WOOHOOO (yelled in a high pitched voice with lots of gusto)

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Tonight is definitely a night to celebrate! The longest of the year, and therefore the turning point.

HAPPY YULE, everyone!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I've got my yellow wood, brown wood and white wood. Just hope the rain stays away long enough for me to light my winter soltice fire tonight!

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I'll have mine right in the middle of my soon-to-be-herb garden!
Hope this is the right picture... it looks better now....

Yayyyyy - longer days, come on over!

X, what's the story with the yellow, brown and white wood?

Mary

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes X ~ the significance of the different woods is a tradition I wasn't familiar with... please enlighten us. Maybe too late for this year but there will be next year to celebrate too...

Anyone beside Brigidlily going to have a fire in a garden spot? It will help the soil. A pasture down the road from us had an accidental fire last week and it is amazing to see the bright green new grass popping up in one week.

Another bloom to warm the "soul"stice...

and a white one to help bring on those long days!!!

and THAT is gorgeous! I'll bet it glows in the garden after dark too! That is the Hibiscus coccineus (Texas star) in white? I have never seen a white one before.

Forget the wood, I'll celebrate with a drink!

What a neat link Shirley1md directed us to when she said "wintersowing is a wonderful way to celebrate the winter solstice. It may give you some ideas. It has tons of information, step-by-step pictures, creative & fun quizzes and updated 'stuff' all the time! Do read and re-read this website....you need to read it MORE than once! :~)"

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Well Betterbloom, the wood is useless tonight. It is soaking wet ~ forget the wood it right! Celebrate as we see fit!

I would like to try a seed or two on that one, thanks. Dmail is on the way. : ))

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

My ancestry is Celtic and tradition is to burn wood on the Summer and Winter Solstice the color of the caskets my loved ones were buried in. Along with the burning of the wood I write letters to the departed I miss the most and burn them along with the wood. The tradition goes that the smoke will carry my words to heaven. Every time I burn a letter, I walk around the fire and say You are within and living in my heart, here is my love blowing on the wind, hear me now and walk with me and save me a place under Gods great tree.

I remember as a very little girl doing this with a great aunt many many years ago and ressurected the tradition about 20 years ago. The rest of my family think I'm nuts.

X ~ you need a grand niece to carry on the tradition! What treasured memories. Is the rain holding off there?

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

Podster, please try to remind us of this next year with a little advance notice. It sounds like such a good idea but will take some thinking on my part. Everything I've ever tried to grow from seeds, has died, which is why I do bulbs. I'm not allowed to plant trees here, as I am on the County's Property. And I can't remember ever cooking anything with seeds in it. The only thing I can do at this time is have a bonfire. Maybe next year I can prepare for this and will participate.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Yes thank goodness .. my fire burned beautifully along with the 5 letters I wrote. What I like about this is that it keeps my memories fresh of the people I miss this most. As usual, my neighbors were watching out a window and shaking their heads. After 5 years of watching me do this you think they'd get used to it. LOL.

X ~ too bad they can't join in to celebrate the solstice. Instead do you think they wonder what kind of spells are being cast against them? : ))

Betterbloom, I surely should have started this sooner and could have. This is a day I look forward to with anticipation. When it was soaking wet out, I decided this would be a great way to celebrate the solstice. With kindred spirits, thanks for joining and sympathizing. pod

Happy Solstice to you, Pod! Our 37th anniversary was yesterday...and they said it wouldn't last! You've obviously finished your Xmas shopping! I'm on my way to the mall one last time. I'm still looking for small gifts, have the big ones. With all the things I have to do, I still keep peeking in at DG site. Addiction, I'm afraid.....

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Did anyone else have a really phenomenal sleep last night? Mine was incredible!

San Francisco Bay Ar, CA(Zone 9b)

I had a touch of insomnia, but once I did fall asleep, it was very restful.

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

Now that I am a gardener, I fully understand how agricultural cultures celebrated the solstice and made it such a big deal. I'm looking forward to this upcoming years garden. :)
I'm going to direct sow/winter sow ALL kinds of stuff!!!!!!!!

WHOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Susan

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Susan ~ in zone 7b when and what kind of seeds are you WSing?

Bolivar, TN(Zone 7a)

Thank the good Lord I have a greenhouse to go into when the time until spring seems sooooo long. The older I get, the longer it takes to get thru a winter. Have several different plants blooming right now and it lifts my heart and soul to see them. The rest are green and healthy. Soon I will be starting seeds for tomatoes, etc. All my cuttings I took in autumn are doing well. Am looking forward to spring. Can't get here soon enough for me. I get tired of winter in a hurry. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL AND GOOD GARDENING. LIZ

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I commented as we were coming home from work tonight that the sky was already lighter (the cloud cover was gone) : )) but tomorrow is 11 seconds longer than today was. It will come quickly and I agree not soon enough!
Thanks for the New Years Greeting Liz ~ Happy New Year to you and yours.

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I know what y'all mean, but oh, how I dread 8 months of summer here! If it would only stay spring until June, I think I could handle it just fine. Last year summer started in March -- and I do mean SUMMER.

Ah, well. It's good for the daylilies.

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

Hey Podster... How much time do you have to read my list!! :) Well.. I'm going to do zinnias for sure and marigolds and I have to go through all my seeds to see. I WS'ed too many in pots last year and some are still sitting there!! :)

Susan

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

Speaking of daylillies.... I have a few popping up. Scary. I guess they are tough as nails though and will return even after they get zapped again.

Susan

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Susan do you have a journal or have them listed somewhere? The daylilies here are putting on new growth and seem to shake off frost/ice. The narcissus and daffodils here are sending up buds... hooray. And tomorrow is 17 seconds longer than today was!

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

Podster.. If you read my bio, you will see that I am the queen of Dumpster diving.. I also dig plants that are about to be bulldozed, and the ones that are named are just planted in with the rest.. and the tag is wrapped around them underground. I know some gardeners couldn't imagine doing that, but I just garden for the pretty spending as little on plants as possible. :)
