Once again the old thread has grown to over 240 posts. Who would have thought......
This is a continuation of 'Daily Musings Page 2', http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/647163/
Al has IDed the mystery seeds as Yucca, I don't know if I would have ever guessed that.
Frost has invaded the northern reaches of the North East but most of us still have a little longer before we have to shop for fresh veggies.
Insects are looking for Winter shelter.
The furnace might kick in at night.
The sky is at it's bluest.
This may be the last Dragonfly shot of the season for me, a big Shadow Darner.
So lets get on with posting our thoughts about nature.

Daily Musings Page 3
Wow Andy. that's a beaut! I guess we all had thoughts about the little things. It just took you to coax them out of us. thanks
You know, Andy, I have a confession to make. Mostly, insects, bugs, whatever, have never seemed very REAL to me - just things that I swatted out of the way when they landed on me. Bees, for whatever reason, have never stung me - so I'm not afraid of them and don't kill, just flip off if they land on my body. But with all these close-up pictures, they're starting to feel like real, honest-to-God creatures that I don't have a right to just go knocking around. Now they have a face, and that bothers me. Can't decide if that's good or bad or just is.
Kay
Today we had frost on the pumpkin this morning but turned out to be 70 degree's by the end of the day.
Seeing how it was such a beautiful day we took a trip to a farm that has a corn maze and a pick your own pumpkin field. Grandaughters had a ball! Nothing makes a kid smile more than being in a huge field of pumpkins in Oct.
Here's Hunter w/her smile shinning!
BTW....You take a hay ride out to the corn maze & pumpkin field on a big cart drawn by work horses.

Oh, Pixie, they're adorable! aren't granddaughters the best thing ever invented? what a great way to spend a beautiful fall afternoon.
Andy - That is a nice pic - I really like the wings on it.
Pixie~a~Grandma - looks like fun, how many did they pick out as favorites?
Al ~ besides the illegal corn, (2) 27 lbs. pumpkins. My oldest Grandaughter thought it was a bit on the "small" size. I have been planting pumpkins for her since she was born, except this year. This is her first bought pumpkin. Most of the ones I gave her were 65 -80 lbs. The largest I've ever grown was one that weighed as much as me.(120lb) We had a heck of a time carving it!
Yankeecat, what a great picture!
Pixie, Beautiful grandchildren!
Gram & Al: How do you make those cute little squigly lines as in: gram-a-girl?
Thanks Gram & Dave, I think they are pretty adorable too! Next weekend it's off to the apple farm for a day of pickin!
Pixie~a~ fairy.
Those lines Dave? Top of the key board, should be the first key before the #1 key at the top of the board.
your results may vary- my ~ is above`, I think it's for spanish?
Pix - my kids like to break off the stems on ALL the pumpkins it seems

Thanks~A~Lot!
beautiful grand kids Pixie. Yankee, is that a permanent exhibit? I am guessing it is in the Conservatory? I haven't been there since the orchid show in March. I always mean to get there several times during the year, but never seem to. I've wanted to see the Water Lilies for a while now. One year I was a member, but again, I never seem to get there. It's a good hour drive for me.
Kay, I never paid much attention to insects either, until I started photographing them up close. Seeing them in all their detail up close makes them more 'real', I guess.
Nancy, there is a similar tree next door to me. I was looking at it yesterday, the colors are coming on nicely and when set against the deep blue sky.....
Al, I don't know that bug.
Pixie, I'll bet the kids and you will remember that outing for a long time. Thanks for posting the pics.
Here is another of that dragonfly, it was very cooperative.
~Andy P~
some bugs are ok by me....dragon flies, lady bugs, big fat bumblerbees :-) but then you get into others like bigcityal posted and i am out of there. yuck yuck yuckers. slugs....gross me out!!!! anyways.......you guys can have them, me i choose to ignor most of them. :-)
the glasswork from the botanicals reminds me of the Belagio hotel in las vegas. there foyer has a huge piece of artwork like this extended from the ceiling with lots of bright colors and various shapes of flowers, like these. beautiful but hard to capture on film.
ah a monarch just flew by my window. now those are ok too. :-)
what a gorgeous day we are having here today. time to get back outside.
debi
The Chihuly exhibit is only there through October 28th. That particular picture is in the green house. I have more pictures from all over the gardens that I will post later on.
Dave, I do get royalties on the ~, so use them sparingly. I'll send you a bill ~smile~
ditto what debi_z said about bugz, can't get over some of them being too gross. but that dragonfly is outstanding, Andy. looks like he should be in the exhibit at the Botanical gardens.
Yank, nice pic. looking forward to visiting some more of the exhibit vicariously...thanks
gram ~a girl with a tilde (that's what the squiggly things are called)~
Andy ~ Another beautiful shot...he looks so complex up close.
Pixie what gorgeous grandkids! I have 2 girls myself. They are my favourite subjects to photograh LOL.
As for bug I am not a big fan....when I see close up of bugs I just think ewww and then feel itchy everywhere. Bugs I can't stand at all are ear wigs, spiders, and most definitely SLUGS yuck! Oh I also hate black flies and mosquitos - living here in the North they come at you with knives and forks LOL
Uh~oh Gram! When you see the "what's Growing" thread you will be sending me a hefty bill.
tell you what, Dave. a month's worth free to see if you like them

