Compost and topsoil

Sanford, FL(Zone 9b)

Does anyone know why bagged compost and topsoil are wet when bagged? It seems like it would be so much better for everyone's back if everything was bagged dry. I bought some dry mushroom compost last year that was blessedly dry, but this year all I find is wet and heavy. Thanks for any thoughts.

lori, I don't think it's supposed to be wet. wonder if maybe the bag(s) had pinholes and moisture got in.

It was probably hot and the condensation causes the moisture. Or maybe they wet it so it weights more and sell it by the pound. teehee!!

I wish I had a good reason or answer for you. I much prefer to buy stuff that is nice and fluffy or at least loose. Often when it's wet, not only is it heavy, it gets all clumped up! I guess it just takes on a lot of moisture sitting outside?

Well, I know those 15 40-lb. bags weighed a lot more than 40 lbs.!!!!! I think they get rained on.

Sometimes, the moisture makes it moldy, musty smelling too.

I have a feed and seed nearby that keeps all it's bags of compost, etc. on pallets and each evening they put them back in the warehouse. Their bags area always dry and to me it is worth the extra money they charge. The bags at the big boxes are always wet from the rain or the sprinklers and they are way too heavy.
