana.. and yes nana you get some when they get big enough......and they do smell good. lol bet you can't quess what it is? lol
oh no... mystic... is this the beginning of another GUESSING contest????? gulp, kasp, gulp???
-JSS
Mana, I have extra Ortho bug repel; it is like incense you light, hang on a stick -in it's cardboard holder and the light smoke keeps the biting flies as well as the mosquitoes ( Wisconsin's state bird) away for hours and no oil on the skin. If you are interested in that and/or fresh clippings of sweet Annie, just e-mail me. It's the heat that is keeping me indoors (does not go well with my meds). I got out early this AM and saw a black swallowtail on the tiger lily, a really beautiful site--of course he moved on before I got my camera, but memory photo remains. Marcia
Well Nana, My rocks are sprouting up nicely! I dug up a ton of the critters again this a.m. We are thinking about a rock fence along the Driveway...
My canna are finally starting to take off and the first one is blooming. I moved them in mid spring and wasn't sure any would bloom this year. I also have a couple of the Gladiolus blooming.
I find myself out looking everyday for anything with seed so I can try a few trades later but so far the pickins are pretty slim! But just look out next year!
Well, that is about it for me....gotta go check the other posts and see what mischief I can find....
Hi Nana, I went out this morning and uncovered some of the rocks in the pathway by the big rock garden, the ajuga and Gill over the ground and barnyard grass had decided to take over! I found the Dianthus amurensis that I planted 4 years ago and had thought died with two beautiful purply blooms hiding under a volunteer daisy, so dug that out and now those "blue" blossoms are glowing in the midday sun - which operetta was that song, "Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the Noonday Sun" from??
I went to sort through my seeds to see what I could offer Baa for a trade and found some Echinacea Tennesseensis, Sweet Annie and pale blue Delphinium seeds so I took them all out and planted them. Then I found some Crazy Daisy seeds and pansy seeds that had been overlooked and planted them, too. I think I want to dig around and see if I can find the Dianthus knappi seeds so I can have a lovely little yellow pink out there. I figure that this stuff will get an early start on next year, although it is dry as dust here - very unusual for western New York state. I'll go out at chore time and water everything.
Hmmm, think I'll go order the red twigged willow so I can make some pretty red twig wreaths for Nana next year...
Kathleen
ps. I got yelled at by my daughter when she found out I was still out at noon - too hot and too much sun. When did she get to be the boss?????
Nana,
There's a gift for you in the photo forum....Go see!

Hey Nana!
Well, I just got back from the nursery.... they're having a great sale!! So- i got something to "Honor" you while you're stuck inside!!! So, i'm gonna plant it and hope it grows and then take pics of it!!!!
(The problem is - I also got some other plants, too! Since it appears that no one else is gonna buy and plant in your honor- I got a few extras!)
-I got TWO geraniums- one with bright pink flowers and a dark pink inside, and another with DEEP maroon/purple flowers!
-I also got a Yubi Red Portulaca! Grogeous!
-And FIVE pepper plants with the veggies already ready to harvest for $1.29! I'm not into veggie gardening- but I thought getting the whole plant and the peppers already to eat for $1.29 was cheaper than buying the peppers at a grocery store!
-And finally..and I had, too, althought my DH might "kill" me- but.... at half price- a pretty Golden Showers rose Climber! Loaded with blooms already! It's a beautiful golden yellow flower. (I thought this one would be in honor of Louisa!) A little black spot but that's no problem!!!So.....
Here's to you, my friend!

