Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Am i the only one that keeps putting seeds in the fridge to germinate?
So far this year i have had Asmina Alliums Clematis Cimifuga and loads others.

LOL... I wish I could take a picture of mine to show you Mike. You open mine up and there sits baggies with tree seeds getting there cold chill and 4" pots of dirt getting stratified. if ya love dirt sandwhiche s for dinner, my fridge is a great place to make one.

I have all my baggie s sitting in little carboard boxes that like 6 packs of wrapped cookies come in. I know there gott a be something better to store them in. Cuz it a pain when ya pulling one batch out to check to make sure no mold developing or if sprouting goign on and you dump another pot over on the kitchen floor trying to get to it. ugggggggg.

i start orange seeds and grape fruit seeds in my fridge Mike

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

This is my fridge where I'm chilling some malt, hops, and yeast. I'm not certain how long I'm suppose to chill them in these convenient cans but I don't think they will make it to spring.

If it sprouts, what then?????????

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Hops has the best Latin name though don't it! Espesially if its the golden one.
Humulus lupulus aureus.... heheh

I don't feel so bad in the first pic you can see the top of a bottle of champers! lol

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

a friend of mine who has a website and sells seeds told me just to put the seeds in the deep freeze for a week and it does the same thing as planting and taking up all the frig space???????????

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Some seed needs the higher temps like Alliums but the deepfreeze thing works that germinate once back into warmer weather.

I wish germinating seeds was easy and you just lobbed them in a pot and they grew!. So much fuss with some of them

Fayette, MO(Zone 6a)

I feel so much more normal after reading this thread.. and thanks for the laugh! I am stratifying enough seeds ( pecan, carpathian walnuts, cherry, etc.. etc.. ).. to sink a very large ocean liner ) and NOW it's February .... YEAH!! Now, I am going to take my scion wood cuttings.. an old pear tree in the neighborhood is on my list for tomorrow.. I've been trying to clean out the refrigerator to make space..

So... I've made the big desicion to buy a used refrigerator for my projects.. come to think of it.. I've had my own malt, hops, and yeast stratifying in there just long enough..

Thornton, IL

Tomorrow is THE day to take out the malt, hops, and yeast!! Esp for football fans.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Do you mean Football or Soccer?
Feb is the coldest month for me! I'm just having breakfast then i'll take a pic of the frost last night..... it was deadly!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Mike

FROST !!! I wish it was warm enough for frost. 10 degrees (F) outside this morning. Oh! and by the way, over on this side of the pond, we call it football.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Oh yeah Football as you call it where you pick up the ball with your foot! ..... oh no i mean hands! Lol whats that all about?
So why is Football called Soccer with you guys?
Now baseball ..... isnt that just rounders? We let girl guides play that. lol

Only j/k with yah.

Here is some frost for you.

A little more to keep you..... hmm warm?

Oh my, I see I am amongst friends here with all the refrigerators filled to the brim. My husband kicked me out of the kitchen frig two years ago and bought me a plant refrierator for the garage because he seemed to feel that refrigerators were for food. Silly him. I need to show him this thread so he understands I was not the only one abusing my kitchen privileges.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

heheh. Yeah same but it's my wife who isn't to sure about the use!
Neiter does she understand why i have strip lights on over little pots in the room she keeps the washing!

Mike

Oh silly her... if she'd simply spread her washing out all over the house to be folded... that would leave you more room for strip lights. Spouses these days! They just don't understand our plants have needs to be met.

Thornton, IL

GO BEARS!!

Sorry Mike, you say tom-ah-toe, I sat tom-ate-oh.

Fayette, MO(Zone 6a)

I was going to use the "full refrigerator" excuse to eat out more..

mike_freck,, Those must have been some pretty flowers before the frost hit them..

somewhere, PA

I have a bulb/seed refridgerator too. I bought one of those white boards and
use it to keep track of the dates to pull things out. I write the dates they go in
and when they should come out on the tags on the pots and then transfer them
to the white board as I put them into the fridge. Then I know to look for the pots
to pull them out when I see the date come due.

Ahhhh... it is good to be amongst like minded folks.

And the spare fridge can come in handy for food on occasion too.

Tam

Thornton, IL

How cold must you keep the spare fridge? We have an old one in the basement, that I was *gasp* going to get rid of. What sorts of things do you guys put in there?

PGZ5! Horrors! What were you thinking???
Ours is kept at 38°.

Fayette, MO(Zone 6a)

my goodness Tammy.. you are organized.. !!!!!

I just put 4 gallon baggies full of pear scion wood.. I haven't labeled them yet.. Better do that...

I have my larger nuts in the plastic coffee containers.. and some of the smaller seeds I have put in plastic medicine containers.. some of them I've labeled.. some not..

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

PGZ5 you sat on a Tomato? hehe Thats a funny typo..... Beats the one where i said i was fat!

I have a friend that Coaches "soccer" over there in the states he usually does about 8 months then comes back for a bit of home! Nothing like home. Where ever that is.

I keep all my unsown stuff in the fridge and then any seeds that germinate in either early spring or stuff that needs a cold period like stuff that should be autumn sown. I could just put it outside but its bound to get kicked or a bird will mess it up trying to find worms!

If anyone wants a copy of my spreadsheet let me know. Its in excel and has germinates details latin and common names for about 500 plants.

Mike

somewhere, PA

I force bulbs & the pots take up quite a bit of space. And I start seeds of various alpines for
the rock garden seed sales as well as myself. Lots of perennials, shrubs, and trees require
periods of cold and even alternating warm/cold/warm. Plus of course, seed storage. So...that's
what I've got in my "plant" refridgerator.

Tam

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

I keep my venus flytraps in the fridge to give them their winter dormancy.

Tom

Hey Tommy, good to see you over here! I kept actual plants in my frig before too. How are your VFTs doing?

Does anyone use their frig exclusively for food?

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Food ..... you having a laugh? Its not important when you have plants! lol

My sentiments exactly. After all... isn't that why restaurants take reservations?

Thornton, IL

He he.

Thornton, IL

I am of German descent, and I would have to say that IS normal. LOL

somewhere, PA

I work with a german and he is one of the most polite and charming men I've
met. I'm quite sure that behavior is NOT typical.

Tam

Thornton, IL

Tam - I was j/k.

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

Equil.,
I took 2 VFTs out last week, couldn't wait until Valentine's day, needed a VFT fix. Seem to be doing fine. Now I just hope my sarrs in the attic make it, it does get greezing up there...

Tom

Everyone needs a fix now and then. The Sarracenia are tough. I had a couple hundred freeze solid in their pots on the patio when we had an unexpected cold snap one November and I don't think I lost but one or two and those could have been destined for plant heaven anyway. You'll be fine.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Whats wrong with that? Like burping......compliments to the cheif!

Thornton, IL

I'm sure he would agree! LOL
