Nifty, you are surely doing a great job identifying plants on that Forum, thank you very much.
Texas Statewide Roundup-April 28, 2007, College Station
Thanks, frostweed, for mentioning that. It's fun for me! :-)
I realize the majority of working people have Saturdays & Sundays off. I'll have to try to attend a local roundup in the fall.
We normally have ours on a Sunday in October here in Arlington, I hope you well be able to come so we can meet you.
Josephine.
Yes Nifty ... you are just too close not to come. ...and our Arlington bash is getting bigger and bigger every year!
Sylvia
Josephine how is our Phd student doing? Have you heard from him? I miss him.

He is really busy, and is having to back off some from Dave's. I miss him too.
Josephine.
Does anyone have Bowl's wallflower? I saw it at the Rose Emporium in SA and it was amazing. Kind of the color of rosemarry, but more spread out and has the most awsome flower. They said it gets full sun and they water it only in July and August. I gotta have this one!
Actually, your PhD friend was over on Garden Web saying he wasn't involved in Dave's anymore:

To Quote exactly:
"All right.. I am here after leaving another sit online that wanted to charge more and sold out so I am here and loving it. It is Sylvia that first let me know about Garden Web and we live sooo close I from time to time get a few of the plants that are extras in her garden. I am in Glenn Heights TX, born in OK but lived with my folks in TX, Mexico, Costa Rica, MI, and Swaziland before I headed here for college. I loved it here and just never left. I have gardened from the time I can rememeber - and even in my college dorm grew starberries. I love iris, roses, fruit trees, and anything native... I even let a few dandilions grow here ... I know bad bad bad... I salvage plants from sites, seeds too, and share with non gardeners and the kids at school - oh I teach in Dallas first grade i try to garden up there ... the kids love it in fact we are getting ready to do so rose cuttings now... anyway I am married for 4 years now and have a 3 year old son.. my one and only. I love to be here and cannot wait to get a better feel for the board and jump in!
Thanks Mitch"
Very interesting Debbie, I guess he didn't like the changes, but I think he will be back, anyway, I miss him.
Josephine.
I was wondering what happened to Mitch.
Actually it was a fluke I noticed it--I'm seldom over there myself. A friend had told me to email someone over there that wanted to trade some rain lilies with me and I couldn't find their post--so I was looking thru them all.
I will probably be at the spring RU--just not sure what I can bring up yet--and I'm busy this time of year with orders.
Debbie, do you still want some daturas? I have 4 that survived my gh neglect.:)
Sandy, do you believe that there are no accidents? I have been a DG member for only about 1 year. Today I finally opened up the invitation I received some time ago to the April 28 event in College Station and with much interest I began to browse around. It took me some time to figure out who was talking to whom as I perused the "thread" and then how to add my two cents.
I was soon captivated by your entries. I believe I finally deciphered the following: you have experienced a great loss, for various reasons you are on the fence about going to the RU, (I'm still a bit at a loss as to what that acronym means, but I believe I get the gist.), you are 51, you know numerous people in DG, and you would love to be at the RU but you don't want to do the long drive by yourself.
Here is part of why I'm offering you a ride: I just turned 54, I don't know anyone in DG, it would be great to have a personal guide to the DG event, especially one who is already beloved by many in the "Garden," and something just told me I was to offer this ride to you.
Anyway, I wouldn't expect you to jump on this offer without knowing more about me and I'm not sure how I should get you more info. I could add it here on the "thread," and I would gladly do that, but I don't want to hog the space or bore everyone. I would gladly give you my Yahoo email address here but I'm not sure DG would find that acceptable. (Let me know.)
In regards to the April 28 event: since I don't know what to expect as to what all goes on and for how long, I have assumed I would make it a one-day deal. In other words, I would drive over and back in the same day. I live three miles south of the Galleria in Houston. I literally live in the City of Bellaire.
