Melanie, I found the shot of the B of P up off the road to McDonald Observatory. This is why I love the plant.
Also the link to the Photo Forum with all the images that I got when there.

Gardening with Texas Native Plants & Wildflowers, part 14.
Kipp, those are neat pictures, I remember the discussion we had about the cedar tree with roses on it.
I have some small BOP that I started from seed, and I can bring you one at the Swap.
Josephine.
Beautiful, Kip! Thanks for sharing....... I love that part of Texas too.... :)
Melanie
Melanie, if I could work out a living out there, I'd move in a heartbeat.....maybe less.
lol..me too, kip.......Alpine here I could come! or maybe even Marfa...lol ;)
Melanie
Don't go toward the "lights".................
We went to two native plant nurseries today. The first was Medina Garden Nursery in Medina. It's just so lovely! Take a camera if you ever go there! The weather was just perfect and the gardens were lovely! I was pleasantly surprised to find a Texas Barberry plant there...couldn't resist buying one.

Linda, those Antelope horns plants are just beautiful. I have never seen any with so many flowers.
The nurseries look very pretty, I bet you had a super day!!! Good for you!!!
You deserve it after such a bad Winter and early Spring.
Josephine.
Alright Linda....tell me again where Natives of Texas is!
I finally got my large Eve's Necklace and a Chaparrel Sage, Salvia clevelandii at Rainbow this past Sunday. Can't wait to see what the Eve will do....and the Chap.Sage is so aromatic...the scent just sort of hangs in the air as you walk by it.... lovely.. :) A plant from Ca. but interesting ..... :) I just can't resist any type of Salvia and Sage.
Melanie
Melanie, I found a small 4"pot of S Clevelandii at a local nursery this spring and planted it where I can reach down and brush by it when I walk outside. I agree about the scent. I love it! My husband says it just smells "herbally" to him.Guess that is what different noses can smell. I went back to that nursery to get more, but they were all gone..I have it in the best draining spot in my yard, but I'm worried there may not be enough sun. It seems to be okay so far..
Melanie, the site for the nursery has a little map or something, I believe. I should add that the route from Medina on Hwy. 16 is the "picturesque" route. It also has a section with hairpin turns that gets on my nerves a bit, although I love the scenery.

I've taken that route before, Linda....very lovely, but not for the faint of heart, lol. Thanks for the link... :) My honey and I are off to Gov't Canyon tomorrow for a hike that starts at around 8:30am...I'm pretty happy about that.... :) Definitely bringing my camera for the wildflowers.
I really do love this sage, teacup. The plants at my favorite nursery here in SA are large, at least a foot high...and although I paid 19.99 for it..I think it was well worth it for the scent alone, pungent as it is, sort of like my Copper Canyon Daisys. I planted mine in full sun...which is all that I have anyway. Can't wait to see what it will do...! :)
Melanie
We went hiking up at Gov't Canyon early this morning....and the wildflowers and plants were incredible...! So wonderful to see some of my favorite natives in their natural habitats. :) Mountain laurels and Eve's Necklaces everywhere....cactus with buds about to flower..and a huge amount of different wildflowers. I didn't know what this one was and I didn't see it very much at all..... Just so striking and much taller amidst the 4-nerve daisys and phlox... :)
Melanie
Melanie, the plant you didn't know is Prairie Larkspur, Dephinium carolinianum, a beautiful Spring flower we don't see much of around here, you lucky girl you!!.
Josephine.

