Glad you are buying philos, pick out some I don't have. So you can send me some when you have starts. HAHHAHAHAHA

(Zone 1)

Sounds like Sharon has a plan ......... hmmmmm :)

Livermore, KY(Zone 6a)

always. I have to have more philos.......................addicted..............

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

There are so many I want now I don't know where to begin. So many pretty ones.I will probably have a room full in no time.. so I should have plenty to share!! LOL

(Zone 1)

Know whatcha mean about so many you want. I was looking at a Tropical Website that Nan directed me to. E-Mailed the guy in Miami as to the availability and price of a couple .... prices were a bit high for me. 'Pink Lady' 10" pot was $45, 'Illsemanii' 10" pot was $30 and 'X Florida aurea variegated' in a 6" pot was $25 .... plus shipping on top of those prices. I decided to wait ..... although it's hard not to just go ahead and order. They are Beautiful Philo's!! I think I will ask DH for one or maybe 2 for my Birthday this year! He never knows what to get me anyway, he'd probably love it if I ordered for myself ... we've both done that many times in the past! Works for Me. :)

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

So 1ST & 2ND prizes are gone correct?

(Zone 1)

Yeah ... I believe there have been just 2 calling Bingo so far today .... so, there are three calls left and two more prizes, 3rd & 4th place!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Actually, Lin...for those particular Philos (variegated, non-typical) in those pot sizes those aren't bad prices.
Though I agree, they sound like a lot - you're bound to pay more than that for plants that size from someone else.
Rooted cuttings of the Pink Lady/Pink Princess on ebay often go for more than $25.00.

Just my $.02!

Something I'll often do is enter the coveted plant's name in Google with the word PRICE behind it (example: Pink Princess plant price) and often get a lot of hits with different prices.

Who knows though...if you try that you might come up with a killer deal!

(Zone 1)

Thanks Nan .... never knew to try that. Are those particular Philo's considered rare? Or is that just the "normal" price, do you think?

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

WOW I never realized how expensive some philos are. But oh they are so beautiful! I would love to get a Burle Marx . I just adore that one. That will probably run way out of my price range though.

I like Lins idea of asking her hubby for a few for her birthday. What a great gift that would be! : )

Livermore, KY(Zone 6a)

Lin, occasionally some have found the Pink Princess at Home Depot. My first one came from a lady in NH who bought it and mailed to me with shippping total was $17, It died and an trader sent me one last fall that has so far done ok.

I would love to have the var spilt leaf as well as others, however the price gets me. I think of things the kids need that cost that much I have put off and then shake my head and say no. That is why I am still without a var spilt leaf to.

I was thinking the same thing about my BDay and Vday coming up. Let hubby buy me a plant I really like.

At Christmas we were at Walmart and my youngest son, said mom can you show me and bubba a few plants you dont have, I know he was going to get one. I had them all, So he called mamaw and her pick me up something else. How sweet, they complain yet were going to buy me another one. Love those boys.

Livermore, KY(Zone 6a)

Actually three gifts left. We have a total of five.

Cedarnest a burle marx is $5.95 on ebay right now. The sellar has a few for that I would like to have. I was thinking for that for Vday.

Well it was did you buy it. I was going to post the link and its gone.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

It's pretty much normal for now, anyway.
In a few years when they become more common, the prices will come down.....they already have, actually!

They're not as 'rare' as they were just a few years ago, but I think the main thing is they're such slow growers, therefore difficult to propagate (especially 'in bulk').

I've bought a few different plants from Steve over the years, and I've never been disappointed.
So the way I looked at a purchase from him was that I was getting a quality good sized plant.

Edited as I forgot to mention one important part of the price equation:
It's likely that when most of these sellers bought their philos (a few years back, if they're propagating them now) they likely paid *hundreds* of dollars for them.....really!
Can't imagine that myself...but if some people are able to do so, more power to them, I guess!

There you go...ask the DH for some for your birthday! Maybe you could research a few great nurseries and make a road trip out of it!!

My DH bought me a Philo for my birthday in September (the greenhouse in town, which never has *anything*, actually had one!!!).....I was ecstatic!! He did good!
