At the Suncoast Seabird Santuary at FL in January.
Blue Heron
Great pictures Marilynbeth. I have heard that a Heron will not land where another Heron has staked out a pond, etc. (mating season is surely an exception!) ...I am not sure how true that is, but maybe that is why people have the heron statues? In your pictures they seem to be alone.
The green coloring around his eyes is cool looking.

Goodness! I had absolutely no idea there were so many different kinds of herons. Of course, at my first sighting of the blue heron in our field, i squealed, "Oh my gosh! There's a pelican in the yard!"
On another occasion, I ran to get the camera, certain i'd spotted what was either a family of partridge or quail. Upon forwarding one of the photographs to a friend, i learned it was neither of those two things ... they were, in fact, chickens escaped from a neighbor's coop.
It's sad, isn't it? :) But we live and learn ....
ROFLMBO!!! Thanks for the laugh, sorry it was at your expense estreya!! But that was too funny!!

If ya look back at any of my goofs you'd be real proud of yourself..LOL!
Hi folks. when I took this pic in the fall, I called it 'Ebony & Ivory'. It's a great blue heron and a great egret. The great blue heron are here all season long on our little lake. the great egret was just passing thru migrating. the pair of them spent some time together off and on for about a week. it's my understanding that various types of herons will form a flock together.
I don't have the spectacular photography that some of you have. need more practice and probably a better camera :0)
linthicum, I'd never seen a green heron either. they're very pretty. this particular great blue was a really big one. spectacular!
