I have a Canna Lily on the deck in a 3 gal. pot and will need to bring it in this fall (zone 6). Do I need to put it in the garage or will it survive the winter in my sunny livingroom as a house plant?
Any advice?
Jen
Canna Lily question
I dig mine after the frost kills the foilage. Store them in a cool place (the basement)
In the spring you can divide then you will get maybe 5-10 bulbs from your original. Cut them apart leave 1-2 eyes in each division. Plant eack division for a new plant.

If you put it indoors as a house plant it will need a lot of light, but yes if it kept watered it can be kept indoors for winter, but winter storage is another option should it get to big.
Thanks for the replies.
If I store it do I clean the dirt off or store it dirt and all? May sound dumb but I have always shied away from anything that can't stand the winter in the garden.

Thats why this site and we are here candleberry, if you dont know you ask, everyone here is happy to answer questions, and we have all been here at some point, now what do i do, well i assume you have the canna in the ground, so dig it it up and wash of as much of the soil as you can, trying not to break of to many roots, after you have washed it leave it to drain and dry a little, then put it into a polythene bag and fold over the edges, it is important not to let the canna dry out in winter, but it must not freeze or get to cold either, its a ballance thing, moist and cool is all it needs till spring, when the new shoots start to appear pot it up to give it a head start, or leave it till the weather warms up, others may give you a better idea for what they do and what is better for your area, i dig mine up and put them in big pots and keep them in a greenhouse, works for me most of the time.
I keep most of my cannas in big pots around the patio, and keep them well watered and fertilized because they are heavy feeders. I know I probably should dig them up and divide them in the fall, but I just let the frost bite them back and bring the pots into the utility room for the winter. Every now and then I will water them just a little to keep them from completely drying up. I usually divide them in the spring. Last year Mama put a pot of Cleopatra on the glassed-in front porch. It never died back, but it didn't bloom in the winter. This summer that pot has done great. It's been blooming its' head off. It is getting pot bound, and I need to repot it soon. Linda
Thanks everyone. This site is so helpful!
