daily pics - page 2

Lilyfantn: I know what you mean. I was thrilled just to have one of this guy more or less in focus. He has been around all day but it's as if he knows I'm waiting to get his pic.

Here he is on the suet feeder. I need to get those suet logs squished in better.

Pelle: Aha! See? That's what they look like up close! LOL! U did good!

Just after my last post, the little sneak came and sat on the fruit feeder that's 4 ft from the window. Soon as I got my camera to the glass......phhssstt...Gone! :)

I like your pic pic with the soft edges Deb! I love the Carolina Wrens and I'm hoping to be able to get them to come close to the house soon for some worms.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Nice pictures both of you!!
Pelle, did you make the suet feeder and the sticks? I saw an expensive one on a site and thought to myself ..."I could make one of those". I couldn't see paying $20 plus for it.

Marlton, NJ

LOL, no I paid for mine but it was much less than $20. The suet sticks are store bought too; these are Sunflower Heart suet.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Well I was exagerating, it's only $10, but still wouldn't be hard to do. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=12399&N=2005+113865
LOL!
Here is my click of the day. I used an old candle holder that I took the glass out of. The wren is inspecting it but didn't go into it. A Warbler did go in and then got a bit paniced before flying out. It will take some getting used to I guess. It will work on keeping the squirrels from eating their fill though.

Awesome idea Sheila! Great thinking outside of the box! I bookmarked the site you linked to. I like the look of that suet feeder. I've never used suet, but I bet I could learn to make it. :-)

I have got all kinds of candle holders. It's an obsession of mine. I'll have to see if I can find something to work like that. Thanks for sharing your cleverness. :-)

Janet

ps I'm loving the photos. Don't have any of my own to share... at the moment. I did get some more sunflower seeds today but have been too busy this afternoon to get them out. I'll put them all out in the morning along with the bread I found in my freezer today that is thawing even as I type. :-)

Hi folks,
Loved the puffy Blue Jay and the Squirrel pics. Our resident black squirrel just feasts at the feeders and drives my cat bonkers. Also, loved the Carolina Wren. Here's one of my two Carolina Wrens that regularly visit.

That little Carolina Wren has gotten around today. SC, NJ, TX, & OH!! LOL!! They are fast enough to do it!

Lily - Loved your fluffy Blue Jay photo! Too cute! And all your photos are so much fun to view!

As is DebinSC's photos! You gals are great with the photographic eye! You are both catching some great shots!! Actually, everyone who has posted photos are such a joy to see! Thanks to all for posting so many great bird and squirrel shots!

It is warm here, so I am only getting the resident birds. I have several Blue Jays that frequent my feeders. Today I was out working in the yard and the Blue Jay was squawking at me! He was fussing and scolding me very loudly. He finally just flew to the feeder to grab the peanuts. And the cardinals followed right after him. The female cardinal was more interested in watching me than eating. She was really curious to see what I was doing. And then the squirrels got into the act following me around the yard from a safe distance. It seems these birds and rodents follow each other around from yard to yard in my neigborhood. Where one goes, the rest will follow. LOL!

I think the squirrels have a secret stash of hi-tech maps of their neighborhoods. ...with ratings.

Kathleen: Do you have any photo's of your black squirrel?

Hi all! Wow I sure missed a lot in one day! Pell I love your new suet log - and I see you have a customer already!

Sheila I am in AWE of your thinking outside the box too! I just love your candle holder set up. Way to go.

Hi Kathleen - that is a great wren picture. They are so hard to capture and you don't usually get to see them from that perspective. I would love to see some black squirrels too! My sister gets them in NJ but I have never seen any here.

Hi Becky! I seem to be getting mostly residents now too. I love your description of the other birds taking their cue from the blue jays. Now that I think of it that happens here too! Good eye!

LOLOL - "high tech maps" I'm rolling on the floor over that one!

Here is Agent Skitter on the job...

Yesterday DH and I drove all the way to Knoxville just so I could go to the nearest Wild Birds Unlimited store lol. We did stop in a few camping stores for him so the trip was mutually beneficial. I got two more of their pole set ups for bird houses and some of the bug suet that Pell mentioned and a new paddle shaped suet feeder which I need to set up today. Of course now that we are home I thought of something else I should have gotten aaargh! I sure wish they did mail orders.

Here's an unusual bird that showed up today....

(I'm only kidding ha ha! I just hate not having a daily bird to post. This one was taken in the butterfly emporium at the Museum of Science in N. Car. I have no idea what it is lol)

I've got a lot of "little brown birds" in my yard most of the year. I always thought they were sparrows. After seeing everyone else's photos, I'm not so sure any more. I will post some photos that I took of them last year. Maybe you all can set me straight on what is out there.

Hubby built an "apartment complex" for them a few years ago.

Seems like there are 2 different types of brown birds, now that I'm looking closer.

Lily,

Your blue bird is beautiful. So unusual. Love that squirrel. You get such great shots!

I'm guessing these are male and female House Sparrows. What I used to call English Sparrows when I was little.

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

Oh I just missed your woodpecker pic! Love that! Is that a young one? I notice there is no red on its head yet.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Well GOOD then! They ARE sparrows. I won't have to change the name of the folder they are in. I always enjoy watching them as I sit on my deck. They flit in and out of the lattice above me.

Here is a photo of 2 baby woodpeckers. I couldn't believe that I got both in the same shot. I tried many times to get a good photo of just one. They blend with the bark of the tree and it's hard to focus on them when they are moving up the tree.

Thumbnail by UniQueTreasures
Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I guess it is a youngster.

We used to have what I called "tuxedo woodpeckers" when we first moved here in 1989. I haven't seen them in many years. The Red headed ones are the only ones I see these days.

Here's another shot of that same woodpecker.

You can just barely see flecks of red on this one's head.

Beautiful pictures gardenpom. It looks like they were all posing just for you!

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

Yes, I agree very nice shots! The one of the mockingbird looks like it is all puffed up. Have you been getting any cold temps in Fla.?

Melbourne, FL

Yes, chilly this morning also...I was only out briefly. It will warm up to the 70's later. Thanks everyone.

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

I just went out and sprinkled some new food and got my first nuthatch pictures. YAY!