Here is some of what I believe:
Some people are a word in your life, others an entire book; browse, each is a contributor to your story; realize the value in their part.
Timothy Preston Hart
Death for the Christian is not death at all but simply movement through a door called “death” to a new dimension of life with God. I have been a sailor since I was twelve and I experienced my share of death when I was a teenager. I have always found the following parable very meaningful. My hope is that it will have significance for you, too, and bring peace to your heart:
Henry Van Dyke’s Parable of Immortality:
I am standing on the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, ‘There she goes!’
‘Gone where?’ Gone from my sight - that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and span as she was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of her destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says, ‘There she goes!’ there are other eyes watching her coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, ‘Here she comes! Here she comes!’ on the other shore.”
Many hundreds of people in Houston know me or know of me. Despite the fact that I have multiple sclerosis and can not walk unaided, I am very active. I use a scooter to do my walking and I like to do many things, including sky diving.
So even if you are not interested in a ride with me perhaps you, or someone reading this, could give me an idea of how accessible the DG event will be. It would be nice to know before I drive all the way to CS and find out everything is held upstairs and there is no elevator.
I hope to hear from you.
Tim
Trahmit, I will let Sandy respond to your beautiful letter, but I want to let you know that the pavilion where the R.U. short for (Round Up ) is held is fully accessible and a beautiful person such as you will be very welcomed there.
Josephine.
Tim - thanks for sharing the parable. Having lost two close relatives in the past 18 months, it provides a peaceful image. My uncle's heirloom white iris bloomed its very first time on Easter Sunday this year - almost a year to the day after his passing. I dug a start from his garden after his memorial service. He was 102 - and an avid gardener. My mom and my uncle were my gardening role models, and my daughter has caught the bug, too!
Anyway - went to the fall RU (round up) and had a wonderful time meeting the DG Texas crowd. I came home with some great starts and seeds, and some new gardening friends. I learned a lot! Unfortunately, I'm probably not going to be able to come this spring. My dh has an evening business event that we have to be all "cleaned up" for and on time! I'll really miss seeing folks and meeting new DG'rs. If I decide I can cut it close, though, I'll come.
Anyway - The pavilion is very accessible - a sidewalk and the pavilion is paved in concrete with picnic style tables. Maybe someone who's been more than once can speak to this. You'll enjoy the talk, the trades (even if anyone doesn't have any - go anyway!) and the food.
I enjoyed your post, especially about the ship. My Dad died in 2000. Just a few days before he died he fell into a coma. Everybody went into say goodbye to him. I simply told him "I'll see you on the other side."
I am also curious as to where in Bellaire you live. I grew up on Palmetto Street. The house is gone though.
You'll have a good time at the RU. Whether you like plants or not, doesn't matter. If you don't have anything to trade, please come and get some. Most people bring lots of extras. You'll probably have some to trade at the next RU. If you read the beginning of this thread, you probably noticed that we met for breakfast at the Golden Corral last year. I assume we'll do that again this year. I don't know if I'll be there for breakfast though. I hope there will be some people going out to eat for supper afterwards. Last year it was a good opportunity to get to know people that I had "met" in cyberspace already.
Tim,
You can Dmail me. Just click on my username and on send me a Dmail.
I want to start out by saying thank you for your off of a ride. I told CJ around 6 weeks ago I would ride with her. I am spending Friday night with her and we are going up Sat and I am sending the night Sat. night.
.
The pavilion has easy access and it would be great to have you come. I will save you a place to sit. It was wonderful when DH and I went last year. Everyone was so great and caring. Dennis my DH looked forward to going in the fall but he passed away unexpectantly on Sept 15th. I have been pretty much lost and hiding in my house. I hate to cry when I go places and I figured I would just burden everyone with my hurt and tears. But I have realized what better place to be than with the family I have here. It would not speak to highly of my Dennis if I hide out forever. And I would not be fair to my family here if I did not let them love on me and bring comfort to my heart. Dennis did not like to go places with alot of other people but he decided to come with me. It was wonderful how he and I felt like we knew everyone all our lives.
