Link to individual posts?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I've been wondering about this for a while, but keep forgetting to ask. Is there a way individual posts could have their own links? It could be something as simple as a text link in the same area where "edit" appears on our own posts. It would be really handy, especially if needing to cite a specific person's post, to be able to link directly to it rather than say "click this link and search the page for so-and-so's 12:42pm post on January 22." or "scroll down about half way".

Any chance of this once the dust settles and you have time?

Spokane Valley, WA(Zone 5b)

Oohhh, I like this idea! Especially since most of us have our time zones set for our own area, so time references don't always work. :)

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Good point - I'd not thought about time zone issues.

Done!

Interesting to see the Post #s. I didn't know we had over 3 million posts...

How do we use it.
Thanks, Dave.

Click on "Post #3140265" and it'll open the post up. You can then link directly to the post.

In what circumstance would you use it? I don't know! :)

Still don't see how it would help 'find' a specific post.

See post #3139836 for the reasoning behind this feature.

This is a great feature. Thanks Dave. I had not thought of it, but I like it a lot.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I love it, it's nice to have a way to direct someone right to a post, especially in those huge long threads where someone made a really great post halfway down, this way people don't have to wade through the entire thread searching for it. Thanks Dave!

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

It's like the "PermaLink" feature on blogs. Post only one entry, not the entire blog. cool

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Got it. Thanks.

Sarahskeeper, good explanation! That's exactly it. Cool, indeed!

So Nifty! Would be nice to have a 'Go to post # ____' like a search feature. Not everyone understands how to 'link' or post a link in a thread.
Just a thought. Either way, nifty!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Clever suggestion! This will be a very nifty tool to use. Thanks!!!!!

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Great new feature! Thanks gardenwife for suggesting it and Dave for jumping on it so quickly!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have often tried to remember a specific post by someone. Is there a way to search for it? That's what I meant about 'finding' a post. If I use the regular search function and type a member's name and some subject - say 'dave cactus', I would not get anything, correct? You can't use members' names in the search, right?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, YAY! I had no idea you'd do it that quickly. Thanks, Dave!

Andy, yes, permalink - exactly! :)

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Victor--you can use member names in the search, first type in the thing you're searching for (in your example above, it would be cactus). Then on the next screen where it shows the initial search results, you can further limit your search to certain forums, or to only show posts by a certain member, just type their name in the box. I don't use the forum search much so I don't know if that option's always been there or not, maybe Dave just added it! But it's there now.

Spokane Valley, WA(Zone 5b)

What a great new feature!!!! Thank you for suggesting it, Kimberley, and Dave... you continue to be awesome in your responses! :)

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

I randomly chose posts to test this out on and sometimes it worked and sometimes I got this
404 Not Found
The requested URL /place/p.php?pid=3101743 was not found on this server.

I do like the idea of it though.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

That will be a great tool when threads for trades or RU swaps, get so long and you are trying to tell someone where to look for your list, etc.
Nice feature! Thanks Gardenwife for suggesting it.
Just another reason why Dave is valuable to NameMedia!! You know how to listen to ideas of the members.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Terry gives an easy explaination of how to use the feature here.
This is a great tool!

Post #3139836 guess I didn't do it right; will try again.

Now I get it; you click on the post # and after it opens; you copy the url and paste it into your post; very cool.

Thanks, Dave!

Gardenwife, Good idea, Post #3139836. It makes communication more concise. Also it will be very helpful to me to use in my diary to reference information of my own posts in coops so I can find them quickly. I can also just note which posts are fine garden information for any topic without having to copy the whole thing out. Thanks, Patti

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Good feature. Something similar to this was discussed a while back.

Good to see it implemented.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Ah, just noticed the individual post numbers. Very neat!

Is there a prize for making the 5000000th post? LOL

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

hehe!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Queen (or King) Gasbag, perhaps? (We used to dub members with that dubious title when their posts runneth over...curiously enough, it became a badge of honor! ;o)

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

I think this is a great feature and I wonder if it could go a step further...... If someone links me directly to a post by a member and after reading the post I decide I would like to read more of the thread it is in, is there a way to connect to the thread itself from the post link?

NoH20: Yes, that's already there. You can click on the subject line at the top, or there is a link at the bottom.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Dave. I love this feature.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks ecrane!

North Augusta, ON

awesome feature, now when I want to save a brilliant piece of information about a certain plant, I can save just that post in my journal, instead of the whole long thread, and having to search through and try to remember why I saved that thread...lol

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Endless possibilities!
