It's Way Too Soon!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

We've had a killing frost for 2 nights in a row .. it's about 3 weeks too early! How sad it was to look out my bedroom window yesterday morning to see this.

Anyone else having early killing frosts as well?

Yup, very depressing. The first plants to really show the effects are the Hosta. We've had snow 3x already this year. Not that it stuck to the ground but we still had flurries.

Yep, earliest freeze since 1953. Took out most of the midlands of South Carolina and middle Georgia.

and we are having an unusually mild and long fall........which means we'll probably have a late spring, with frosts to kill the fruit blossoms. My mullein bloomed in its first year this year. They are not supposed to bloom until the second year. We think the combination of unusual heat waves followed by unseasonalble cold fronts this past year have confused the plant into thinking it had passed through two years.

I've purchased extra ag cloth for the garden so we can run out to cover and wrap at least some of the plants if we are scheduled for untimely frost. I was used to such unpredictable weather when gardening in the mountains. Never expected such extremes at sea level.

Wow .. I didn't realize this freeze was that wide spread.

We've had nights in the 40's, pretty cool for here. I am surprised you had a killing frost in S'ville.

It surprised me! I knew we were going to have a frost .. but not a bad enough one to knock out the brugs, canna and confederate rose! I noticed the ginger is gone too. The bad thing was that it was 2 nights in a row.

I remember our first hard frost very well. I had a row of Mexican Salvias still blooming well and that morning when I looked out they were all brown.

I thought they would come away this Spring, dug the roots up which looked o.k., planted them in a new spot 8 weeks ago but no growth whatsoever, so I finally pulled them up and threw them away. I wish I had known they would not take frosts and had saved some seed.

Wow, that's terrible. Kind of makes you not want to garden. Do the plants come back up in the spring or do they just die ?

Tonight we will have our first frost and possible light freeze. I have been running around like crazy getting plants put up for winter and digging and potting up plants that would freeze. I sure hate to see winter comeing. I'm not ready for this. It was hard to dig my beautiful coleus plants and pot them up. sigh

Wow..sure seems early for a first frost to me..and I grew up in East Texas..Now we live in the Texas Coast...The coolest temps so far have been the mid to lo 40s..Hoping it does like it has the last few years..Holds off till bout December. This will be our 3rd year down here..so not sure what the norm is..

I can't remember from year to year but I don't think we had a frost/freeze this early last year. Local weatherman says we will have another freeze Monday night-Tuesday morning. My bougies are in pots but I will have to cut them back so I can get them in the plant room for winter. And they are blooming. sigh

Betterbloom I have lots of plants that will die back in winter but will come back out in spring. I have most of my tender plants in pots but some I had put in the gardens so I had to dig those and pot up for winter or they would have died.
