My fancy trim:
carpentry help on lean to greenhouse
Looks so good.
Tami
Looks awesome Connie. Ya done did good! Really jazzes up that cedar. I wanted to write last night but was so fed up with the computer shutting down that I gave up and went on to bed.
You never cease to amaze me with your talents. I wanna be just like you when I grow up!
Janet
This is looking so awesome Connie. It will be the classiest looking GH I've ever seen. lol
We are both going to have so much fun working in our GH's this spring. :-)
Donna
Thank you Donna, it's been such a fun project. I'm spending way to much time out there already. I have so much I should be doing instead. Mom's on her way next week! I should be cleaning house! I've barely started shopping, but I am thinking about it, and what I want to give my loved ones...and that's half the battle.
Janet was here today and helped me do several things. Some stuff needing doing isn't noticable, but just nit pickin'. We got the tree down and a tiny section of poly panel up under the eaves by the old fence to close that off. And fixed another place in the upper gate needing some trim around a cut out where I inserted a glass sun into from an old candle holder.
My boyfriend helped me get the framing done a couple weeks ago and the roof on, but has only seen it once since then before I got too far along. I sent him a pic in an email last night after I did the fancy trimming. He wrote back and says,
"I thought it was gonna be a greenhouse ?...it looks like a cottage!" LOL
Janet, I think you are. ;^)
Thanks Tammy, Did you get those ends closed up on yours?
Connie,
I think we might work on it this weekend. Its not something I can work on myself because of the height. We have to put the ladder in back of the truck to reach the top. I was in a rush before we got the Plumerias dug up because the Idea was to dig them and put them inside so they wouldn't go completely dormant. Because the cold got them ahead of time I just dug them up as usual and put them in the shop. I guess as we get the sides finished we will pot them up slowly so as to get a head start this Spring. The 10 X 20 Greenhouse is full of some trees and seedlings plus other tropicals. The sunroom has the Hoya, plumeria cuttings and other tender plants. The Bathroom has all the Begonias. Here's a picture of how tall the greenhouse is. You can kind of tell with the truck there. The truck has a lift kit on it too.
Tami
Good grief Tammy! It's is tall! How wonderful! I hope you get to work on it this weekend. I have one plumeria and it's lost all it's leaves. I'm supposed to just ignore it until the spring (according to Al Cook where I got it). It's protected under the patio which is covered in plastic. He said I could dig it up and leave it laying there in the shop necked and then replant it in the spring but I can't bring myself to do that. This is my first so I have no idea if I did the right thing. We'll see in the spring.
Connie,
Your Plumeria will be fine as long as you don't water it until you see new growth in the Spring. I have loads of mine bare root in the shop. The first year it was hard. They are very resilient. I hope we get to work on it too. We need to get busy remodeling the Kitchen but Allen said he wants to finish up the greenhouse first. Sounds good to me.
Tami
I can roll up the extension cords. We have electricity! New circuit with two outlets with a GFCI and 2 three way switches so I can turn on or off the lights from either the back door or the pool deck at the top of the stairs. Still have a GFCI to put on the light.
Next...WATER. The laundry room is right behind the house wall that is enclosed as the greenhouse so there's hot and cold water PVC within a foot of where it needs to be. Just gotta reach my hand under the house and snip.
Connie, you need to post some new photos showing the new gate on a gate and the glass that was installed. It's looking great! I know you are glad to have the electricity job behind you now. Hopefully it will warm up in the next few days so that you can get the water hooked up. Are you going to use that old washer as your "sink"?
Man you've been busy!! Looks great Connie! So, ya got some GreenHouse Real Estate I could have for some seeds for our butterfly gardens? 8^D
Rickly has donated some "things" to the project. A small air compressor and 2 Nail Guns. I'm going to write this here so I don't forget to tell you what they take - 1 1/2" - 2 1/4" nails, 16 or 18 ga. nails. I have a whole box of 2" for one gun. The other gun is about half full.
ALSO, a black box with a router in it. He wasn't very forthcoming with info about tips on using it, so I also have a book called Routing Tips and another one on woodworking. They've been in our bathroom long enough for him to have read them. HAHAHA I know how you like to research things, so you can keep those books in YOUR bathroom for a while.
