Ron! ... L@@K ... Acapulco Blue Morning Glory is Blooming

Emma,
I germinated one of your seeds this week, this is what it looks like. It came from the baggie that said something about your not growing these yet.

I have some started too. So far I see the three lobed leaf. They look like wild nils but they also favor indicas. I`m going to do some experiments on these later and report back later.

Mesilla Park, NM

Just bumping this up cuz mine has a bud and I think it will open in the morning.. Anyone else have flowers yet? I also thought it kinda looked like an Indica...

Emma, did you all ID this one? It has the most twisted sepals, then they are straight as can be with the growth of the bud.

Gourd - Can you post photos of the sepals at the various stages and angles on the plant you are growing...

Gourd - I would be very interested to see whatever ID parts you can post...

I did offer an ID albeit tentative pending further review of relevant plant parts...

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3114673

I'm wondering if the sepals are varying alot on the same exact vine...

This looks like indica
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=2906397
The sepals on here could be indica but not as distinct as in the prior photo
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=2906398

These look strangely elongated and 'odd' and not at all like the prior views
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=2906402
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=2906403

The sepals here look inbetween the prior photos
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=2906410

These sepals look more like indica especially the maroon-like pigmentation on the inside of the sepals...
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=3112893
These are unusual and atypical but closer to I.indica than to I.nil...the sepals on the flowerbud are not so unusual but the pronounced backward bending on the early flowerbud is very unusual...
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=3112896

These look like I.indica but they are changing alot at different stages...
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=3112898
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=3112900

Beth - Do you have any updates on plant parts to report
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3429207

Gardener2005 - Do you have updates on relevant ID structures...I'd really like to see some seedpods both still green but almost mature and fully mature but still on the vine...

I have nothing but leaves to show on mine but the year is not over. If it buds and blooms I`ll let you know.

I see it was the week of November 12 that Emma`s bloomed. Karen

My vines started blooming this week [that I have noticed], and today is the first chance I have had to get a photo. So, they are a month ahead of last years schedule.

I'll take more photos in a few minutes as soon as Jerry can drag the ladder back there so I can photo some at the top. This bloom is from the bottom.

It is apparant that this MG is a LATE BLOOMER. I started seeds this year very early and they were one of the first that I planted in the ground early spring. So, look how long before blooms . . . and not until the temps dip a bit do they start to bloom at all. This to me is strange because of the zone 11 Acapulco where I collected the seeds. When I was there in late December there were only a couple of blooms and all other vines had gone to seed. So, I have to also assume they are at this very moment in Full Bloom in Acapulco.

These photos are not too great because of the sun, so I'll take more in a few minutes.

I was too late for most of the blooms. They were already closing up. I only got one still open that the color had already started to become a lighter Blue. Also got a couple of sepal shots.

Will try for better photos over the next few days.

Emma, I like that lighter color.. very nice..

I took these this morning, but just got home and they look darker, but I have the plant inside the house and took some with blue paper behind it on a couple of shots. Will take more as they start to bloom. I forgot to handpollinate to see if it will make seeds.. but will do that later also.

here is a series of photos from this morning. The vine itself reminds me of indica, but the sepals remind me of hederacea. I'm just learning to ID, so this is very difficult for me to figure out.

There are no hairs on the sepals or the stems, so that is where I am confused.

edited for grammer... not only is my spelling off...yikes.

Antoinette,
Beautiful Photos. . .

Your plant looks so healthy too.

All I can tell you is that when I got these seeds in Acapulco, they were loaded with seeds. I lost my vines last year to frost before I could see if I would get seeds. Maybe with yours inside, we will learn more about this plant.

I have quite a few buds on mine, so hopefully will have lots of blooms over the next week or so.

Fascinating vine and great photos Emma and Antoinette!!

Mesilla Park, NM

Thanks, we really need more than just TWO hands to take photos..lol.

I bruised the flower on that last shot. I like it no matter what, the name fits it too.

edited to add:

The winds here are really going at it, everything that I couldn't fit inside looks awful and I think the cold and wind are a bad combo.. I don't know what will be left.

Okay...the additional photos is causing me to lean heavily in favor of a revised ID of Ipomoea indica...

I have seen the sepals on some of my plants recurve
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4108280
but only while the flowerbuds are very young and when the sepals are not protruding much off of the top of the bud..the sepals do eventually straighten as the flowerbud matures...

The sepals on this plant are protruding more and recurving more because they are longer than usually seen on I.indica at the juvenile bud stage...

I'd like to see a flowercluster top
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=2906402
that has dropped all of the calyxs ...I.indica has a tendency to retain the lower bracts after the main calyx has dropped whereas hederacea and nil almost always drop these bracts before the main calyx body is dropped

I can see the light cover of felty hairs on the stems, just not much visible on the calyx which is not unusual...

Do the flowers last only one day(?) or for several days(?)...

Flower measurements...corolla width and length...how does the length and width compare to other I.indica(?)...

Seedpods(!)...

axial area where it has lost the main leaf...indica will often produce light protrusions that look like the tips of roots...and roots will emerge from these nodes if conditions elicit rooting..

Perennial or annual...(?)...is there anything that is visible about the roots or basal area of the main stem that would suggest either...

Interesting color if this is I.indica
Not quite the exact color of this form with the semi-separated petals here
http://www.hear.org/starr/hiplants/images/hires/starr_030202_0074_ipomoea_indica.jpg
but a very nice Sky Blue...

Looking forward to any additional informational views...

Ron . . .

Thanks for the great information.

Here are a few photos that I just took and will go back to get some better ones as soon as I can. It is pouring rain right now and it was very windy when I took these photos and not much fun hanging on top of my ladder. The blooms were getting knocked around pretty good, so this is going to be it for blooms today. I will at least try for a better shot of a flower cluster top where yesterdays blooms were, the couple that I did take didn't turn out that great. I didn't take a ruler out with me so will do that another day. I'm guessing these are about 3" Blooms.

If this is a perennial, it is not in my 8aTX Zone as they did not live for me last year. I did root plants successfully last year, but they didn't live. I'll try that again this year and see how they do.

The Blue in these photos are very accurate and is exactly the way they look in person.
