A big announcement from Dave

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Hi Dave,
All is well here.
I have a question. I just renewed my subscription 3 months before it was due, for the upcoming year. Will I need to send 10 more dollars or whatever sometime soon?

The best of luck to you in your new venture. This is the first site I visit in the morning and the last at night. You've sure been doing things right and I have every confidence that you will continue to do so.

Congratulations!

There are a few things that concern me. Gardens.com will have articles by members AND COMPANIES WITH MINIMAL COMMERICAL PLUGS. Excuse me for capitalizing, I'm not shouting, I have not figured out how to use the blue type in the box. As a member of DG we are interconnected with Gardens.com so we are all then part of a commercial site. Can we only be members of DG and not part of the commercial site?

Is DG not a commercial site?

And yes, just don't go to gardens.com if you don't want to.

dave

To any who are curious, a member posted a pretty inflammatory post here and I removed it so that I could reply to her in D-Mail (which I did and she hasn't replied to me yet).

I don't operate this forum as a vehicle for people to publicly slam me with personal attacks and insults, and I'm not going to begin now.

For all the rest of you: how can I tell you how much I appreciate your kind, encouraging words and support? Thank you.

Wow!! How scary yet wonderfully exciting for both you and us! CONGRATULATIONS!!

As caring and as thoughtful as you have been handling DG and all of us members/subscribers - is exactly how I pictured you handling this decision you had to make to sell DG. (I know down deep you gave this much thought, care, and searched for guidence while contemplating this big move.) ** I'm confident - it was the right move at the right time.

** Your honesty and upfront question answering makes me feel secure and still "at home" here on DG. You have my continued support and best wishes................as I look forward to enjoying the journey and what's ahead for us all.

Paul,

I'm trying my best to get Gardens.com launched on Friday!

I don't think I understand about the Garden.com site. Is it true that if we post on DG it will appear on Gardens.com automatically or can we choose only to be "seen"on DG?

DFW area, TX(Zone 7b)

Thanks, Ceejay. I've never seen that picture before, and
here I always thought butterflies were beautiful, LOL.
That'll teach me to assume !!! I forgot the Benny Hill rule, LOL.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

LOL Mahnot!! Dave, she's just joshin' ya. Mahnot, what's the Benny Hinn rule?

DFW area, TX(Zone 7b)

Sofonisba, Benny Hill was a very popular British comedian
who had a TV show which was broadcasted on PBS here
years ago.

The Benny Hill Rule is to Never Assume, because

"When you A S S U M E, you make

an A........out of U and M E." Oh, boy ! I'm not sure this is gonna make it,

but you asked for it !

Corrected for spelling.

Okay. Hate to take a different tack, but I'm a refugee from that other site that was destroyed (in my mind, anyway) by corporate mindset, incompetence and greed. Is there a clause for "no changes" in writing in a contract? If so, for how long? What level of subscription fees are we talking about? Sorry, I'm not a trusting soul when it comes to large companies and I can't afford to pay a lot. I want more info! Once burned, twice shy! I've seen it happen to too many sites on the net that used to be cool sites to go to. I could name them off, but it's too depressing! I'll hope for the best...you and Trish are great, but when there's a large corporation involved...well, I'm sorry, I want more reassurances. I want to know that Dave's Garden will not turn into something I don't even recognize later on.

Cochise, AZ(Zone 8b)

Good Job! Dave and all! A job well done deserves compensation! Only one question. Does this mean someone will be offering Mugs Again soon?

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Dave,

Perhaps it's been asked but will your family have to relocate? No more Bryan/CS roundups? I'll be close enough to go to that one if later this year! My blessings. What sweet success!

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Oh yes, my subscription goes out next month (one year anniversary at Dave's for me here - whoo hoo!), how much are the new subscripts?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Dear Dave, Trish & Terry!
What an exciting opportunity!! You go guys!! We will hang in here and cheer you on from the sidelines, and of course do what we have always done here... Support and encourage each other in all our gardening endeavors. I agree, it was just too wonderful to pass up. We know we were y'all's first love, and we always will be. :-D

Now go spread your wings!!
Congratulations!

Linda, you're a gardener, so you know that change is constant
and sometimes it is wonderful. Just look at all the beautiful
things that you are growing in your garden now that hadn't even
been dreamt of years before. Heck, some things even need a
good cold spell before they will produce fruit or flowers.

