Swap Forum

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Sure does seem to be a lot of interest, I'm sure there would be a large volume of posts if it got going.

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Dave can we please have a swap forum.

(Zone 5b)

I have a few things I'd trade for old fountain pens or pencils.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Count me in, too!

Gang,

Check out Dave's response in the bottom of this link. I think we don't have enough "new" responses to warrant a forum. Scroll to almost the bottom to see Dave's Garden: New Forum Please? "Agastaches & Salvias

Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)

well I think we have enough unique people but maybe we just need to talk more? lol

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I am still interested, and I bet others in DG will want it too .

West Central, FL(Zone 9b)

I think its a great idea especially for those members who are new to gardening and don't have alot of plants yet, but do have some good stuff to trade.
Some plants are hard to find too, especially as the Mom and Pop nurseries become fewer and fewer. It is always great to get a plant from someone in your area who has experience growing it too. All great things for the newer gardening fanatic like myself....who has full closets!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Maybe I am wrong in thinking that there are too many charitable organizations in all our communites to be mailing what "one man calls junk and another a treasure"....there are churches, Ronald McDonald for clothes, Salvation Army, Purple Heart and on and on.....and we leave it for free for someone less fortunate to have. I don't really understand this wanting to give away to DG people rather than local charities. This is just my opinion. After all, this is a plant site created.....every single Sunday in the foyers of any given church there are boxes begging for anything that either can be sold or used.

Gail,
I respect your opinion, but too assume we don't donate to others less fortunate than we are I don't agree. I don't think is it right to make someone feel guilty if they don't donate either.

There is also a church that cost 95 million in Houston, and can you imagine how many people it would cloth, feed or the homes it would build for people less fortunate. WWJD ?

I have a few things like books, African violet pots and some collectables ( knick knacks), garden art I would like to trade for other garden items or plants. Yes this is a garden site, but there are many forums here that have nothing to do with gardening, so should they not be allowed or abolished too?

Yikers, don't go there girls...

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Many of us would love to expand our gardens or improve our yards but can't afford it monetarily. I see no harm in bartering something we longer need for something we do.

(Zone 5b)

Is anyone interested in trading old fountain pens, pencils, etc. for Pretty As A Picture figurines?

(Zone 5b)

This could inspire me to clean out my share of the garage :)

North Augusta, ON

And these things could easy be shipped across the border......

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

i think it can be a lot of fun...sorry, no old fountain pens

this is just a nice "extra" avenue for distrubting items we no longer need or use...it will supplement other things i do

i personally really get a kick out of being able to give to friends and others that share common interests :-)

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I agree ladies. I just hope Dave approves.
Patti

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

fingers crossed!

(Zone 5b)

Have a box of coffee mugs in the garage.

Free but pickup only.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

There was some discussion at the beginning about creating regional swap forums.... Since a lot of potential swap items could be shipped (like fountain pens), I think it sounds like it would be best to have a single, non-regional swap forum. Just like with plant trade offers that are "pickup only," you could post a link in the appropriate regional forum if you post a "pickup only" offer in the swap forum. I'm not suggesting rampant cross-posting, just a post that says "please click this link if you might be interested in [coffee mugs]."

Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)

I suppose that would work.. But I think that folks would need to post their state in the subject heading for pickup onlies.. I didn't think about small things i guess.. Maybe because when we started we were discussing old patio furniture,...lol

Arlington, GA(Zone 8a)

I would love to see a Swap Forum,I lots of old no longer used items that someone else would find useful.

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I suggest for pick up we only publish our address in the Dmail for privacy and safety reasons, but in the title general information. Example : Have: Garden books in SE Houston TX. 77062
I put SE ( south east), because it can be a hour drive to get to one side of Houston to the other side of Houston. If you don't want someone coming to your home have a alternative place for pick up like a grocery store or any other public places.
Patti

(Zone 5b)

Why don't we try posting a couple things here? If we can't get a few swaps going from this thread (or even give away stuff), a dedicated forum probably wouldn't be very active either.

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

We don't want to jump the gun. It is Dave's website and Dave's decision. We are asking for permission for the forum.

If you want to see if there's interest in swapping, why not start a swap thread on your regional forum? If threads on swapping prove pretty active, then that would show enough interest for a separate forum for swaps. Often, new forums are created because there's a lot of traffic on a particular topic on an existing forum.

(Zone 5b)

Jazz was told it was alright to post here to check interest (4th post from top).

If there's not enough activity here, then why would Dave bother dedicating a forum to it.

Take a look at other requests for forums that have been approved. They have lots of activity going on. The requestors of the Agastaches & Salvias forum didn't just place a vote and sit around waiting for permission; they posted! They posted pictures and started conversations, and they proved they could support their request with the activity they created.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

You could also put a "swapping stuff for plants" thread in the plant trading forum, with the "haves" lists being non-plant items people have available, and the "wish" lists being the sort of things they might like in return...

(Zone 5b)

I think you're right about posting on the regional forums too, or if I want to trade collectibles, I could post a link to my request here.

But I think for purposes of this thread to check interest, we should probably try to keep activity going here too.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I've put a "bug" in Dave's ear to consider this request, but I know he's got a lot on his plate right now, so it may be a while before he has a chance to weigh in.

This forum request is a little different than a typical new forum request, because it involves the exchange of goods, not just information. Historically, non-seed or plant trades have been frowned upon, primarily because no one wants to see the forums become a breeding ground for scammers and spammers.

So I would ask that everyone "sit tight" for a bit until Dave gives a green light (or nixes the idea - it's still his call.)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

So, I guess that means no "stuff swap" threads in the plant or regional forums until we get a green light for the general concept.

I've been encouraging people who would like plants/seeds but have nothing to offer in trade because their gardens are so new to get creative with their offers and think of other things that they could offer in return, from seed packets to handmade notecards (both of which I've been offered in trades)... I hope I wasn't stepping over the line; it just made sense to me.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Non-plant/seed for plants or seeds has always been okay, as long as there are plants involved (gardening site and all that ;o) and the trader wants to trade for seed packets, notecards, garden books, etc.

But just out-and-out trading/bartering/exchanging of anything/everything needs to be carefully considered before we give the go-ahead.

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Terry can you also ask Dave if we can have a place on our trade list for these items.ex. books, notecards.etc.
Thanks,
Patti

By popular request, here's the new Swaps and Trades forum: http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/swaps/all/
