Ron! ... L@@K ... Acapulco Blue Morning Glory is Blooming

Mesilla Park, NM

Emma, great photos. The others have not bloomed yet, once I can get out there I'll check out yours, mine and Ron's to see if they have any buds. They were planted before the Acapulco Blue one, I do know that yours has runners that already rooted on the ground and I've got to dig them up and pot some up to bring inside (just in case). Tonight down to 32 degrees here so it said on the news awhile ago, so any buds, leaves left out will freeze/brown for sure.

Ron, it looks strange to me without that mauve look to it that I associate with the Blue Dawn.. I'm getting more used to the fact that there could be different colors of indica (white), etc. lots' to learn yet for me.

Thanks Antoinette . . .

I am so not ready for c-o-l-d weather. Nights are going to be in the low to high 50's here for the next few days with one dip to 46, then who knows. Heck, this is Texas. Weather here changes by the minute. Friday will be sunny as well as all of next week and day temps will climb from the 70's back to the 80's by the end of next week. I am trying to get a head start on getting my plants ready to over-winter instead of the 'night before' like last year *sigh*.
Ooooh to live in Florida *-*

Emma - This view here
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/EmmaGrace_1193061371_199.jpg
looks like I.indica...the shape of the upper portion of the sepals is wider than I've seen before but other than that everything about the sepals says indica...

I'd really(!) like to get a better view of the secondary bracts below the sepals...

The flower color is very distinctive for an I.indica because the color is most similar to the sky blue most usually seen on I.hederacea
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/9563/
but the sepals are I.indica after assessing the views of all the different stages shown so far...

You can never post too many sepal shots for me because that is the outer window to the inner genetics on these...

HI Ron . . .
Thanks for more information about this beauty.
I had no Blooms this morning, so I took a few photos of sepals and buds. It was cold and very windy again. Then, the next time I was near the vines late today around 5:30, the Blooms were starting to close/or had barely opened because of the weather.

Emma - Thanks for the additional sepal views...all aspects considered it still looks like Ipomoea indica...

The unusual feature seen on these sepals is that they apparently have a narrowing in the middle before widening near the top and eventually developing a pointed tip...the narrow mid section of the sepals is an unusual feature, but everything else about the outer calyx is standard Ipomoea indica...

Thanks Ron . . .

Do you think it would be worth the effort to cross pollinate this one with my I. indica that does not produce seeds?

I didn't get the chance to look at all of the blooms today, however, what I did notice is that the blooms that opened late yesterday were still open this morning.

Here are a couple of those photos.

This photo [not very good shot of this one] is from

Hi Emma - Sure it's worth trying although that one strain of I.indica that you have and that you shared with me seems to be both very intra and inter incompatible...a tough cookie to cross fertilize...

The more strains of I.indica that you have the greater the likelihood of getting compatible cross fertilizations = seeds of new I.indica crosses...

Thanks Ron -

Also, I am going to try to get cuttings of this strain and hopefully they will live this year.

Is there such a thing as an 'Annual' I. indica?

Beautiful photos Emma,

The first flowers are making seedpods here, also this morning there were two or three with reversed tubes, so, I handpollinated these ones, will go take a couple of photos in a bit.. Also, the flower is about 3 inches big in dia and about 3 inches tall too.. Alot smaller than the regular indica.. will go take the photos and measure it with a ruler.

here are a couple of photos, not really good ones, as I damaged the flowers some with the paint brush, I did notice that these bruise very easily too. Normally I don't get any bruising on the others.

Also these were even smaller today..

a couple of seedpod photos (at least I hope they are seedpods)

seedpod two.. this one is from a couple of days ago, maybe two days old, the first one is the from the first bloom last week.

Here is one measured, it is only 2 inches across, I did measure about the same length vertically.. I could be the cold that has made them smaller, but I believe they are smaller than the indica even if it were not cold..

Emma, are they smaller than your I. indicas.. I still haven't seen buds on mine here, so, I'll keep checking.

The cordate leaves you see in the photos are NOT from the I. indica, they are from I. argillicola as they are innertwined, so you may also see seedpods belonging to argillicola that are bagged and some are not.

This particular plant indica has not had any heartshaped leaves at all, not yet anyway, maybe it will develope them later, the older it gets.

Great information - Thanks for your input.

I can't believe all of the Reversed Tubes you are getting.
Amazing!
That is awesome!

I am happy to hear that you will get seeds.
I need to get out there an examine mine more closely, which I haven't done in a while to see what is up with hopeful seedpods.

It will be strange to me if I do not get seeds because the Mother Plant had tons of seeds.
This is such an unusual MG.

I had no blooms today!

Next year, these guys are not going to be growing up this monster tall ladder, I have the perfect spot to plant them that will also be a good shelter as well when the weather starts to get cooler.

Emma - I'm not aware of any strains of Ipomoea indica that are annual...it is much more likely to have a species that is officially classed as an annual to sometimes act as a ashort lived perennial than for a true perennial to behave as an annual...unless the pereennial is not cold hardy in the zone it was grown in when it did not continue as a perennial...

There are certainly some unusual features on this strain...the sepals and flower characteristics are atypical but not necessarily precluding of an ID of Ipomoea indica...

Might be time to start a continuation as Thread Part #2 as this thread is getting a bit long...

Gourd - Thanks for the additional photos, measurements and observations...

I'm very interested to see the seedpods as they develop further towards maturity...

Ron,
That makes sense to me because mine did not live last year. So, I am curious how Antoinette's will behave inside in her pot.

Here is Thread #2