Dave's just tending to his garden and I'm sure we will all benefit
in the long run.

Don't mean to butt in to your business, Dave. Just my opinion.

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Ceejay, thanks for posting the link. I love the butterfly picture, but that's not the one I had in mind. The one with the plant on his head is never to be forgotten! LOL

Trying to catch up with questions here.

LindaTX8: Please take a wait and see approach. I guarantee that this is going to be a positive experience in the long run. I wouldn't have joined NameMedia if I wasn't completely confident in them. This is NOT going to be like "other sites". New subscription rate will be $25 per year and you can resubscribe right now at the current ($15) rate.

Tir_Na_Nog: Happily, I'm staying in Bryan, TX. Working from here works very well for all of us.

best,
dave

Loveland, CO(Zone 5b)

I trust you, Dave. Keep on making the good decisions for DG that you've always made.

Dave, this big change has me thinking metaphorically of you sending your "kid" (DG) off to college. You're still the final word, really the driving force and the "in charge" guy, but you're trusting the school to help your kid develop new opportunities he didn't have before.

I'm sure Dave wouldn't enroll DG in a school he wasn't comfortable with, and I'm sure he won't let this enrollment degrade the community we already foster here. The point is to continue the DG legacy with new and exciting resources! Yay!

Aw! DG is growing up! :) Great job, DT&T! :)

Oh awesome! Thanks Dave for the answers.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Mahnot,

Oh! You mean Benny Hill! He was terrific, wasn't he? I never knew that quote was his. Thanks!

Good question Grammy. What about t-shirts too? I want my DG t-shirt and mug! LOL

What a nice sentiment Deb.

DUH, yes - :o( I'm a goof. I meant Benny Hill, LOL.
I must be slipping gears here today ! Thanks.

Oh, my gosh ! I always suspected Dave had a sense of humor !

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Thank you scooterbug! Groovy hair Dave! LOL The plant kingdom never ceases to amaze me.

Mahnot, don't worry. My gears slip every day - and I'm only 38!

Harper

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Congratulations! It's a great site. But I do want to object to a 67% increase in subscription rates. I would be just fine with an increase to $20 - especially since you haven't raised them in years, but $25 (and the corresponding exchange on the Canadian $) would probably be enough to make me rethink my membership. I spend far too much time here (and love every minute of it) but would be far more productive if I spent it elsewhere.

Ann

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

That's just a little over $2 a month, about 7 cents a day. For what I get, it's still a bargain!

And Ann, if you have are having trouble with that, click on "Contact Us" at the bottom and let us know about it. We will forward it to Trish who will then bring it before the Garden Angel committee. Whatever that committee decides, we go along with.

dave

Been an enthusiastic subscriber for over two years now and have plugged DG so many times to people I lost count. I have often quoted the motto - 'For gardener, by garderners'. I would always say that the entire operation was grass roots with no one under the thumb of corporate 'minders'. I regret to say that I can no longer say that and I have the same misgivings that Kevin has. I have absolute confidence in Dave and that he truly believes what he says will be the future. However, he no longer has the last word - that's the bottom line. Hope my fears prove unfounded but I have seen this happen many a time. New guy buys out old guy, tells him he loves everything he's done, gives him a title and says "Just do what you do". Some time later, new guy's mind has changed. Hope I'm wrong.

At least you can resubscribe at the old rate still and hang in there and see if you still like it.

Dave,

There has been much said (positive and negative) over the years about your role as a moral compass. Will you continue to be the deciding factor when it comes to admissibility of topic and post content?

Quoting:
Will you continue to be the deciding factor when it comes to admissibility of topic and post content?

That's a very good question! I'm glad you asked.

Yes, definitely, I will continue to be that deciding factor and I'm not going to relax my standards. Profanity, political discussion, religious debate, etc will all continue to be strictly verboten!

It sound like such a wonderful opportunity for you all. I am glad you will be able to stay in TX but I hope you will take the time to enjoy your inevitable visits to Beantown. My DH and I lived in downtown Boston for 18 months and it was like being on vacation. Eventually however, it was time to come home. Wish we could have continued to live here and work there. Good luck and best wishes with your new endeavor.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Dave, my subscription was ending in 35 days, so as a sign of support and because I am a Yankee penny pincher, I have renewed my subscription today. Patti
