Hi! I have been seeeing wonderful dahlia pics on the photo forum and realized that I have several in my garden that I planted. (After I planted them I forgot what they were- I think I have halfheimers!) I do enjoy them...but here's the stupid newbie question for the week- are dahlias perennials or annuals????? i really like 'em and they grow easy- so what do I do to keep them up? Collect Seeds? (Another new thing for me to learn..) or what??
A gardening newbie in love with roses thanks you all for expandning her brain already!

This is probably a "stupid" newbie question...
They are half hardy perennial plants which form a hand like tuber.
In the Fall, wait until the first frosts have blackened the foliage and then lift the whole plant and chop off the plant. Store the tubers upside down in a frost free airy place and once the remaining stem has dried, store the whole thing in sawdust or other dry material...flowers of sulpher can prevent fungal attacks. The old trick was to store it in the compost heap until all chance of frost has passed.
When its time to dig them out again, you may notive some growth on the 'fingers' of the tuber, each one can be cut away from the hand and propegated as a whole plant.
Frost will kill it, so don't plant out until all risk has passed.
If this is a bit much to do or you don't have the space, they flower first year from seed or cuttings taken in the Fall and kept in a frost free greenhouse will do just as well.
Jennesue just remember there are no stupid questions. Any of the great folks here at Daves Garden are more than happy to answer any questions.

Paul you sure are right. I've received so much help and support here. If you don't ask, you don't know.
The only Stupid question is the one not asked! Halfhiemers...is that like sometimers? Sometimes I remember and sometimes I can't remember what it was I was trying to remember...If so...I have it bad!
That's what wrong with me I have both sometimers and halfhimers, Mike
