Unique Treasures, the Baby Woodpecker is a different one. I bet they are Downy WPs. The males have red on the head and each of them, I have heard, have different patterns on their backs. here is one in my yard.

I had a feeling they might have been Downy Woodpeckers, but wasn't sure. I haven't seen any of them yet this year.

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Great photos everyone!

I really like the Downy WPs. I had them last year and the year before but haven't seen any this year.

The Wrens are so cute, I know we have them here, I see them in the summer but never in the winter, I don't know where they are, my book says they're supposed to be here year round.

Lily - the nuthatches as almost as fast as the chickadees, they'll linger for a while on the suet but they hit the seed feeders and are gone!

I'm having a problem with Mr. Mockingbird today. I finally bought him some apples and oranges yesterday, to go with the peanut butter concoction that he's been eating. This morning he was being nice but this afternoon, he's guarding all 9 feeders (only 1 has fruit) do you all suppose he'll give up after a while or should I move "his" feeder to a different location. He's running off anything that tries to feed, Cardinals, Finches, Titmice another Mock etc.... He'll either perch on "his" feeder or in the nearby red buds and fly at anything that comes around.

That is one fat Mockingbird! LOL!! I bet that it is nesting somewhere close and is protecting it.

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

LOL, he's been swelled up all day, maybe it's all of that peanut butter he's been eating! It's pretty cold today and cloudy too, maybe 30, I don't know if they'd be getting ready to nest this early, would they?? I need to study up some on the various birds habits instead of just taking pictures :-)

UniQue, The one on the feeder is a completely different type of woodpecker than the first pic of the 2 downys on the tree, Nice pics!!

Lily, Love your Nuthatch!

Sheila, love your Downy pic!

Nice pics Gardenpom!

Rare bird sighting! ;-)

Betcha haven't seen the White Collared Junco before. I first saw him a couple months ago, but wasn't able to get images. Saw him yeterday, but only fleetingly. Today I was ready with the camera.

You win that bet tigerlily! The ones that come see me stay toward the back corner, but they are Dark-eyed. Robin is getting more friendly these days.. Mockingbird tries to defend the territory, but more from other Mocks. I was outside yesterday and there was a Mock stand off on the roof, while Robin came in to the flat hanging feeder and chowed down on cherries, LOL!

I love your Wren picture Pelle!
Today another Hawk came by. Pretty small compared to most.. yet very brave. I was outside but I didn't have my camera. So I went inside to get it, looked out the window, and it was sitting there on the fence like this>

I love everyone's pics. I have a question about little wrens. Do they build in a birdhouse for you? I don't even see them at my house. My son built a little wren house hoping to attract one.

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

Thanks so much everyone, for sharing your photos. I'm really enjoying them!

Marlton, NJ

Really nice pic deb! Look at those big eyes!

Blue, I'm not positive what you mean by "build in a bird house for you".

Theres many other birds that might occupy a wren house like the chickadee.

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

What treat Tigerlily!! Thanks so much for sharing that with us! How exicting that must have been. Maybe it will take up residence at your house.

Hi bluegrassmom! How nice that your son built a wren house! I'm sure he will be watching it eagerly this summer. Wrens do like to build nests in houses. It sometimes takes more than a season to get a bird in a house though. Sometimes birds have used a house I put out right away and sometimes it has taken years. I have no idea why. Wrens like to nest in the strangest places besides houses too. For two years we had a wren sneak in through a narrow vent in our janitor's room at the school I work in and build a nest between bottles of cleaning fluids. They finally replaced the vent and we don't get them anymore. I sure hope you house does get occupants this year!

Wow, beautiful hawk Deb!

Congrats Tigerlily! You got a great picture of a rare siteing too!
Nice looking Hawk Deb, the feathers look so soft. I guess he thinks you are feeding those birds just for him. Hope he doesn't bring back a family!
Wren's will build lots of rare places. One was in a trailer hitch at my Aunt's once. Then my sister had one build in a hanging basket. We were watching and taking pictures a couple weeks ago and this Wren though our BBQ might have a vacancy sign!

We've also had wrens build nests in odd spots. Last season they came through a hold in the screen on our back porch and built a nest between a bag of orchid chips and a watering can on a shelf. Everytime I'd walk onto the porch, which was really hard to avoid doing, she would scold me terribly! Finally when mom was out, I hung a little cloth up in front of the shelf so they'd have privacy, and they seemed to be quite happy after that.

We also had house finches nest in our hanging boston ferns on our front porch.

We have several bird houses on our lot, but I've yet to see a bird use one. :) Maybe this year.

Sheila: I would bet that wren is scouting for a nesting spot.

Tiger: Thanks for the new junco. I had not even heard of that one!

Fox Sparrow

Every image I have of these show the need for a toenail trim. Glad it's a mellow bird, 'cause there's lots of them here, and I'd think they could do some damage if so inclined.

Fox Sparrows are so darn cute, aren't they?? I've never noticed their little scissor hands before (nice description, Sheila!!).

I haven't had anybody new at the feeders lately, but thought this shot of the Steller's Jay was cute.

Thanks Sheila,

Too late... the whole family knows about this place now, I see all sizes of SS and some Coops. You're probably right, they must think I am fattening up the sparrows just for them.

The first pass for today was at daylight... around 7 something am.

:-)

The windows are all iced over but I just wanted to show some of the feeders today. Everything is covered with ice and more frozen sleet coming down, high winds too.

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

Ohhhhh, how gloomy and COLD looking!

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Wow, Pelletory!! Good photo - makes me want to put another sweater on!!!

Marlton, NJ

I had to go out and pull the ice of the perch ring on that squirrel buster feeder, since its weight activated the ice was pulling it down and closing all the portals.

Heres a House Finch on one of the other feeders. You can see the Suet log is all frozen over and some of the birds have pecked through the ice to get to the suet.

I did go out and throw some cheap seed around on the ground, heres a Junco eating that.

I would bring in the feeders one at a time to thaw the ice but the freezing sleet is still coming down so it wouldn't last but a very short time.

Stay warm, Pelle!!!!

Marlton, NJ

Thanks Murmur, I will. I'm only going out to help the birds.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Pelle: I love the little juncos!

Haven't had to many visitors today, even tho it's supposed to turn very cold tonight. Maybe because there've been a couple of hawks circling most of the morning. I can hear nuthatches squeaking, but they won't come on down!

This little guy has been around alot. Most of the pics I took are just a blur, but here he was almost still (except for one foot!). Taken through the kitchen window.

Nice pic Debin! I love the CW's. As soon as the starlings leave I'll be able to put the worms out for the wrens again.

Marlton, NJ

This feeder plate is solid ice all the way around so I couldn't get it out (theres peanuts underneath all the ice) so I put peanuts on top.

Oh my Pelle, bless your heart and the birds too! We had a terrible ice storm a few years ago and were without power for 7 days, the ice/freezing rain predictions really throw me into a panic now. Be careful and don't slip when you go out to tend the feeders.

We got a lot of rain yesterday, it turned to freezing sometime after dark but then stopped, thank goodness! The feeders only had a little bit of ice on them this a.m. My crazy Mockingbird is still guarding his frozen oranges, LOL.
