Mildew on Phlox

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

My garden phlox are getting mildew on their leaves again. Anyone know what to do or what I can use to stop this from happening? It seems to be happening earlier this year.

I don't have the same problem, although many friends around here do. I have phlox paniculata 'davidii' which is highly resistant. My monarda, however, has a bad case and I plan to trash it and get 'jacob cline' which is quite resistant.

Some cultivars are mildew resistant but generally you need better air circulation around the plants. Either thin them out so they're not bunched up or move them where they're not on top of each other. Don't water at night and try not to wet the leaves when watering, either. You can use: 2 TBSP baking soda in a gallon of water, mix thoroughly, then spray on the leaves to treat the fungus (3 days in a row, then weekly). I have heard that a 1/3 milk-2/3 water will also help but I've never used this one.

Darius, do you suppose you'll have any phlox seeds or seedlings to share? I dug up some P. paniculata from my parents home this spring and moved it to my garden, but it's not faring so well. If you're interested in a trade, please e-mail me to let me know what you're interested in.
