What Colors?

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

What colors are attracting you that never did before?

I'm drawn to the corals and soft tropical colors this year. I don't have a lot of white, but I'm looking at it more too.

Rosemont, ON(Zone 4a)

I've always liked yellow/purple/orange/red color combinations, and this year I'm planning a flowerbed of pale yellow/maroon/blue/peach tones. However, my color scheme ideas never last any longer than the first trip to the garden center. I bring home whatever catches my eye, which is usually something pink that causes severe visual indigestion.

Laughing! Me too! My favorite penstemon had no name and is the color of Peptol Bismal! It mixes only with the bright yellow primrose Oenothera fructosa. I've had both since 1992 and even named it Peptol Bismal in my plant journal.

I like your idea for this year.

I saw another DGer mentioned a "moon" bed of white foliage and blooms. That does sound pretty. How is that for common!

what's on my mind these days is planting a peach/orange rose with a light blue clematis, as Jeanne has done. Can't get that pic out of my mind!

That rose and clematis combination sounds lovely, Vossner. Any particular varieties in mind?

I am going to try red/white/blue with phlox. I have never grown phlox before so I am excited about this.
purple and yellow have always been favorites of mine. (My house is yellow and my front door, and house numbers are in purple)
I also want to plant in waves of color this year. Different plants all in the same shade, broken into blocks, not sure how I am going to do this but it is a thought.

Blue is a rarity in my garden. I have tons of pink, yellow and purple, but almost no blue. Very frustrating for me. My garden is well established, takes little water or care, so new plants have to fight for space and many bulbs struggle by being shaded by more aggressive evergreen neighbors.

Glads are a bulb that is an incredible weed around my garden. Pull it out, and dozens of tiny bulblets fall off on the way to the compost bin, eventually sprouting themselves in various places they weren't meant to be. So I decided if you can't beat 'em, join 'em -- I ordered 2 dozen blue glad bulbs from Park Seeds last week!

Podster, I've always wanted a white bed, but never made one.

Vossner, gorgeous link!

I love Phlox. Sounds like a vibrant color combination. It will be fun trying to figure out what to plant where.

I love blue and went on a quest a few years ago. My favorite is the Balloon Flower - Komach. (Platycodon.) Laughing over the Glads!!

I have some glads that are lavender with yellow centers. I didn't care much for them at first, but really like them now.

I've had things grow on me too. Like the yellow daylily with the maroon center. I didn't like it till I saw it from a distance. Now I wouldn't part with it.

Phoenix, AZ

I like all colors of flowers except PURPLE.............. JUST KIDDING!!!! My fav.!
Fuchsia, Daphne, purple iris, petunias
I really don't like rust colored flowers though I like rust colored foliage plants .... and so on.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Rust in the description turns me off too. I 'm sure there are some pretty ones, but I imagine the color and don't buy.

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I started my gardens on a clean slate, and in the front it's yellow through apricot to pink roses, with some purple here and there. Out back it's going to be a riot of color if I can make it happen. Mostly roses, but I have to have a wisteria over to the side where there is NOTHING growing but SA grass. Gotta get that arbor built.

I love Jeanne's combination of rose and clematis, too. I have an arbor with a pink rose on one side (Zephirine Drouhin) and yellow on the other (Golden Showers) and if one doesn't make it, a clematis will take its place.

Sounds beautiful! The one color combo that I've always liked are pink and yellow. Mom had a pretty hybrid tea rose when I was little. The only one I remember.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

I like orange and purple. Pink with red. These are some of my best new color combos.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

ROTFL!!! My bedroom at home has orange baseboards and a purple door. No-one has repainted it yet.

I could go for red and pink.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Jeri and Billyporter ~ those sound like "school colors" LOL! I will wait till I see photos that you post and pass judgement then. : )) pod

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Well, Mom wouldn't let me paint my room black! I had to go for the next outragous thing. We must have gotten sick of it ourselves because we never finished with the orange.

I'd like to see the color combo pictures too!

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Here is a good example of pink & red. I just loved it this year.

I haven't done real well with my orange and purple combination. They didn't bloom at the same time. LOL

That is gorgeous! I love caladiums. I would have to dig them in the fall and have no basement for storage. They go well with the roses!
