There aren't many of them left. Most are in north central Long Island.

I had no idea there were rattlesnakes in the NE. You may keep them on LI. I have relatives in San Antonio who used to hunt rattlesnake for a living. I don't know them personally, cousins of cousins. Sell the skins, and make sausage out of the meat. those Texicans are a fun bunch.
Crock - those are cool pics. We have Timber Rattlers here in WI on some of the taller hills-is a mountain 1,000' ? Never went looking for one though.
Gram, SShhhh! I was just trying to scare someone. I don't think too many rattlers are on LI.
Dave, I think 'someone' was already scared ;) and ONE is too many...have you ever counted them?
sorry - I was too busy with another garter snake in my basement. I've found out that my other neighbor doesn't mind picking them up so it's alot easier to get rid of them. Now I just have to figure out how it got in. Since the last one, I haven't been using the screen door, but rather closing the main door. I almost wonder if it was the same one I got rid of the last time since he was in the same orchid. I should have marked him some how. Attached is a picture of what they look like. I googled it, so I can't take credit for it.
I have pale cousins of this snake in my yard. Holly (cat) has found two in the basement and brought them a little worse for wear -but alive and squirming up to the kitchen for me. I just put them in a sheltered place outside - without actually touching them. My 90 year-old neighbor says that they come in through cracks in the block walls of our basements. Anita - want to borrow Holly? I know that Wallingford would be happy to get rid of her for awhile.
Anita, from the size of the hand in your google pic, I think I could handle that one. easy to say, though. i don't even like worms. maybe with a gardening glove on.
Is anyone else getting a little overwhelmed by the ever increasing number of Forums on DG? Last check there were 195. Last Winter we lost the "New Posts" page where we could see the most recently updated/added threads. I REALLY MISS this feature.
I started a thread in the Daves Garden forum asking for something like this to be added, again. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/663275/ Any support would be greatly appreciated.
I added another year to my subscription a few weeks ago but find myself visiting here less and less. If it wasn't for this Musings thread, I might not visit at all.
How many times have we read a post saying "I didn't know there was a forum for that!". A "New Posts" tab - page - forum would open this entire site, giving every forum a wider exposure. As it is now most of us only check out our 'favorites'. That leaves out about 160 Forums. I miss many interesting posts that may pop up on other 'regional' or 'topic specific' forums.
Most every other 'Message Board' type site I visit has a 'New Post' page, even my little home town site.
Thanks for your time.

Maybe you should state this to Dave[the real Dave]? Perhaps if there is enough interest, he would reinstate it.
I agree with Andy that this would make things easier to manage and also to catch things you might be interested in. There is just SO much here.
btw, Andy, I'm so glad you still stop in here, at least. don't disappear on us altogether. we would miss you too much!
Andy, I supported your recommendation on your thread. It would be another great tool.
For me, however, DG is as much about the relationships as the information. I would hate for you, Sarah, your pictures and your store of gardening information to go.
Dave
I supported it, I don't recall the last version of it. DG is so busy I just wonder how long the active list would be. I stopped over to a couple others sites I check on and saw forums that haven't had activity in days or weeks.
Thank You all for your support. We got Terry's attention. Her 'counter- proposal' is not quite what I'm looking for but it's a step in the right direction. Let's keep the pressure on, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, right?
Maybe after a year here, the 'newness' has worn off, my interests may be changing, too. DG is so big and unwieldy now with everything in it's own little 'compartment', something is needed to mix it up again.
Don't worry, I have another 49 weeks on my subscription, lol. I'm still around.
Back to Daily Musings.
I finally got my lawn mower back from the repair shop. It runs better than new. I got both the front and back yard done yesterday, in record time.
Sidekick Sarah is almost skunk odor free. She spent some time out in the rain Friday and likes to run her face on the lawn. Kinda like a natural face wash.
All my Dahlias are in the basement now. The last were some seedlings where the new Argiope spider made it's home. I shooed her out, good luck kid.
I planted 35 or so pink Daffodils and 8 short, mixed peacock Tulips in the new flower bed I set up last Spring. Flower beds, even perennial beds are never really 'done'.

Andy, I think that's one of the good things about gardening, is that it's never a fait accomplit. We've had some discussion about media in the artisan's forum about acrylics being more forgiving than watercolors because you can paint over if you don't like something. well, gardening is like acrylics. too tall, too peachy, too prone to mildew? move it, give it away, toss it out!
if it ever stops raining, I've got bulbs to plant.
Gram, the soil was a little wet yesterday as I planted the Tulips. They'll be all right.