Well, glad it is doing well! They're blooming all over the hills around here also. Melanie, those are so pretty! Government Canyon can be so nice in the springtime! I need to get out there also. Just as spring really got going good, my left foot started acting up, otherwise I would've been out hiking somewhere. I hate Plantar fasciitis, it's so painful!
It was just breathtaking out there....and I felt like a child in a candy store. As much as I wanted to take little pieces of this and that for my garden at home, it felt even better leaving things be and knowing someone else would enjoy them. But phew, it was hard! lol... I found this wild Morning Glory sunning itself on a limestone rock.. :)
Melanie
And I couldn't resist this little beauty among the daisys.... :) We saw all sorts of critters today...from a large rattlesnake near the Hdqtr's, to a shy and young horned toad under a prickly pear....to a Texas Alligator lizard on a cedar tree. Even saw a green rough-skinned snake watching me from my huge lavender bush here at home, lol.
Sorry to hear about your foot giving you some problems, Linda. My poor ole toes are tired from climbing limestone all morning....but it was well worth it.
Melanie
Melanie, your first picture looks like Lindhiemer Morning glory, and the second is some kind of senna, don't know which one.
The Butterfly is adorable.
The senna looks like it is the Two-Leaved Senna, Cassia Roemeriana. Actually it has been fairly common in the S.A. area in the past, but it is slowly being edged out by development. Some wildflowers can survive in urban areas better than others. I tried digging one up out at the NW Vista College plant rescue recently, but unfortunately it didn't survive.
Very pretty.... :)
I found the hot pink version growing in the middle of a large group of the normal
light to dark purple Spiderworts on our property....I was so taken by it...I dug it and have been growing it in my garden since. I have the purples growing everywhere and enjoy them as well.....but thought this version was special.....I'm glad you're enjoying it too!
My Lizard's Tail is starting to take off finally....as is the Red Ruellia and BOP from Melanie...and my Lindheimer's MG from Linda is doin' great.....the Yellow LA Iris from Nada bloomed a couple of days ago. Wonderful Spring....I love it!!!
Lee!! You should see the wee Burr Oak that you gave me....It has sprouted about 5 leaves and is slowly growing... (reeeal sloooow) lol... Isn't this time of year just wonderful?! So glad to hear that the Red Ruellia and BOP are growing well... :)
Melanie
Glad to hear it! I failed to mention that the Bauhinia - White Orchid Tree is just now crankin' up! Two new leaves finally popped out.....the winter - cooler weather......kept it dormant for so long.
Josephine....I think you gave me a little Standing Cypress last year too.....it's starting to grow now. Thanks to everyone......again!
I recently acquired a few dozen Herbertia lahue (Prairie Nymphs) from the property of a friend up near Huntsville......we just happen to be in the right place at the right time.....able to see at least a hundred in bloom....which is wonderful....I think they only display their bloom for a few hours....so I
started digging and was delighted to add these to my garden....the picture
isn't particularly attractive....but gives a good representation of the bloom ( a bit tattered from moving)
Absolutely beautiful, Lee......just look at the fine detail of that bloom...so intricate! I received a Standing Cypress at the swap as well...and boy is it growing... It is now to my knees....and I can't wait to see what it will do. Lee, did you give me a Catalpa at the swap? lol..I can't remember...but its growing by leaps and bounds... :) Glad to hear about the Orchid Tree. My two remaining ones have also been slow to grow...but are putting out leaves now. :) You gave me a Coral Honeysuckle as well....and it is winding its way up a lattice as I type...lol :)
Melanie
That is just adorable Lee, such gorgeous shades of blue!!!!
Such happy memories, isin't it grand?
A Grand Blessing indeed, Jo!
Yes, Melanie,....I did bring you a Catalpa....have you seen the blossom of a mature tree? Very unique and beautiful!
I had to leave for a few minutes to investigate what my dogs were agitated-excited about......turns out to be TWO copperheads near the rear patio...probably mating....since they were together....usually find 3-4 each year.
They like to hang close to a outside "light source" (security light or porch light) that attracts June bugs....hence frogs, toads & geckos....and then copperheads.
My parents have a Catalpa that is about 25' tall....huge...and the white blooms on it are beautiful... :)
Wow...copperheads! I haven't seen one but did find a Coral Snake a few weeks ago while mowing the backyard. Just shoo'd him away out of harm's reach and finished my yard work..lol
I'm happy to report that my large Eve's Necklace has some new growth on it! I always worry about transplant shock...but cloudy days and wet weather are helping it along... :)
Melanie
Melanie...I'd much rather have a copperhead in the yard....than a coral snake!
the coral's neurotoxin venom is far more dangerous than the copperhead's venom (hemotoxin I believe)....although the temperment of the coral is usually
somewhat subdued unless provoked....and they kinda hafta bite and hold on to deliver their toxin....whereas the copperhead can deliver it's venom easily as an injection....they're not usually real aggressive either.....but I'm thinkin' about walkin' around in the yard barefoot...or sandals.....at a time when you can't easily see them...and accidentally step on one. Not good either way. I would think that you'd be more likely to come across a rattlesnake than a copperhead in your area.....a different situation compared to the copperhead.
How big is your Eve's Neckace? Lee
Yes, I know Copperheads. When we replaced 70 feet of fence 7 years ago we found 3 nests with somewhere between 10 to 15 in each. Had to extinguish most of them but the birds and the few red tails had a gourmet buffet,
I personally love to come across a hognose and play with it. Reminds me of earlier times.
Here is another view of the white Prairie Larkspur that Josephine so graciously identified for me. :) It really is so pretty...
Lee, my newly acquired Eve's Necklace is about 4' or so. Odd seeing so many of them growing wild in the hill country a mile or 2 from our house. :) It is already happy in my backyard..and providing some much needed shade for the wysteria that you also gave me. We're just going to have to do another swap this year somewhere...I can't make it to the RU in CS...since I have to work...but would love to try again sometime this year. Too many wonderful things to share... :)
Yes....I've seen a baby rattler in my rock garden here in the backyard...and again, I let the little feller go....If I'm going to let my plants grow somewhat wild the way that I do... then they're going to start to feel a little too comfortable to be around....I'll just have to be extra careful...but again, I also have a Cooper's Hawk patroling my small backyard....so I guess balance has to be there somewhere.. :)
Melanie
I know I'll miss meeting ya Melanie and I'm sure all of the other Texas DGers will to.
Next time !!
