Yeah nice catch for the hawk too, hehe! That happens a lot around here too.
A veritable fly through resturant for Coops and SS Hawks, lol!
Hey btw all! back there on the ID of the ycnh, ..If Sheila had not pointed it out, it would have gone right past me. Yet I have seen the ycnh and Ben and I are always in the books. That's a very striking bird as an adult, with the plume in the crown, and the mask... I first saw them a couple summers ago in a ditch in Southlake, (not too far from me). I think Sheila has seen them quite a bit too.. So thank her for that one:-)!
Honestly, when I saw that Resin had confirmed claypa, I didn't, or wouldn't have stopped to notice that it could be anything else. Then I looked in the 3 books and then ask.com on juv.ycnh, and there it was. Claypa, I lingerd on the white dots too, but the beak was the real tell tale for me this time.
Janet~We get daily visits from the hawks that prey on feeder birds. I can tell when they are out there because I will hear the terror & distress clearly in the sparows chirping, then it is followed by a dead silence. In the case of this pic he brazenly ate their cousin right there on the fence. That silence is a weird sound around here....unmistakable to me now. We do have lots of birds, as I still think people might be filling their feeders in Spring/Summer only. My neighbor next door and I always have full feeders.

That's a great picture, you can just see why they call these 'Red-bellied'!
Oh and thank you claypa.
Tigerlily: I 2nd what everyone else said already. Great photos!! I especially love the chestnut chick. with his wings up.
Janet: Very good pics of your lil' heron - especially from so far off.
Pelle: Starlings are gorgeous birds - but I hear what you're sayin'! :)
I didn't get to take any pics today, so here's an old one. Little green Heron, sunset .
Deb
pell, I've got those dratted starlings ruining my house! Some fuss about woodpecker damage, but here it's the starlings. We finally got a new roof up last fall, but some of the boards we would attach the gutters to need to be replaced. Starlings pecked holes and were roosting inside! DH is a trucker, and seldom home, so it had to wait since I am unable to move the extention ladder. We stapled up some screen until those boards can be replaced. Starlings still show up every day looking for a way in.
Love this thread! Thanks all of you for your contributions.
Here's a couple stellar shots I got today.
Tigerlily, those are absolutely the best photos of a Steller's Jay that I have ever seen - good work!
Tigerlily, I agree that this thread is awesome. So many good photos in here. Your photos are all awesome. So clear and crisp. You have a fantastic eye and much patience to get such great shots. I've never seen most of the birds that you've posted, so this is a real treat for me. Thank you so much.
Janet
Jays are as difficult to get images of the tiny birds that flit all over in the woods. And like other folks, I prefer natural (no man stuff) in nature shots. I've tried for weeks to get decent shots of them, and finally smeared suet on rocks and bark, and threw sunflower seeds on the ground. Then sat and waited. Your compliments tell me it paid off. Thanks!
This afternoon a baldy circled over, I saw the seasons very first butterfly, and tonight there's a moth at the window.
Nice day!
UT, that's the nicest part of sharing photos...............letting others see what they haven't before. So glad you are enjoying too.
Sheila, I'm not sure about the sparrow. There are so many that are so similiar. Were it summertime, I'd think it was a immature Golden Crown.
Let's see some more from other parts of the globe!
Great pics of the Steller! I think their such a handsome bird.

Thats a cool one tiger!
He is very different looking! Thanks tiger!
Tiger: How close were you able to get to the stellars? Thanks for posting those. They are so pretty. Two types of jays I'd never see otherwise. :)
I haven't gotten anything other than "the usual suspects" the past few days, but I have the day off today so I'm hopeful.
This is just the mockingbird - again. He's been hogging the suet for days; now he wants the fruit and nuts all to himself, too! Can't wait to see how he's going to guard them both! Here he is, eyeing the fruit and me - at the same time. :0
Deb(inSC)
Deb - I'm glad you posted that pic, I've got several baskets just taking up space, I think the birds will get a couple of new feeders this weekend :-) Love the mockingbird too, I've seen mine on the suet 1 time and that's it, I think I need to give him some fruit.
Deb, I sat and waited for them to come near me. First Stellars photo was probably from a 12-15 feet, and the second about twice that far. Once in awhile one would nearly land on me, until it sensed I was a living thing, lol! They can turn and scoot really fast! Stellars are very skittery birds.
tigerlily, I have found Steller's Jays are reasonably easy to "tame" to the point they will, quickly snatch a peanut, from my hand. (Only unsalted peanuts in the shell. They don't like the salted ones nearly as well.) However, it takes time to gain their trust. For many years, I had one that would go around the house sitting on the window sills until he found me. Then he would tap on the glass, so I would bring him a handful of peanuts. I'm not really sure who tamed who.
Correction on the name: It is Steller's Jay named by German naturalist and explorer Georg Wilhelm Steller (1709-1746) He explored in what is now my neighborhood, and named at lot of things with Steller.
Very nice pic Debin!!
Sadie: You found me out! I had so many odd little baskets and the ducks broke my flat feeder, so I improvised. :)
Not the prettiest set-up (I also made a suet feeder out of hardware cloth.) but the birdies don't care.
Deb
tiger: I thought Scrub Jays were only to be found in selected areas of South Florida...guess that is wrong. Glad you caught that picture before he got blown away.
Joyce
Good morning! Just wanted to let you know I started a page 2 for this thread as it was getting slow for me to load. What a gorgeous day here - I hope to see lots more pics!
Ooops - sorry - withdrawn due to my brain not functioning properly! :)