Nana,
It has been hot and humid here in GA. I have been weeding, weeding, weeding, finished the canna lily and petunia bed, put down some wet newspaper strips and covered them with compost... then I weeded my small herb bed with cat thyme and basil,, going to plant st johns wort, calendula, sage, oregano and whatever else catches my eye... I ripped the dead sunflowers and sickly looking morning glories out by the mailbox, worked the soil, added some amendments, then planted some marigold, petunia's, and more morning glories..I cleared out a spot in my front garden by the steps for some pansy's, would love to put the seeds in the ground, but I have no luck growing them from seed, but then again, I may try again.... lol I have to finish cleaning out the front bed by the porch, maybe will plant with some more marigold, and a few other things that are annuals, not sure.. I am designing and planning my flower beds for next year.. trying to figure out where to put my canna lilies that didn't bloom this year, and wondering when would be a good time to move them...I am enjoying my roses... I planted a nearly black, blue moon, a miniature peppermint tea, sutters gold, and a tropicana.. all but the tropicana have survived, and the company I bought it from is replacing it..I'm trying to figure out why my bearded iris aren't blooming, maybe they are too wet...not sure..and when I go out this weekend, I will buy something in your honor and plant somewhere in one of my flower beds... any suggestions??
take care of yourself,
Nina
Hi Nana! Certainly hope all of these busy gardeners are helping keep you occupied with good gardening thoughts. Today was not a gardening day for me (other than giving all of the babies water water water). My sweet wonderful daughter is getting married September 1 and I have been running errands and making calls related to the event. It is somewhat difficult to take care of details for a wedding in Colorado when I live in Memphis TN! We are having the cake made there but will be doing the final decoration of the cake with fresh flowers and I have been contacting people in the area about obtaining locally grown blooms. I will plant in your honor this week. Do take good care!
Aahh you guys have worked so hard,I sometimes wonder when
people pass by a yard and think how beautiful it is .If
they really know all the hard work and years of caring
that goes into what yard!!!!!I am so tired, all that work
has done me good.and thank you for the plants you are
growing.thank you for allowing live right now thru you.
luv nana
that's right...laugh at my peppers...
i'm a pepper, you're a pepper, wouldn't ya like to be a pepper too!!!!
Hey- in my grocery store here- the peppers are EXPENSIVE!!
$4.99 a pound?????? $2.99 for the hot ones????
So... I got FIVE assorted pepper plants for $1.29 total- and the plants already had ripe peppers on them- golden hot ones, green peppers, purple peppers...... so...... I didn;t get a good deal??? I already picked em last night as I was planting them and they still have peppers on them that need to get ripe......so.......
hey- I needed them to make a salsa that I make from scratch- and beleive me- my SALSA is the best- I grew up in N.M. and learned from THE experts!!!!!! See if I share MY recipe with anyone!!! he,he,
you all are just jealous cause I did something different..or did I????
Hey- what do i know? I'm just a newbie gardener who thumb is only brown from the dirt I can't get off of it- hasn't even begun to turn green yet.....
never owned or grew a veggie garden in my life..... hey- what do I know???? he,he,

Jeanne,
I would love to be able to find some pepper plants with the peppers on them... my son thinks that hot peppers are the main course of any meal... he even puts jalapenos in his scrambled eggs.... cast iron stomach I am saying.. and he thinks salsa should come in 5 gallon containers.. lol
where do you shop?? lmao
take care and have a great day...
Nina
Top of the morning to you nana. May a ray of Sunshine touch that sweet little face of yours through the window this morning. I am on my way out the door to collect some sweet little seeds, and to plant some purslane and crocosmia, while I think of you.

Hey Nana!
Went out early this morning and watered..... hopefully can do more when I get home from work!!
Hope your feeling fine today and staying cool!!!
-JSS
Hi Nana
Well today I received a big box of daylilies and Irises, so you know what I was doing for a couple of hours.
I went out this morning and smelled all the flowers just for you and mmmm did they smell wonderful. well and the mint too. LOL
My Zinnias have runneth over and exploded they are like rabbits and have mulitpyed. That [profanity removed] energizer bunny has been at it again, Running a mock in the garden.
There are Zinnias everywhere, and I know I didn't plant them all. But boy is it pretty now. There are Zinnias of every color right now.
We have been watering about every other day here as the temps have been in the 90's most days with little rain. The grass looks like hell but the flowers are just going to town.
The front yard is really starting to take shape so I will need to start on the back half next. So this evening we plan to start cutting in the beds back there. We have been doing most of our chore in the evenings as the days are just too hot to do much of anything.
I spent yesterday building shelves for the garage to store all my drying seeds and my garden tools. We are still unpacking boxes that we have stored in the barn.
Every day it is like Christmas as we never know just what we will find in the boxes.
Some of them are from our gift shop that we closed last August, We have what is called Pumpkin show which is a big street fair with rides in the middle of town and lots of food. Well we plan on setting up a booth again this year to sell off the rest of our inventory.
So we have been sorting, unpacking, setting up, and remarking the gifts for the show and I hope to make a few new things before then as well.
We sell a lot of wooden cut out pumpkin stakes around here just before the Pumpkin show.
Well that's abpout it for now, keep cool.
Mike and the girls
