Gardening with Texas Native Plants & Wildflowers, part 14.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Mimosa is fragrant but boy does it give you trash!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

?? Wha cha mean, Nada? Trash? Do you mean alot of fuzzy wuzzies on the ground or lots of those tiny leaves? :)

Melanie

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

It seems to me that every plant has some kind of Fuzzy Wuzzies, just check out those wonderful live oaks right about now.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol Josephine, true......... they really seem to enjoy hitchhiking in dog fur...lol ;)
Were my wee yellow flowers Squarebud Primroses or Drummond's Sundrops?
Lots more blooms for me to enjoy!

And I almost forgot, this wee Penstemon is about to bloom as well. I think Josephine gave it to me at the SA swap.......My Big Red Sage is getting ready to show off as well. Don't you just love this time of year? :)

Melanie, I am sorry that I didn't realize you wanted to identify the plant.
I think they are Sundrops, there are a few varieties of them, so I don't know which one of them.
The Square bud primrose actually has a square bud before opening, those are not very common around here so i am not familiar with them.
May be Linda will be able to give you a more accurate answer.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, that is the Brazos Penstemon, Penstemon tenuis, they are so pretty, and almost evergreen too.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

As far as a trashy mimosa, she might be referring to the nonnative kind that is commonly sold. But were you talking about Mimosa borealis, the native one often called Fragrant Mimosa? It's certainly not trashy. I like it! It does have little thorns, however. I've got it a few on my property...just grows naturally here.

Ooh, common names, can be confusing! Both common names seem to be used for Calylophus Drummondianus. I've always called it Squarebud Primrose, but there's several other names.I have two forms of C. Drummondianus, the all-yellow and the other one, the yellow and black one.

Sooo pretty, Linda! Indeed, I was talking about a native Fragrant Mimosa. I carried a nice pot of one around Rainbow Gardens for quite a while until I decided on that Emu bush...but I think I'll go back on Monday and get it afterall. I think it was meant to be, lol. Thanks for that clarification on the C. Drummondianus. Are you going to the plant sale in Boerne, Linda?

Melanie

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, yes, I plan to go. I've already donated some plants to one organization that participates there. I'm thinking about making a big day of it and going by Schumacher's Nursery early, then swinging back toward Boerne. But then I wonder if that's way too much temptation in one day! Hope to see you there.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

ok I was probably talking about the non native. I didn't realize there was a native one.

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8a)

We have about 10 of this beautiful wildflower. I am wondering if this is curvepod fumewort. Thanks,
Carol

Lovely! It looks more like this one, but can't tell for sure from your pic. Look at the pics posted on this link:

Wow...that is gorgeous! I've never seen one of those....

Linda...do you have an Eve's Necklace? Almost got one today....they had some tall ones at Rainbow....but got my native Mimosa afterall.... They had some lovely whitish blooms on them...similar to Mountain Laurel....

Melanie

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Flowerette, I don't think your plant is the Fumewort, although it is not very clear in you picture.
The leaves on the fumewort are very finely divided, check this link; are yours like that?

From your picture it looks more like the baptisia that Linda suggested.
Check them out and see.
Josephine.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Eve's Necklace are lovely, I have some tiny ones that I started from seed, but they are not ready to be given out yet. Maybe by this Fall they will.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Melanie, I don't have that one, but I'd sure like to have one some of these days. The blooms are supposed to be a pale pink. I'll have to go look at their Eve's Necklace plants.
Josephine, were you able to germinate any Brasil seeds? I've got a few coming up now!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Linda, I planted the Brasil but they are not up yet, I hope they make it.
I can save you and Melanie a little Eve's Necklace, if you like.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

That would be wonderful...Josephine..! :) I may end up buying a large one anyway...since I desperately need some shade in the extended part of my back flowerbed...but would love another.. :)

Does anyone else have any Jerusalem Sage coming up? My plant has gotten huge and is putting out some lovely yellow blooms. :)

Melanie

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Mitch gave me some Jerusalem Sage last year and it was so beautiful all winter and had a lot of buds just waiting to burst open with color. This pic was from early March. Maybe by this weekend I will have color. It is in an area that only gets full sun half of the day so it may be slowing it down.
Post a pic of your blooms Melanie.

Pretty...Sheila.. :) I'll have to definitely get some photos of my blooms. They seem to really be popping right now... :) My plant seems quite content in the hottest/sunniest corner of my back yard. I don't have any shade to speak of at all....but it appears to do just fine where it is.. :)

Melanie

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Love it Sheila!!

Get that camera cranked up Mel!...LOL!

Okay, stopped by the side of the road today to take this picture of White Honeysuckle, Lonicera albiflora. Isn't it cute? It's a shrub, but has some kind of viney branches also. Later on, there might be some red berries.

Edited to correct the botanical name....something told me that it was wrong the way I gave it before!

Another view of it. Too bad they're not real common. Of course, as more development of the hill country continues, it's becoming less and less common, I guess.

That is really neat Linda, haven't seen that one around here.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes it's really cute Linda, Bet the fragrance is nice too!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Wow....nice find, Linda...I haven't been lucky enough to see one of those around here... :)

Melanie

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Linda & Josephine, The yellow plant has the same leaf as the Buffalo Pea False Indigo. Should have shown you the leaf and its structure. What a beautiful plant it is!
Carol

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

That is wonderful Carol, I wish I could see it, Have never seen in person, there are so many wonderful wildflower in Texas!
Please stay in touch and show us what other neat plants you have.
Josephine.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

My Bird of Paradise is really showing off right now. Lots more blooms then last year due to the abundant rains. I love their sunny faces and red tongues...lol :)

Melanie, I am just totally jealous ! I fell in love with the tree out in the Davis mountains on Mount Locke.

Kip

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Wow...Kip...I've traveled out that way and was never lucky enough to see one in its native enviroment. That must have been a treat. :)

Melanie

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

That's pretty! Don't you just love spring, when the plants are blooming?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes I love Spring, but with this cold weather the plants are not doing much around here.
Some of the plants from last year haven't come up yet, can you believe it?

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Well, a few of mine haven't returned either...including a Hop Tree I bought at a nursery once...I think it's gone, since all the Hop Trees seem to have leafed out by now. I think some plants were stressed out by the heat and drought last year and just didn't have the strength to get through the winter after that. Anyway, I'm just grateful for how many plants HAVE returned. This pic shows an annual, Texas Dandelion...have always loved this "weed".

These are really blooming a lot in spite of the weather and the little bit of hail we got last night. Squarebud Primrose, just happy about so much rain!

Thumbnail by LindaTX8
Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Those are so pretty Linda, I love the Texas Dandelion too, we have quite a few at the wildscape.
The Squarebud Primrose is adorable too, I love the black center, they really stand out.
Josephine.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, and these bloomed for me the first time. It's Celestials, Nemastylis geminiflora. Most of the time, you wouldn't even notice the grassy-looking leaves. But then when they bloom....you can't take your eyes off them!