Hey Andy, I know you also love taking pictures of snakes - I haven't seen one from you in a while. I think that is because he's at my house. Yup - went to go check on my orchids that I just brought back in and guess who looked nice and cozy in one of them? It must be nice and warm in my light stand. At least my neighbor will know where to look for him/her, 'cause you know it won't be me that gets him.
Since this is the musing thread - I'll muse. Why are many of us so afraid of something that is not only smaller than us, but probably more frightened of us? It's a small garden snake and although I've gotten used to seeing them around, there's no way in h*** that I'll pick it up. If it's still there, I might try and take a pic of it.
let me get this straight in my head...this snake is in your HOUSE in your orchid? (excuse me, I'll just wait outside)
YUP. Enough to make my skin crawl. It's not the first time either. Ask the boys - they think it's pretty funny. Right guys??
Yea, it's pretty funny. Get a stick and a plastic shopping bag. That will make moving it easy for you. LOL
I saw a small snake last week sunning on an evergreen. My first in months. Remember the "Blue Eyed" snake pics from Spring? Seems like so long ago.
I dug up my Asiatic lilies today, the 'Lollipops'. I planted one 5 years ago and pulled out a small bucket full of them today. Now they are in 3 places and I still have a few left. Cool.
I have a new flower bed by the street that will get some pink Daffodils and Tulips when I lift the Dahlias in a week or so. I hate to dig them up now, they are still blooming.
Digging up my tender bulbs is like admitting that Summer is really over. I wait until the last minute or after a light frost, which ever comes last, lol.
I got a new bug pic. A Striped Garden Caterpillar (Moth). Eating my Marigolds. BOOOOOOh.
Andy P
Well - my hands are still shaking, but my neighbor and I got it out. I was going to kill it with the shovel, but between the two of us, we got it in a box. Pretty pathetic if you ask me - especially when I threw the box...... At least I'm getting a bit braver. I don't jump on the drier to get out of it's way. My hands are still shaking though.
You know Andy, before I enlarged your pic, I thought it was a snake! I was all set to send you Einstein!
Anita, I said it was a bug.
Don't you trust me??? LOL
Andy P
On Anita's muse: what is it? Do we hate snakes because they squirm almost unnaturally, because they can sneak up on us, or because they are associated with evil (Or are they associated with evil because they naturally gross us out).
Big hairy spiders have the same effect on a lot of people.
Hey, gram. How about erasing some of Dave's free ~~~~s. It makes the page too wide.
LOL, Andy
Dave, I don't have an answer to your question. Although, it probably varies from person to person.
LOL LOL LOL "this snake is in your HOUSE in your orchid? (excuse me, I'll just wait outside)" that's me through and through. if a bug comes in my house it is dead, never mind a snake. now if it is outside, well that is there home and i'm coming into it. except for the most disgusting slugs. i see one of those and my clippers have clipped it in half pronto exchango. then the disgusting family members will come and eat it. grossssssss.!!!
as to your muse..........i have 3 brothers i can definitely put some blame onto here. :-) my younger brother used to like to freak me and my mother out by putting a half of a worm in his mouth. he'd pull it in and out then make like he was biting it and then pull it all the way out. most major and disgusting gross. of course he perfected this over time, as gross and disgusting brothers will do. :-)
neither did it help when 10 years old we bought a new house. there was a fireplace in my bedroom, with the living room's directly below it. well the first fire downstairs caused the bugs, a snake and god only knows what else to come out of the fireplace in my room where there was no fire. can you say nightmares and gross me out and thank god dad built a fire in it that night. :-) got the rest of those buggers for me. :-)
later.................debi & franklin
Debi ~ Had the same problem only 6 older brothers. They first taught me to pick up snakes, showed me how to catch them without getting bit. Then they told me to go show Mom how I caught a snake. I was 5, picked up the snake and oh so proud of myself walked up the steps onto the porch yelling for Mom to come see what i caught! When she got to the screen door, there I was holding a 3-4ft garter snake I had caught in the garden. She screamed, and slamed the door in my face. Talk about rejection!!! I stood there on the porch w/tears streaming down my face holding a confused and scared snake While my brothers in the mean time had gone behind the rose bushes to watch, and were rolling around laughing hysterically!
It's funny, but now I don't like them and run the other way when I see them, Mom must of put the fear in me when she screamed!