It would be great to meet you. The Parable of Immortality: It is so beautiful. I would have never thought of anything like that and I want to print it out and
put it where I can see all the time. My DS will also love it. Thank you for a wonderful way to see this differently. And I do believe there are no accidents. I believe you are here to deliver a message not to just me but for all to read.
You will love the people at the round up more than the plants. If you check out the thread for trades, no one will mind you asking for anything they have. Just go introduce yourself and please post the parable. It is absolutely beautiful. I will D-mail you and give you my e-mail address. It is a good idea not to post some things publicly for safety reasons as we are on the internet.
Hope to here from you soon.
To all my wonderful family, I am counting the days to the round-up. Can't wait to see you all there.
Abundant Blessings,
Sandy ^8^
Just a few days now until the RU, so I am bringing this back to the top.
So sorry I can't join you all. When I RSVPed earlier in the year that I would be there, who knew a newborn baby was on the way! NOT MINE, of course. But, my niece is having her firstborn (a baby girl, Madison Alaine). We're driving home to New Orleans this weekend for a baby shower with our family who are all still there. Easier for us to go to them in LA.
I was looking forward to meeting so many I have shared with over these past two years in the garden. Hope to make it next year.
Somebody give my regards to EVERYBODY!
Linda
We'll miss you Linda.
Thanks Silverfluter. I'm missing you all, already....;-(
So this makes the next RU just that more important.
Gotcha!
For all those attending the roundup....2 announcements!
1) Please let me know if you plan on attending on the head count thread so everyone can get a rough idea of how many people are going to be there. The thread is here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/716231/
2) For those coming for breakfast at the Golden Corral, I was unable to book the back room. Someone else got it first. However, they will be setting aside tables together for us at the restaurant. Please let them know you are from Dave's Garden when you arrive to find our seating.
Thanks! Kim
If I'm not there for breakfast, don't wait.
Our group is going to try to get there for breakfast, no guarantees as to what time we'll arrive.
We are not going to make it there for breakfast, but we'll try to be at the pavilion at 10-ish. :-)
I gave two people at the RU Ernest Hemingway Datura seedlings. I just found out yesterday these are NOT from the Hemingway estate. Please take the Hemingway name off them so they want get confused with the real Hemingway daturas. The lady that sent me these seed is from Lady Lake, Fl.
While on Ebay yesterday, I emailed a lady that had these same seed, and told her how lucky I was to acquire them from a GW trade. I told her my traders name, and this person is the very same who stole her photographs, & verbiage!!!
I will either purchase the real Hemingway Datura seeds, or try bidding on them. Please email me if I gave you a seedling, and I'll make sure you get the correct seeds. Sorry, I can't find my trade list.
I was so proud to share what I thought was the E.H. daturas....now I just feel sick about this mess.
Dollie
Somebody post a report on the success of the RU in College Station, please. I'm feeling a "College Station RU -- High Points" thread in the making?
Here it is for you; http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/717633/
Josephine.
oops....I started a thread too....sorry...
DAVE, DELETE THAT OTHER THREAD, PLEASE!
Any plans for a Fall roundup in CS?
We have our North Texas one in the works.
Yes we would like to have it the last weekend of October, not it is not soup yet.
Josephine.
I would like one in CS - missed the one last year. But, does that mean the rest of you wouldn't come because of the N Texas RU?
Sorry I can't be there, but I hope you have a great time.:)
Set a date, and we'll come if we can!
Same here. Please, please not Nov 3. But if you have to, I'll understand. Sigh........
Ahhh Ceejay, you need to come this way too. BTW I could not get that firecracker plant going ... but my Toros are huge and all over the place. :) Thank you.
If that fircracker plant is in full sun with good drainage, how can it not live??!! Seriously.
I dont know Cee Jay .... I just dont know. ...sob ...
