ladybugs

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

I was cutting my grass yesterday for the final time this year and noticed a bunch of ladybugs and "babies" on my crepe myrtles. During the summer we went a long time w/o water and my crepe myrtles got infested with aphids really bad. I noticed ladybugs then so nature was trying to take care of this pest. Anyway, we have had temps in the low 20's for the last 3 days and hi's in the 40's. Are they gonna make it?
I took some pics because they were so many ladybugs at different stages, it was neat.

I think something is wrong with this one. He never closed his wings. I hope it isn't b/c of the cold. If so then there will be alot not making it. I bet there there was 20 on each tree. I there 7 trees.

Oh I hate to spoil your cheer with the arrival of the ladybugs. I suspect
yours are the invading asian lady bug. They swarm on the south side of
buildings at this time of year. I had a horrible time with them in the house
a couple years ago. They arrived in the east coast about 10 years ago.

Oh boy, will they survive the winter?

Here's the thread I started on this topic last year. Thankfully they did not swarm in the
house last winter. I've got a few buzzing around the house now but only a couple...

I sure hope I dont have that problem. I jsut wanted them to eat the aphids on my crepe myrtles!

So, do these asian lady beetles eat aphids, or not? Sounds like a dumb question, but I read the other thread and two articles hyperlinked to it, and I'm not sure.

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

I'm not sure but I'm thinking yes. What else would have attracted them to my crepe myrtles? My trees had ladybugs and yellow jackets everyhwere .

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Hmmmm... too bad the asian beetles won't eat yellow jackets!

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Yeah. Too bad chocolate has calories, too.

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

Yeah, but I still eat the chocolate!

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Not if I get to it first!!!

I think these got here (US) as natural aphid control. You know, "Buy a box of these and your aphids are history"?
I've had a few in the house this season. A few years ago they were so bad in the region, it made the TV news, lol.

I've heard of them being bad but never here. I had an aphid problem so bad on my crepe myrtles this year ( I didnt know CM's were attractive to aphids). I had noticed the leaves turing yellow and dropping but thought it was from no water (hadn't rained in a long time) then when I rode by them on the lawnmower, I noticed all these yellow jackets buzzing around. I got off the lawnmower and took a close look and they were COVERED with aphids. I have 6 in the front and 3 more in the back yard and they were covered too.
I tried spraying to no avail. It took me 11 water hoses to reach all six of the CM's in the front yard to spray them with water and try to get them off. I know people going by thought I was nuts but I didn't care. I was on a mission! I couldn't keep up with them that way either. I watched as my trees turned black from the mold from the "dew droppings". My neighbor across the street has 11 in her front yard (we bought ours the same time so they'd match on both sides of the street) she hasn't had one problem! She hasn't done anything but avoid hitting them with the mower. I fertilzed mine in early spring, pruned at the proper time, checked on them from time to time ... go figure.
I guess I need to go over to the tree& shrub forum and see if they have any suggestions ugh?

Careful... those tree & shrub folks are a pretty rough and tumble crew!

I woke up sharing my pillow with one of those darn asian ladybugs. I just hate them!

ugh? Should I retract my question over there?

Just be prepared for a lot of testostorone. I kinda enjoy it but its a different culture
than many of the forums.