Andy, don't go... even I will miss you... quick question for you, do you know any place in Brockton where I can get ceramic flue liners? I tryed all I could around Framingham and nothing... I am going to visit one of my new clients in Brockton this coming Tuesday and I would like to get some... I have a meeting in Braintree before that so if you know anything between Braintree and Brockton it would be great! Thanks!
poor Sarah... I would be devastated if I could not sleep with Lilly... but if she ever smelled like a skunk I probably would not be able to sleep for a week!!!! I know I am pathetic about how much I love this dog!
post a picture of sarah...
This is a picture of Lilly .... as I took her picture she stuck her tongue out... so much love I get....

Andy, it's more than a little wet here. I think if I stood still in the yard, I'd disappear like in quicksand ;-) everything's saturated. and it never stopped for a minute today. I don't mind working in the rain occasionally, but not when it's this cold and windy. got to stop sooner or later.
Gram we have not had as much rain as you.
Andy - my dog always licks his nose after everytime he smells something, I always wondered if it cleaned their smell palettte.
Al, the nose licking is better than what she used to do.
I got her at a little over a year old. She would sneeze after smelling my face. Remember the scene in Jurassic Park where the scientist is in the trees with the 2 kids and a Brontosaurus sniffs them and sneezes? Like that.....
Licking is better, lol.
Andy P
Thanks for the picture of Sarah...she is cute... I love dogs anyway... and turtles...
I am never going to find those flue liners.... Gram, I think I am going to try those cement blocks with a hole in the middle... it will not look as good as the flue liners but it may be my easy alternative... another thing I was thinking is just get either plastic containers and cut the botton off and give it a try...
hey, you guys what is the best way to protect sedum??? I have 3 beautiful plants... they are so green and look so healthy... am I right to think that they like cold weather???
Hey, Everybody! Have you noticed what's at the bottom of your Home Page?
RECENT POSTS, Thanks for all of your help on this, I'm sure it will help expand our enjoyment of DG.
Kassia, are you talking about the 'Terracotta' type flue liners? Like chimney liners? Most cement / brick retailers should have them.
For Sedum I just cover the stumps with a thick layer of leaves after a hard freeze. All the above ground vegetation dies back after a freeze. What you can do is take some cuttings and stick them in a sheltered, damp spot for the Winter. They root easily and may give you new plants next Spring. I planted 5 cuttings in the compost pile. I'm not touching that 'old' pile until Spring. That was almost 3 weeks ago, they looked fine when I checked them yesterday.
Andy,
So glad you had success with "recent postings." Please don't go.....Your photos are the best. And I love "Musings."
that's cool, Andy. and a pretty quick response, too. Dave (real Dave) must have thought it was reasonable. I think I'm going to like it, too.
gram
Nice work, Andy. It looks like your idea is a definite winner! It's a nice improvement. That Dave is quite a guy. And so are you.
Andy, that's what I mean... but I have called 3 places and they don't have the terracota flues... they have metal... but I am going to try to see if I can find larger blocks... I want to use then instead of wood... I have some ideas...
here are my sedum ( I have 2 about this size) and 2 cuttings that I have in a pot... it's almost under the pine tree... I have to clean up next weekend!
Gram, I'm not fake!! Nancy, thanks for the compliment....oh, you meant the other one too.
Kassia, Maybe I missed something. What are you planing to do with the flue liners?
Andy P
well, I am going to use the flue liners as pots line them up around a veggie bed... to plant some herbs like mint so it contains it a little bit... this is where I got the idea - http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/605540/
from this other DG member... if I can't use this I am going to try the cement blocks... maybe it will not look as good as I want but I can improvise...
Andy - I sent "Dave" an email thank you for the changes: positive reinforcement.
Kassia, I love that idea. I'd love to incorporate that into my yard in the spring!
Dave (not Dave), how do I know you're not fake? Al could be doing fake posts as you. Notice we've never seen a picture? and your chocolate eupatorium looks just like Al's. do you look anything like Al? I've never even been to this place you call Connecticut.
If I let out my real identity you would be overcome by my celebrity.Besides, my chocolate eupotorium was much floppier than Al's.
Al, Do you pinch them back?
Dave(not evil twin) - I pinch everybody. No my chocolate does well on it's own.
Gram - rule 1 of skepticism states 'that if you have never seen it - it doesn't exist'.
Al, I don't blame you for pinching them back if they pinched you first.
I need to add that to the rules I have posted in my office...attributed to Murphy.
'If you eat a frog first thing in the morning nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.'
hmmm..I'm starting with a new client in China Town today. Anyone want me to pick them up frog legs?
