Thank you so much, Terry!

You're very welcome!

I've always been fascinated with fungi, mosses & lichens. Maybe it stems from the early Walt Disney animated movies where these were used very artistically in forest scenes. And to be honest I hate to mow over them in the lawn with the garden tractor because of the 'splatter' they make; especially the big ones. This summer I took some pictures of some I thought of as interesting and appealing. Below is a photo of one that I like.

BTW, Thanks Terry for expanding the Ferns forum to encompass Fungi & Mosses. Now I know what to do with some of the pictures I've saved. Below is a strange fungi I found growing in the mulch beneath a Black Hills Spruce. It reminds me a deep sea animal, and the color is unique.

TBDGN, I don't know if you're interested, but I've found the name, for your curious finding; Mutinus caninus. It sprouts from an egg under the soil and has a smell which is attractive to flies.

Thanks bonitin, for that information. I've noticed that it only appears in areas where I allow natural mulch to accumulate. It also seems to disintegrate or "wilt" after only a couple of days. I had not been as careful to take note of fungi in the past, but this thread has fueled my curiosity.

Below is another strange looking one I found beneath a white pine where the needles form a natural mulch.

That's a beauty. Natural mulch is best, I guess.