He said to be sure to hook up the compressor closest to the power source and hook it up directly (not with an extension cord). I told him about your electric set up and he said that was excellent. It's not the "pancake" one like I thought, but the one that was in the little shed out back. He said neither he nor Robbin were using it. (Remind me to make the noise he said to listen for 8~p ) Robbin picked up the pancake the other day.
I couldn't leave this afternoon to go to the lumber yard for treated 2 X 4's for the next two benches because I had to wait for a customer, so I decided to get busy on the floor instead. I had enough bricks in a pile I've had stacked up next to the fence for a year or more to do the center floor where the walking space is. Saved enough to fill in around the sides between each end brick to square it up later. Not sure this is wide enough yet so I didn't cut any bricks for those holes, I just estimated on the space since the other two benches are not there yet but I think I might be real close. I swept it when I finished but didn't hose them off yet because it got time for supper. I bet they'll be purdy when they are clean. :)
WOW! That's great Connie. Awesome job!
Too bad the Habitat store closed down. Hey! Didn't that lady we talked to say they'd have a major liquidation sale or something in January there? We need to check that out to see if there are any bricks left.
Connie, that is awesome looking!! You are going to have the fanciest GH in Texas. :-)
My new GH is still sitting in the garage in boxes. :-( I am so anxious to get started on putting it up, but we still have a few things to do in the area that will house it. Just haven't had the time this week to get much done and now the weatherman says we are getting some rain for the next 2 days. Oh well, I'll just continue to watch you as you finish your lovely GH, ok?
Donna
Thanks. I'm so proud of it's progress even tho it's taken me nearly two months. I appreciate you watching. I have to do it when I have free time which I have very little of. Oh... I wish I could help you put yours up. I know you are chomping at the bit. I know I would be!
I've been out there this evening. Janet and I went to the lumber yard this afternoon so I could get the boards I needed to finish the "L" part of the bench that's left which connects to the one I already built. They will make a "U" when it's finished. I got the opposite one finished just now and the center is already framed and ready but ran out of battery juice in both the saw and the drill. :( I'd fire up the big saw but I hate to be inconsiderate to my neighbors. The battery circular is much quieter. So I'll wait an hour then get back out there and cut the rest of the boards for the center bench. I took some pics of the new one and will post the whole "U" as soon as I get done. I hope to be finished with both those tonight. Won't take but a couple minutes to chop those boards and screw them down.
Sure your not building a new home? lol
Your wood working skills are amazing. Everything looks soooo nice. Wish you could come over and help me with mine too. It would probably be put together perfectly. lol
As I was out in the garage today, putting away all the Christmas boxes, I just looked at the GH boxes and said "yea, your next" .
Donna
LOL That's what my boyfriend keep saying about it being a cottage. The other day when I showed him my electricity I'd run he said... "yep...(nodding his head) you'll be renting it out as an apartment." ha ha It's got everything it needs. Still need to do the sink but I hope I can be ready enough in the main part for my big plants this weekend since they're predicting a cold front next week. In the low 20's. I'll worry with the sink later. I put valves on the hot and cold so I can use tboth for now.
Having the right tools makes all the difference. The big circular saw I am scared of in some situations. It's heavy and I refuse to use it vertically so I ask for help when that is necessary.Like when I needed to cut into the side of the house to get to the drain of the laundry room. I asked my tenant to make that one cut for me. I just don't feel comfortable doing that. I have visions of it hanging up and kicking back on me and I'd rather not chance it. The cordless is wonderful and light. Perfect for cedar and fence boards which I have used a lot of. I used it for those 2 X 4's framing the benches and that's what ate up my battery so fast. OK Hours up! Time to get back to it! :)
This is coming down from the pool deck stairs. It's all enclosed here. You can see the dutch door open. There's four more feet to the right but it's a mess over there right now so I will not show you that area. :)...yet. That's where the water is up against the house and all my scrap boards and ladders are stacked there for now.
