Funny! ;o) Is it near Houston?
Where Am I? - Part 8
It is considerably closer to Houston than you are. ;-) It is in Texas. I suppose that makes it in the south, huh? I've lived here for 8 years, but I'm not used to saying that I live in the south yet... It still surprises me that the Mississippi River is EAST! That's just not right... LOL

Nope... farther south. :-)
Marylyn, how about Tyler?too? :D
Getting warmer, but still pretty cool.
(and LOL, Joey!)
Big Spring? (nothin' like Big Valley)
Austin is the closest guess so far, and it's actually pretty warmish.
Spicewood?
Ooo.. Spicewood sounds like a nice place to be in the fall when the fireplaces start up, doesn't it? That's the wrong side of Austin, though. Go east, young.. umm.. woman. ;-) Austin was closer than San Antonio.
Too far. Go back. LOL
That's too far south. :-)

Is it on the Colorado River (of Texas, not of Grand Canyon fame)?
Ok, this "young" :D woman guesses Brenham!
Figures Texas would have its own Colorado River.
It is not the Colorado River (LOL, Blooms!) It is not Brenham (home of the 3rd best ice cream I've ever eaten), but that is getting closer.
How about Bryan?
That's it, Joey! Home of our illustrious leader, Dave. (Actually I think he lives just outside of College Station, but the two towns are more or less attached.)
Here's the topo map showing the airport. It's VERY small! It's the Texas A&M Flight Test Airstrip.

Here's a Google map showing the same thing: http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=+lat%3D30.633612,+lon%3D-96.483612&ie=UTF8&z=12&ll=30.617528,-96.414642&spn=0.207116,0.314484&t=h&om=1
Oh, and that is the Brazos River going by. :-)

I had no idea there are so many rivers in Texas. Lots of airports, too.
Gee! I just got Lucky. :D I was looking for curvey creeks, etc. And I'm like Claypa (keep thinkin' claypot ;) & had no Idea there was some much inland water. (too many Westerns)
Joey
All of those Westerns took place much farther west in Texas. The "real" West doesn't start until you get past Fort Worth - or so all of their billboards tell you. LOL
Uh oh... I fear That Viburnum Valley might pick up claypot and run with it - they spoof people's user names in the Trees and Shrubs forum... and there's only so many 'V' words...
LOL! Oooops! Well, "Claypot"! I have a bad habit of giving folks nicknames..... :D
Marylyn, LOL! I thought that anything west of the Miss. was "west". My uncle lives in Newton KS & I think that is west....so I guess that's Not the "real" west?
Well, Fort Worth would say no. LOL This feels West to me, but my husband says that it is actually the last stagecoach stop in the "Deep South." He's a native Houstonian, so I guess he should know. :-) Houston is SO big and SO international, that it doesn't feel or sound like the South to me. Very few people have a southern drawl - and if they do they aren't from here.
One last bit of trivia.. Texas is BIG! It is 816 miles from Texarkana, on the Arkansas border, to El Paso, in the far west corner of Texas. It is 873 miles from Texarkana to my old apartment in Columbus, Ohio. Only a 57 mile difference.
That's a Republic. LOL When the Republic of Texas signed the agreement to join the USA, they left an escape clause in, so they could leave again if they didn't like it. They haven't forgotten that! LOL The Texas flag is the only state flag that is allowed to fly at the same height as the American flag when they fly together, because it was originally a separate country.
Most westerns were filmed in southern California or Arizona - not places well known for water. Some where filmed not all that far from where I live.
CA was (or attempted to be) an independent country and that lasted for about 30 days but that's why the CA flag says "California Republic" on it. I don't think any other country recognized CA as a country. I doubt that most Californians even know this unless they teach it in school.
To me, the west doesn't start until you get into the foothills of the Rockies. I think of Texas as being more southern than western until you get west of Odessa. (This is from someone who has only ever been in the extreme west fof TX.) DH is from El Paso and he says that the rest of TX ignores El Paso (but he is highly sensitive to being slighted).
Here's a bit of Calf trivia for you Kelli. I found out about this through the Marlboro "Outwit the West" trivia contest.
Ever heard of the "Republic of Rough and Ready"?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Republic_of_Rough_and_Ready
mg
Yes, and I think we went through that town once.
Another independent republic factoid: Vermont was an independent republic from 1777 to 1791, when it became a state. They fought on the colonial side during the Revolution
Kool! We're on the History Channel! :D
Kelli, thanx again for this thread. I am really enjoying it! :D
And you said..."Fun - I Hope". It's been more fun than a barrel of monkeys! :D
Joey
Ready for another picture? (Anyone on dial-up, let me know when the thread is getting too long.)
We're ready! Are you feeling better, Kelli?
