Rumor heard at the Post office today

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

My favorite rep. told me today USPS is discussing the possibility of discontinuing parcel post service. That would mean every package would have to go priority mail. I mailed something today parcel post that cost $14, it would have cost $22 priority mail. My mail ordering days look grim. However, this is just a rumor at this point.

Also, neither this rep nor my carrier knew anything about getting bonuses, or any kind of incentive pay for when you schedule package pickup. If anybody has the correct info in this regard, I would appreciate your posting here.

Hi Vossner! Is that $22 priority mail different than the $8.10 flat rate PM box ? What a bummer.

K,the item I mailed physically didn't fit in a flat rate box. So I had to go to the grocery store and get a bigger box for my package. But it would have cost $22 to mail priority. I just couldn't do that.

Oh, that's high.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

My mail-out was just the opposite last week. I was mailing a pkg and parcel post would've cost $11.65. Priority Mail only cost $11.35.

The difference in price though was due to the size of the pkg and if I shipped it parcel post they would charge me an extra fee because of the size/shape of the pkg. However, if shipped Priority they waived the extra fee. Go figger, eh?

I guess the moral of the story is to have them check both ways of shipping to see which is the better deal. (As long as they are still using parcel post, which I really hope is just a rumor that they'll get rid of it. I'll ask at my post office and see if they know anything along that line.)

They have always ben priced real close for me also. Also if I am shipping live plants I prefer them to spend less time on the road.

Shoe, good idea as you say to ck both fees. and if diff. is $2 or less I will opt for PM. However, from my town, the decision is not as clear cut when it goes to far East (Maine) or far west (CA, WA). Diff. is substantial.

I also hope the rumor is bogus. What am I doing blabbing off rumors, anyway? I know better than that! lol

"the decision is not as clear cut when it goes to far East (Maine) or far west (CA, WA). Diff. is substantial. "

Yep, I'm sure there is a great big difference. (My pkg was going from NC to Fla, not really that far.)

I recently learned about the postal website that lets you figure up postage before you go to the post office and get surprised. It works great! But still, for those weird-sized pkgs like mine was they figure up the charge once you're there. Oh well....

Will let ya'll know what my postmaster says when I quiz him on this issue. Sure hope things don't change.
