I had a thought. I've been cutting down some old dried up rose canes, and I haven't gotten around to tossing them in the trash yet. If I put them down among my irises and then put mulch on top of them, would that discourage the vermin? Kind of like caltrops. I've stepped on long, wicked thorns. They go right through my shoe. Not pleasant.

If, by vermin, you are referring to the squirrels, they would probably just move the rose canes out of the way.
You could try a patch to see. I'd go with chicken wire or similar under the mulch.
Sorry, but I've seen squirrels romping around among thorny bushes; don't think it will help, and you could get gored next spring since you won't know where the canes are under the mulch.
Dang. Back to the drawing board.
