Post #3139836 guess I didn't do it right; will try again.
[HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]
Now I get it; you click on the post # and after it opens; you copy the url and paste it into your post; very cool.
Thanks, Dave!

Out of curiosity, I checked Post #1 and look what I found!
http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=1
dave
Okay, here's a step-by-step that hopefully is pretty easy ;o)
1) move your mouse to "hover" over the link you want to copy.
2) right-click (we usually left-click to make the mouse do what we want; this is using the right-hand side of the mouse).
3) select "copy link location" from the list of choices that appear.
4) go to wherever you want to add the link.
5) left-click your mouse on the exact spot where you want to insert it
6) click on "edit" in your browser bar, then click on "paste" from the list of choices
Think of copy and paste like riding a bike - it's easier than it sounds. Actually, it's easier to DO than to document the instructions for how to do it, lol.
Gardenwife, great idea!!
Dave......you've done it again, and it was implemented so quickly.
You never cease to amaze me!!
Thanks,
Gracie

OK, Terry - If this doesn't work, I'm going right for the brandy !!!
Here goes X-crossing my fingers and thanks a bunch.
Mahnot, you did it!
Why, Dave, I didn't know you cared.....LOL.... thank you.
I like you too. :o)
chuckle....
Terry, an alternative to step #6 is to leave your mouse at the insertion point, right click it and then left click "paste" from the drop-down menu that appears. (I guess I am just too lazy to move my mouse up to "edit" on the browser bar. LOL)
I didn't even know the browser bar had an edit ( still looking )
ahhh - true.
(I'm a CTRL key person myself...in fact, you can't read the c, x or v keys on my keyboards anymore. (Well, for that matter, I've worn off the a, s, d, f l, ;, e, r, b, n, c, and < keys, too ;o)
Terry, do you need a new keyboard? *giggle
A couple of people mentioned the search function for this above....is it possible? In case someone doesn't link to the post we could just type in the number and be there. It sure is hard to scroll down the page looking for those tiny matching blue numbers, the time time stamp is more effective for that.....well at least in my opinion.
Terry, Re post http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3142447. These instructions don't work for me. Is it because I use Internet Explorer instead of Firefox? I just click on the number and then copy the url, and paste it into my post.
I can't figure out how to search by number, but then I can't think of a reason I would need to....
This is a really neat feature!! Thanks Dave & Terry!
Oh, duh, I think we are talking about the same thing. I misunderstood. Mine just says copy, paste. And I just right click copy and right click paste.

There ya go - you answered your own question I think!
LOL!!! Sometimes it's hard to tell......
Dave, how did you find Post #1?
Nap - I can tell you. Your post, above is 3144184 and the URL is htt p:// davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3144184 (without the spaces, of course)
Replace the 3144184 with 1 and you get that post.
In another thread, we've been kidding around about DG roulette...Plug in a number, see what you get! LOL
I see. Very cool! Thank you! Now, excuse me while I go play the game.....
oooh - an "I feel lucky" game!
Oh, I loved this one!!! http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=7
I like that too!
I put in #10, then clicked on it to bring up the entire thread. After #10, the posts jump to the 44,000s...on the same day. Just curious. Is that because the plant files were added and counted as posts?
nap, that shouldn't be the reason....new PlantFiles entries don't count as a post - only if there's a photo that triggers a new thread in the PF photos forum.
Oh. Thanks. That's curious. Anyway, the game is kinda fun!
Dave mentioned in another thread that he did some reprogramming at one point that caused the numbers to jump like that.
I can save just that post in my journal
Oh, I like this idea!
Ok so if I want someone to see a post from 2 months ago, I just put the # in my journal or something and then punch it in on search and it will come up or I give the number to the person who I want to see it? I am confused. I still don`t know what a co op is and i can`t trade seeds or plants, until i know my damping off problem is done and over. I think.
Since no one has jumped in to answer as yet, let me see if I can explain.
Say I want to show you a post I made on the Bird Watching forum. I can go to my post there:
1. move the mouse over the POST# then click the right mouse button
2. a pop-up menu with a "copy" feature will show up. (mine says copy shortcut)....click on it.
3. Go to the new post box and click inside then click the right mouse button again.
4. A pop-up menu with a "paste" feature will show up....click on it, and your link is there.
5. Before you send your post make sure the link works by PREVIEWing it. You can try the link and see what the reader will see.
Hope this helps.
Sheila, I do it backwards from you, I think.
I have the Cut, Copy & Paste shortcuts on my top toolbar.
So.
I left click on the post # I wish to link to. That post will open up in a new window, I then click on that address to highlight it and click on my 'Copy' icon and close that window.
I then go to where I wish to post and click on my Paste icon as I write my post. http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3148112 like this.
It's not a 'search' tool but a 'direction' tool, Hellen.
Andy P
well i put it in my diary the other way so I will copy it in your way too, more than likely and figure out how and when I will use it later, but I will know a couple of things to do with it.
The right-click method saves you all the extra steps of opening the link in a new window, copying it, and closing that new window. In Windows, right-click is your friend! :) It brings up context-sensitive menus to do all sorts of things, depending on what program you're in and what you're doing.
Andy, I did it that way too until Dave put the post #s in the box by the time. That feature makes it specific to that post and not the whole thread. However if someone wanted to see the thread they have a link at the bottom that would take them to the whole thread.
Try it on this thread. Page up to a post and click the # and put it in your reply. Here is what you would see.
http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3148112
Just trying this out. My choices when I right-clicked said "copy shortcut". Here goes:
http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3142447
OK, I guess it worked like it was supposed to.
Success! You can go to the whole thread that post was from, or simply close the window afterward.
I see it being a great asset on long threads where we are putting trade lists, etc. for Swaps or RUs. You can direct someone directly to your list without haveing to say "I am about 15 post from the top", etc.
How can we use the post number to print that portion of long threads?
I tried that 1gardengram and it worked great. I just clicked on the number of the post I wanted to print. Since it puts it on a separate page, you can "select all" for the full page, or highlight only what you want and use "print selection".
Dianeand Sheila, if you hover over the post# and right click, the window opens up with various selections. One of them is "print target". That will let you print it without even going to it.
