Blue Heron

Ridgefield, WA

I've only seen this bird in my rear field a scant few times, so the sightings are particularly exciting.

We got this shot when he was trying to feed on our and our neighbor's Koi ponds. At that time we were having a sever drought and the lake feeding areas were disrupted. They are huge beautiful birds, but hope they find a less expensive food next time. LOL!

Wow, you two! I see Blue Herons all the time around here, but have never managed a good shot of them. Great job!

Never knew there was a blue Heron. Neat!!!! We have white one s here. At least I think they Heron. They not only are down around the State park, but you can see them taking a walk in cow fields behind the cows.

Love this new forum. Course no housework is getting down. LOL

Quoting:
Never knew there was a blue Heron

The full name is Great Blue Heron (so as to distinguish it from Little Blue Heron)

Beautiful bird! They frequently visit the pond near our house, but so far, no luck getting them to pose. :)

This is a photo of the Little Blue Heron taken back in September.

starlight 1153, it's most likely that the white birds that you see in the field are Cattle Egrets. There is also a Great Egret, Snowy Egret and a Great White Heron but they are larger than the Cattle Egret.

Where do the Little Blue Herons hang out? I think out here in the Pacific Northwest we only get the Greats. Looks like the Littles have a lot more blue?

Here's a "Great" from this past autumn.

Murmur, you're correct in that they would be considered rare in the west. They're found more in the Southeast U.S.
I live close to their northern-most range along the east coast and usually see them around ponds, marsh, etc. but they are not very prevalent in my area.

This is the Snowy Egret ... taken the same day as the Little Blue Heron.

Here's a little green heron. First I'd ever seen round here. He kept hopping away from me so I could never get quite close enough. :) If anyone has a better shot of one of these, please post!

Alright. What I thought all this time was a White Heron is in actuality a Egrit. I love watchign the birds, but other than a few can not identify them. I have plant books, tree books , bug books, guess I need to get a bird book now.

Thanks for setting me right. Love both the Blue and the White.

It's absolutely thrilling to see these photos - I'm impressed with the photography skills I'm seeing, too.

Here is a Black-crowned Night Heron that frequent our area. I generally see them toward dusk so I'm hoping to get a better photo in the future (in brighter light).

I LOVE these heron shots! Raptors and water birds are the two types I know the least about so this forum is really going to help me out!

Cool lighting effect and the reflection is super clear. That is what they do best creep into the water's edge and strike.

It looks like layout for a wildlife magazine for sure, great work. Do you do that for a living? You should if you don't.
