lol we cross posted rofl
CLOSED: St. Patrick's Day Seed Swap
I'm having a terrible time finding a St. Patrick's Day fun gift to send along with my seeds! Anyone have any clever or creative ideas? I think my brain has fallen prey to the flu gods (or devils). LOL It's been going around bad here and as always, my family gets it! UGH.
I've looked at the dollar stores, WM, Target, etc.......with no luck finding a gift item. Everything is either Valentine's Day or Easter! Sort of like how Thanksgiving is treated - - - completely left out of the marketing departments heads, I think. Ironically, living in DUBLIN - - - an Irish named town with Shamrock and clover stuff everywhere, you would think I could find a gift. Not the case just yet, things are done a LOT slower around here so maybe once it gets a bit closer to March I can find something. lololololol
All of you have a great day,
Belinda :-)
p.s. I must send you guys a pic of our first SNOW of the year!!!!!!!! A very unusual site for us!
Oh my even Texas got more than I did here in the lower part of Michigan :(
Connie
I think it's just a little bit too early for St. Patrick's Day stuff. Nobody had anything here either. I've just been looking for things more along the lines of "green" and "garden." I figure as long as it has some green on it, it qualifies. LOL
Look at all that snow! The only time I've ever seen Texas, we flew into Dallas coming and going to Calfornia to visit our daughter when she lived out there. Needless to say I didn't see much of Dallas other than from the air as we were landing, but the ground was covered with snow.
I found some shamrocks and green leaves at wally world but you are right, they have everything out for Valentine's Day now, next month they will have more for St. Patrick's Day.
No, it doesn't snow in Texas! I've never heard of any snow in Texas lol Belinda, you want me to send you my snow board? lol We had a dusting of snow that started about 4 in the morning, it was beautiful, gone this morning.
I found a bunch of things at the Dollar Store. They had a cool section of St. Patrick's Day items
Susan
=^..^=
Our Dollar store had nothing for St. Pats except for some decorations such as cardboard shamrocks. I didn't want to give anyone decorations. I imagine they'll get more in here later. Right now it's all Valentines and Easter stuff.
Our Dollar Store said they wouldn't have anything for at least another couple of weeks and that was last week... I did find some stickers at our local craft store tho.
Well I just got thru making 21 paper pots, I am going to so my poppy seeds in those, that way I can just plant the whole thing :o)
Well got to start supper so will be back in a little while,
Connie
I am glad to hear that you guys think it might be a bit early to find any St. Patty stuff. I will dig out my patience (not one of my better virtues, LOL) and wait a couple of weeks.
LeBug ~ send that snowboard, girl and I'll put it to good use! :-) We don't even OWN any snow equipment, we always rent when we go skiing every year!!!!! I never dreamed I might be able to use my own board right here at home and we have a really neat LONG hill that would be perfect!
Connie ~ On your paper pots, do you have that little tool to make your own easily? Or do you just shape them and call it good? I was thinking of making several next week for my hibiscus seedlings, but I was unsure of the best way to go about it.
One last question for my fellow seed growers.............I am looking for a seedling heat mat, but I am not having any luck of finding any that are not in excess of $29.95 for just the mat! Yikes, that it too much for my small gardening budget. If any of you have any ideas or thoughts about heat mats, will you please let me know. Thanks so much!
Off to start supper, finish up my laundry and be back in a bit!
ttfn,
Belinda :-)
Belinda, no I don't have anything special to make mine, I just took the top off of my blank cds container and made them. I wnated them bigger than glass size, and it didn't take as long as I thought it would. :o) I made them while I was watching one of my shows :o)
Well got to get dinner dishes done and get things out of the way so I can start these pots...
Connie
Thanks for the info, Connie. I think I may get DH to make me a template out of wood (so I can get the diameter the size I am wanting) and get busy myself! :) I am always looking for things to keep me busy during my TV time and that would fit the ticket.
