cherokee rose

Oak Island, NC

I have just moved into a home with a very old cherokee rose growing (overtaking) a pin oak tree. it has climbed all the way up and is now on the way down what can I do with all the branches that are now on the ground ? I love this bush and would like to see it spread but I have no fence or anything for it to continue to spread on so all the branches are hanging down and going in all directions any ideas . thank you so much for this site. carol wilson

Oh it sound heavenly ! Beautiful ! Do you have a picture ? I guess you could trim it. Could you make some type of trellis or the type that has a bench or swing and goes up and over and lead it to grow there also ? You could sit there and enjoy the beauty ! I'd love to see it.

I wouldn't prune it, as it blooms on the old wood. If you do prune it, it may take awhile to bloom again. I would get a ladder, and very carefully, so as not to get stuck by the thorns, tie it up to the Oak Tree and let it use the tree as a natural trellis! You could always try transplanting it along a fence and tying it to the fence if you don't like it growing up the Oak Tree.

The canes will take root if left to wander on the ground,

If you ever get seeds or rooted cuttings, I would love to make a trade with you!

Cherokee Rose is the State Flower of Georgia. My youngest sister lives in North Georgia and she has a beautiful Cherokee Rose growing along her fence in the back yard!