Awesome Connie! YEAH! I need to check with Rick (my hubby, for those that don't know) to see if he's got any of that cedar stain left that we stained our fence. Then those pickets would look like cedar even if they aren't. There is something else that he used on my fountain that is supposed to protect cedar. We need to find out the name of it and get some for the outside. An ounce of prevention and all of that...
Your new bench is beautiful with that window. Ya done did good!
You oughta plant your butterfly garden in front of that swinging window. I got seeeeeeeeeeeeeds like you wouldn't believe from the other butterfly mamas. Imagine butterflies fluttering in and out all day long. Oh yeaaaaaaah! Waybigo grin! We could even build a cat cage in the greenhouse, portable so you could park it outside in the spring and summer. Oooooooooooohhhh Yeah! Time to get yours built!
You were typing while I was typing. Incredible! I love it! Sooooooooooooooo.... time to get some seeds started in there.
Great photos! Really shows the area well Connie. I'm so proud of ya!
I'm nearly there! Thanks Janet. I might start moving some plants in there tomorrow evening if I have enough daylight. I have a full day of vehicles. If not, then Saturday for sure. Still need to build a soil bin under there. And the upper shelves. But it's really taking shape now. :)
Yes we should definitely start some seeds. The yard will get done. Gotta have a fence within the fence first to reclaim more real estate....*rolling my eyes* ...Riley.
Oh! Remember the double Shepherds hook from Linda's I had in the front ? I saw someone in the bird watching forum that had bird feeders on theirs! Great idea huh? Have them right out the window where I could watch from inside.
My brick area estimation worked out good too. I think all I need now is the half bricks filled in and it's good to go. Get a few bags of gravel from HD and spread it under the benches.
I started on the upper shelf this morning. It's 12 foot long all the way across the top where it can take advantage of nice morning sun. Got it nearly ready to hang and had no screws long enough to reach thru the 2 X 4, the fence and another 2 X 4 brace on the fence for support. So I called Janet and we went to the lumber yard to pick up those and a couple more cedar boards to trim the shelf once it was up. Janet helped get the shelf up and trimmed when we got back. I nearly forgot to take a pic of it finished with no plants on it. So I took the plants I had up there back down to get the pic of it up and empty. Then put them all back up there. I moved a few in this evening before it got too dark to see to carry them in. Got a few of my hanging baskets up. I'm able to see now that this will work out great because of the height of the greenhouse. It's nearly 14 feet at it's highest so I put the longest hangy downs on that end. I was able to stand on the benchs to put up hooks to hang a few. No head bumps on pots while on the ground even tho some dangle down pretty far. Altho ...a few roots on the split leaf philodendron that forced their way out the coconut liner are dangling way down, some four feet long! So it's like a jungle in there even with the few I have already. LOL I'll move the rest in tomorrow when I have daylight to see um.
Oh! AND we got tunes in there now too. :)
You've got plants!!!! Woooooooooohoooooooooooo!! And just in the nick of time too with the freeze we have predicted. Hard to believe that we'll get sleet and other cool stuff considering that at the moment, my AC is running in my house and Rick was wearing shorts when I got back home today.
It's been almost 60 days since the start of this thread. It's unbelievable how much you've accomplished, considering it's a" weekend" and "anyfreemoment" project. Connie it looks awesome! The photos turned out great. They really bring out the contrast in the colors of wood. I can see though that we're definitely gonna have to cover those treated boards around the stained glass windows. I know you won't be happy looking at it until it's trimmed.
I wrote Mom and told her about working today. I told her what all we did today. I hope you sent these photos to her.
Really looks fantastic! I bet you are sitting out there right now with a waybigo goofy grin on your face! HAHAHAHA
Janet
ps I'd be thrilled if my kitchen remodel goes as fast as this "new" construction has gone for you!
Glass man brought my glass for the dutch door top this morning. What a sweety. He knew I needed it before this freeze.
I'm getting organized. Got a couple big sterite bins at Big Lots this afternoon for potting soil and a tiny whisk broom and dustpan. Cleaned up a big rubbermaid trash can that I've had for years to put in there. Brass hook for my flannel shirt or jacket got mounted and a couple eye bolts for scissors and pruning shears on the side of the bench. Messing around in there now.... making it mine.... :) This feels great.