Belinda :-)
This site is closing for good but it might be helpful for future swap themes and you crafty types=D

Connie, I am fairly new to seed collecting and trading (haven't got my trade lists set up yet!) and I've been lurking around this forum for a couple of weeks. I think I might like to join this seed swap if there is still room, but I am dmailing you with some questions... Thanks, Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth, there are 3 openings left and you are more than welcome to join. I will wait for your dmail...
Well all I got some more Winter Sowing done today, gonna go and take a nice HOT bath and relax, it is sooo blasted cold out side, thought I'd freeze my tush off taking those jugs and pots out lol...
Well gonna say good night for now, may check back in later...
If not you all have a great night/day
Connie
OK, I think I can figure out how to do this... but keep in mind everyone I am a newbie. Add me to the list!
Welcome aboard Elizabeth :o)
You will find a bunch of fun loving ppl here in the swap and at DG..
ok there are 2 spots still open
Niters all, I am heading to bed.
Connie
Hello, Lizren, you'll have fun getting cute little decorated seed packets from so many of your new friends.
Deborah
Instead of buying a heat mat for seed starting, I convinced my DH to try our electric roaster (WalMart cheapo). I tested it by placing a cup of water and thermometer inside and marked the spot on the dial to maintain the 85 degree temp he wanted for starting peppers. The pepper plants popped up in one week! I moved them to light and all is well. Of course, the roaster will only hold eight six packs at a time. But that's a lotta peppers!
Just checking up :o)
How are all you coming along with your decorations???
Mine are coming along ok.
Connie
I'm doing OK. I've got to pick up some envelopes to decorate but I've found a few little shamrocky things. I'm actually trying to aquire some more seeds so I have some new varieties for ya'll (and me:LOL:) I actually just mailed out the package for Sheran's Valentines one so I can focus on this exclusively=D

http://www.alenkasprintables.com/seed_packets.shtml this site includes some that are editable to add your own text
If you have Microsoft Word, this template (see the download link on this page) can be edited in Word to add your own text and pictures. This makes a very large packet. You can edit the size down but you have to work at it a bit to keep the right proportions. Once you have it the right size, you can copy and paste more than one to a page to print more than one at a time.

I'll get there. I'm still trying to get the Valentine's swap in the mail. Good weather the last few weeks has sent me outside to help DH at the ranch. The days are way too short!
Thank you Hart! I had been purchasing these cute white thin parchment like ones from the wedding section at Walmart but I've cleaned them out in the last couple of weeks:LOL: Very helpful=)
Connie,
So sorry, for the late reply. Count me in. I just wanted to make sure I had enough time to get my seed pack together. I just finished up a Valentines swap.
I can have my seeds in by March 1. thats plenty of time! So Yes, Please count me in if I still can.- Kathryn
This will be so fun! I am half Irish by the Way- GO IRISH!!!!
Welcome a board Kat :o)
Okay just one more spot to fill....
Wonder who it will be.
We are finally getting SNOW... looks like we are going to get more than a dusting this time. You all may think I am nuts, but I have to have a good hard snow at least once a year lol. perferrably for christmas but we can't have everything... Here is a picture that shows the WSing I have done so far, it was taken yesterday, and at the bottom of that pic, is what I woke up to this morning, had to get a picture of it lol (I copied and pasted them together)
Connie
Wow! Nice snow! And Wow! lots of WS:LOL: What is in the larger containers in the upper lefthand corner? I'm nosy=D
That's a bunch of jugs Connie! What are you using for the domes on your baskets? Are you planting your baskets that way or is it just seeds? I only have ten so far, weather is just to unpredictable.
It's 10 this morning with a dusting of snow Brrrrrrrrrr
I put poppies in the paper pots, and as far as the rest, I couldn't tell you right off lol :o)
D that isn't even half of my WSing. I still have that and more to do yet.
I have everything labeled and still have to enter them in my desktop journal.
