Help! Im new at all this gardening stuff. I live in Bakersfield California. I have a banana tree in the backyard of my new home I haven't a clue on how to take care of it. We recently had a week of freezing temperatures and since my banana tree doesn't look happy. the leaves have all turned brown and brittle. I have heard from some to take it inside, but mine is way too big to do that. Anyone have any advice for me?
Thank you so much-

Banana tree...
What zone is Bakersfield? Also, do you have any idea which type of banana it is?
I'm in zone 8 and we have several freezing nights each year. Musa basjoo doesn't seem to notice. The leaves go brown but I keep a layer of mulch round the base and it does fine. Tries to start growing again everytime the temps get back up near 60. So far this year we've had lows as cold as the mid teens. No problem. If your banana is in the ground, it should come back just fine.
Now, having said all that, I'm no expert, so...You might want to post the same question over on the "tropicals" forum. Or search that forum for this topic. I know I've seen posts there describing various ways to overwinter bananas in different zones.
Hope this helps....
Deb
There's also a tropical fruit forum where people talk about bananas a lot. The key is to figure out which banana you have, if you have one of the more tropical ones then it may not come back if you got hit really hard with the cold, but if it's a hardier sort then it will most likely come back. At this point there's not much you can do but wait and see, give it some time in the spring to see if it comes back or not. If you are expecting any more cold weather you might want to try and protect it a bit if you can so it doesn't get damaged any more.
I visited my cousin in Bakersfield...she just moved to Utah. Her yard was nothing but roses. They must grow well there. She always called it the high desert???????? Anyway , she didn't attempt tropicals at all because it is so little humidity and the nights get cold ????
