between a cutting and a slip? thanks!

Maybe you will get some other opinions but I'm thinking they're the same. Older gals ( my Mom ) used to call cuttings ~ slips.

Isn't a slip where you shave down the cut to fit in a graft, kinda like an arrow?

San Francisco Bay Ar, CA(Zone 9b)

I've seen sweet potato starts called slips. Does this mean they were shaved?

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

jeri, that's why i thought they might be called slips, but since i started this thread, i looked it up on the glossary and those who gave definitions said they were the same thing. i still don't know. podster may be right, a slip is just an old-time way of saying cutting.

i think a shaved potato would be hash browns.

A cutting is a piece of plant used for propagation, a slip is what you have on an icy morning

:-)

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

There you have it! : ))

The terms are used pretty much interchangeable, but technically a cutting is just that. A piece of the plant is cut off and usually rooted to grow a new plant. Slips are used for things like sweet potatoes, where the young plants grow from a root or tuber and are pulled off and planted. No cutting or rooting required. In grafting, usually hard wood is used and the cuttings are called scions.

thank you farmerdill! i finally understand it.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Excellent explanation Thank you FarmerDill ~ would you mind posting your clarification in the glossary? I know this won't be the only time this question arises. pod

Just came across this thread.

In my world a 'slip' was always a ladies undergarment!.

San Francisco Bay Ar, CA(Zone 9b)

Does that mean a sweet potato slip is what gives women their curves?

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Are we hungry yet?

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

always and forever, but right now, i'm covering plants in the event of a freeze. i will be famished after that. shoot, i'm famished now!.........back to work!

Weston, WV(Zone 6b)

I to believe that a cutting is a slip. My job is taking care of elder folks and when i admire a houseplant they have they always say to me ... "Just take a slip of it home!" So i take a cutting of it and head out the door when my job of the day is done!!

Its cute though all the ol sayings like Slip! I will have to see how many more i can think of!!

Slips as in what a woman wears under her dress isnt even called that anymore its undergarments, delicates or lingerie !....lol

Or how bout blouse, which is shirt or t-shirt now!
Or slacks, which are jeans, khakis or pants now!!

See how the international language evolves!! Love it!