I some ppl think I am crazy for doing sooo many, but I have like 9 beds here at home to start in the spring and the one at church. Plus I plan on giving some to my neighbor. We swapped seeds back and forth as they came in from our plants... It's really nice to have a neighbor who is interested in fixing up their yard. The ppl that lived there before well we won't go there lol
At least with our new neighbors, I don't have to worry about rats....
The snow is still coming down :o) I am just glad i don't have to get out in it....
But I love watching it come down and then I like to just watch everything glitter & sparkle ;-}
Connie
I have Lobelia (sp?) in the 2 hanging pots that will stay in them. I have wire and plastic covering the seeds, also in the 16/20 oz cups.... the paper pots aren't covered, notmartha said she throws her poppy seeds on top of the snow so I figured I didn't need to cover them. And when my garden spot is ready I will put the whole paper pot in the ground ;-}
The snow is pretty coming down, I love to watch it!
I never thought about putting my poppies in paper pots, that'll work, think I'll try that.
Are the people at church going to make the beds for you and then you plant them, someone on here told me they heard on the radio that this is suppose to be the hotest summer on record this year, they heard it on the radio, I hope that weather man is wrong, I hope you get all those plants in the ground before it gets too hot for you! I have a lot of beds to plant this year too.
There is only one bed going in at the church and that will be the full length of the church on the side where we park, here is a picture of where the bed is going, http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=3092631 The youth group is going to WS one full or half gallon jug each, but that is all they will be doing, When it comes time to plant, me and one other lady (besides my DH) will be planting the flowers. DH is going to till what he can, and we are having soil hauled in to fill that area. it's about 5/6 inches deep right now... Once the plants are in, we will mulch. There will also be 4 or 5 Big Pots along that area, with the flowers going between each. We want to put mostly perennials in. I will be purchasing some bigger plants for the Pots. The only thing the Church will be paying for is the soil, pots and mulch... So I am hoping I don't kill all these seeds I am WSing rofl... Donna and I (the other lady that is helping me with the church bed) are really excited about this... We have a big tree in the Church yard, and not sure yet, but may plant some Impatients (sp?) there.
I have to go and get more potting mix tomorrow, so I can finish this WSing up. It sure doesn't take long to go thru the bags of soil lol (I have saved some of the seeds, just incase they don't servive my first time WSing :o)...
The rest of the beds I was referring to are going in my back yard, and a shade garden at the east side of my house that will tie into the front, since dh decided he wants to redo the front...
I have my work cut out for me, and will be very very busy this spring and summer... Who would have ever thunk (lol) that I would be into gardening ;o) My friends sure can't get over it lol
Connie
That's a big bed for the church, I'm sure the kids will be very proud, that's a great thing you're doing for the kids too, they'll be wanting to plant more next year after they see their results this summer!
You're going to be a busy girl this summer!
Just bumping this in case someone wants to get in before the deadline.
All-rightie-then! (my DS 's saying) Now if I can just write my check and put it in the envelop folks will be getting the luck of the Irish colored flower seeds! Let's see, how about some Bells of Ireland, zinnia Envy, Rudbeckia Green Wizard, and for good measure since Easter is close, Easter Egg Plant and Poached egg Plant and others? By writing this, it may encourage me to go ahead and put it in the mailbox!
My WM does not have St Patrick's Day themed stickers and such yet. May need to make a trip to Hobby Lobby or Michael's. These swaps are fun!
Deborah♥
Thanks Hart and Deb for the bump up.
Sorry I haven't been around much, but I have got that bug that's going around, it got a hold of me this past week end and doesn't want to let go. Don't know how much I will be on here today either. The glare off the monitor is really murder on the eyes...
Deb the easter egg plant sounds interesting :o) Will have to check out our local nursary in a couple months... I was looking at Green Mountain Transplants web site a few days ago. Thinking about putting an order in there and having them ship it to me in May... Their prices aren't bad at all.
There is one spot left to fill, if no one takes it by Monday Feb 5th, I will close this Tuesday morning and you all can list your extra seeds if you have any to list then.

Connie
